Looks like Treyarch has taken a cue from Valve's upcoming Left 4 Dead and the world's love of zombie action. Developer Treyarch has revealed that Call of Duty: World at War will include a Nazi Zombie Mode, in the latest edition of GameTrailers TV. Once the single player campaign has been completed players will gain access to the mode which sends waves of Nazi Zombie adversaries in the players direction.
The mode sports an economy system which allows players to purchase new weapons and rebuild barricades to slow down the zombie rush. How crazy does it get? According to Treyarch the team got to the 23rd wave before becoming overwhelmed by the zombie horde. Now that is a cool little extra.

How do you figure? Gears Horde mode was announced like a month ago. Seems like a coincidence to me. There's no way you could put something like this together that fast.

There is a video proving it, unless the developers made the actual game mode as a joke and are not going to include it in the game, however it is a real game mode.

saw this on Spike TV. the Developers were talking about this. 4 player co-op and the waves of zombies are endless. The development team said they can last 23 waves...
They said this is a pure team effort, where you need to barracade doors and windows and stuff. it's pretty impressive.
this makes me want to pick this game up now.

WTFF? Zombie mode? That's retarded. Why does this game have to piss on COD4 so much?
Posted: Oct 26th 2008 1:58AM Anticrawl said
COD4 pissed on its self by adding on the "Modern Warfare" bit at the end. Tell me what is so modern about it? Has the insane poorly trained soldier feel of WWII where they handed a rifle and a helmet to anyone who could walk. It was COD2 with sprinting, a few gimmicks and less geometry on the character models to make them appear more detailed. How modern is running into the open tossing grenades in the air like an idiot? Should have stuck with WWII even though I'm sick of that topic, the game play felt more suited to that era of war. Today we can't afford collateral damage and giving away your position or wasting grenades. The only game mode worth playing that doesn't piss me off is Search & Destroy. Can't believe I wasted 60 dollars on the game for a short (but very fun) single player game.

I dunno about you guys, but I totally got a "Modern Warfare" vibe from Call of Duty 4. And I loved it. It had pretty much everything I expected from a "Modern Warfare" shooter. I thought the weapons felt "Modern", the time era felt "Modern", the ability to call in air support came off as "Modern".
I seriously think they should have called it CoD4: Modern Warfare...oh, wait...

eh. i sure am hoping that zombies do not become to games, like the world war 2 genre has become. meaning, played out.

Why all the hate? What is the basis? It's not like the zombies are in the campaign... it's a mini-game that is unlocked after beating the game. The zombies don't rise during the battles in the Pacific or Eastern fronts.
I personally think it's a wonderful idea. I was trying to figure out which of the two games (CoD:WaW or L4D ) I was going to buy first. With CoD:WaW you get both games in one. You get the 2 most evil enemies to fight in any game rolled into one game!
Also stop the Treyarch hate. I think many people will be suprised by this game. Treyarch is not a bad developer, they only had 8 months to make CoD 3 and I think they did a wonderful job. I still play 3 online to this day. CoD:WaW has had more that twice the amount of dev. time.

There is going to be a ton of flaming/hate this holiday season as most people can't afford to buy all the new games, so people are quick to latch onto the one they chose and bash the games they had to sacrifice buying - so is the way with the console war as well (the kids who can't afford both, flame the one they don't have)
This looks awesome though, nice little bonus feature. Nothing will beat Left 4 Dead versus mode though.

So let's see here: Waw is officially borrowing from:
Cod4 (multiplayer) - I could say cod series in general but I mean come on, it IS a cod game... but the multiplayer is much, much too similar to cod4
Wolfenstein/l4d - zombies
Halo - deathcards instead of skulls
Gears of war 2 - horde mode
far cry 2 - fire
did I miss any? the odd thing is that these are really just coincidences since the game was in development before any of these features from rival games were announced or released.

"Left 4 Dead does not have zombies, they have people who are infected with a disease. They are the "Infected" and share no traits with zombies other than being really ugly and consuming human flesh.... kinda sounds like a hooker really."
They share no traits with zombies? They have rotting flesh. They used to be humans, but have changed. Their arrival resulted in the collapse of society. Them attacking another person, results in that person becoming a zomb..I mean(for the purposes of this arguement alone) infected.
The truth is, every single trait that you attribute to zombies, that isn't in the infected - zombie variants of Dawn of the dead, 28 days later, left 4 dead, etc. Most of those traits weren't ones zombies had to begin with. Those were traits that certain works of fiction added to zombies, that were carried on.
The concept of the zombies evolved from superstitions of the undead. Earlier zombie movies, kept that superstition aspect. George A. Romero for example, has a bible alluded answer to the zombies. Other zombie movies had demonic, or sorcery explanations.
Modern zombie deplictions, have abandoned that. Because audiences don't respond to that very well any more. So how do they create a valid explanation for zombies? The only reasonable explanation was an infection.
As for the increased speed of zombies, that was an effort to appeal to a audience that wants more tension and a faster pace from movies.
If you actually remember. Zombies used to eat brains. They didn't originally eat flesh at all. They killed a victim, and ate their brains because they had none. And yet one of the only traits you see infected and zombies as sharing is that they eat flesh. Theres lots of ways the concept of the zombie has evolved inorder to survive.
The problem is, the zombie genre died. And by the time it was revived the audience had changed so much. That the genre had to change so much at once, that some fans of the original genre reject it. But had the genre evolved as it should have, and had it never ended up dieing for as long as it did . Well then we wouldn't even be having this arguement.

Your argment was interesting until I read:
"If you actually remember. Zombies used to eat brains. They didn't originally eat flesh at all. They killed a victim, and ate their brains because they had none."
That's not true. Zombies didn't eat brains until Return of the Living Dead, which was more of a spoof movie. The classic Romero zombies never went for the brains, just the flesh.

"the odd thing is that these are really just coincidences since the game was in development before any of these features from rival games were announced or released."
Skulls were in Halo 2.
Horde mode is a survival mode. Another game that has it, is the XBLM port of Marathon: Durandal. That came out in August 2007. Well before that, a thread with thousands of comments on B.NET had people asking for a survival mode in Halo 3. EPIC cites Geometry wars and smash T.V as inspiration for Horde.
Then theres the COD 4 multiplayer. Of cource Treyarch saw that well before we did. I mean their game uses the same engine.
As for wolfestein/ Left 4 Dead. Wolfestein has been out for a long while. Left 4 Dead has been announced for a long while.
You also have to realize something, just because the game started development before another game announces features. That doesn't mean you can't add that feature to your game, half way through development.
The only coincidence there is the fire. Which lets be honest, is hardly a revolutionary idea. The mechanics behind the propagation is new, but the idea itself isn't.

I feel bad about the Zombies.
I mean, CoD is a "realistic" franchise, oriented at the real war. Why this twist to undead? You're not Resident Evil, it's not Gears of War.
Also I really think it's kind of de-humanizing Germans. You know, we're normal people, even if very bad things happened, which should not be forgotten.
These wars and war crimes have been done by human beings. Myth creation shouldn't be involved in history ... uninformed youth might think it's all just a funny story and Germans really aren't normal people ... and that the crimes were only possible with "unearthly" beings involved.
Why no german campaing mode anyway?
