If you spend $300 on something that costs $125 then you deserve your stupid tax. Minor software enhancements, two inferior cameras, and a shittier lifespan does not equal +$175.

@TFoK

No joke, PSP fans upgraded to a smaller PSP with a screen that has awful tearing and in some cases the display doesn't even work. Atleast Nintendo's products always work.

The BEST thing about the DSi is that it ditched the awful enamel finish for a more matte finish, much better for a portable device that has your hands all over it and should be able to slide into your pocket without a case to keep it from getting scratched.

Going to have to agree with Bowser on this one. It may be a nice perk for new buyers, but paying a premium to have one now is a little nuts.

However he does have a point.

300$ is one heck of a big mark up.

I'll wait till it comes to the US and maybe with a few more Special DSi Games.

With luck by the time it gets to our shore it will also be homebrewable too...

I use my Current DS for Movies and Music, as well as PDFs and Comicbooks/Manga, and when it I get my headset for it, a VoIP Phone. Its more of portable Media Center then just a game console for me now. I hope I'll be able to do the same or better things with the DSi

I wasn't going to buy a DSi in the first place, anyways. I don't think importing a region-locked system from Japan is going to help either. Especially with it's crazy tax.

To tell you the truth, the region lock on the system just makes everything worse in the long run, because you have to pay up the ass for games in a different language.

I really hope that DS flash carts still work on the DSi. If not, I hope someone develops a flash cart for the DSi.

@scissors125

I really agree with you on the region lock situation. I really can't understand why anyone in their right mind would want to import a system that can't play games in a understandable language.

Although the lost of gba playability is a little discouraging, I believe I'll still be getting a US DSi. Its about time for a upgrade anyway, my DS phat's touchscreen has been acting all screwy. The extra screen space should be great for homebrew like colors ds.

well you can assume that slot 2 cards are not going to work as theres no more slot 2.
But i imagine a slot 1 card will still work , seeing as they so far theres been no real mention of any hardware upgrades , aka meaning putting some fixes on stopping the flashcards, althought it would be safe to assume they have tried to patch up a few things.
I doubt i'll get a DSi , recently sold my ds lite since it was forming some cracks on the hinge that would make it difficult to play. Got a PSP now , which seems far more nicer , actually like it a lot better. Still gonna get a DS again eventually, but right now i'd stick with a lite , as i know its a great little handheld , which the DSi has alot of proving to do.

No way!!! $300 for a gadget w/ no graphical enhancement and GBA slot-less hanheld (Talk about a backward move by Nintend)?! I'd better have my DSlite, MP3, Digicam and portable DVD w/ me than to spend this expensive gadget!!

Nintendo must think twice about the price of the DSi because there is no graphical enhancement in DSi from DSLite.. Just a bigger screen, camera, Video/Music playback and nothing more?!

graphical enhancement isn't easy when you have to:
1) maintain asect ratio and pixel dimensions for backward compatibility. The best they could do is offer bigger and better screens (larger pixels) like they apparently have. Unless you like playing with black borders a la Game Boy Advance on the DS (I dislike playing GBA on DS with a passion), and even if you got graphical enhancement you'd be left with games that only work with one or the other device. I don't think this will go down well, at least not now. Compatibility is important.

2) speaking of which, it's probably time they removed that GBA slot, as they have. Like some have said, anyone who really wants GBA has a GBA device, I would think. There is probably a minority who would miss it, and that's too bad. It's not like you could even play multiplayer with GBA on the DS anyway, so... I tend to think it's about time they tossed it, but it is a bit of a shame, too.

People still have plenty of time to buy a Lite or original DS (second-hand), and it means a Lite isn't 'totally useless' given this new hardware.

3) Carrying your DS Lite, MP3 player, digicam and portable DVD sounds like a chore, and I doubt the DSi is aiming to compete squarely with all these devices, but Nintendo have made it a more social, fun and useful device; in fact the upgrade is quite substantial, if you ask me. Nobody is forcing you to buy it. Nintendo make an offering, you decide if it's worth it.

4) they have made many fun enhancements to the device and some much needed storage, and more internet capabilities. I think they have done well under the circumstances. I just hope the battery is user-replaceable like the current Lite.

For this price I think it's low-value, but not to worry; you don't have to import in about 6 months. I fail to see the views of people calling this a minor update when so many Game Boy And Game Boy Advance and DS updates before this offered far less (and also omitted backwards compatibility).

Great going Nintendo, I say.

tekdroid you have a valed point i really think that they have a pretty big upgrade considering what the ds started out with( touch screen and a mic ) and even before that was the game boy sp and that was in only 2005 that it cam out and it only had a light up screen that's a three year upgrade right now the ds is being used for everything but gaming.

so the fact that nintendo is even putting out a piece of hardware like this is amazing i mean com on we cnat forget the people that dont have a homebrew card or the one's that have NEVER ever heard of home brew.

and other than gutair hero who really use's the gba slot now.

after the dsi comes out if want to play a gamebot game then i will just pull out my old gameboy advance

Ha.

I'd rather take that 300 and spend it on vintage games for my SNES (CT, Yoshi's Island, Mario RPG).

Hrm... and the GBA slot is worth much more then those crappy add-ons, which might I add, that my cell phone does a better job of.

Exactly. People who can't bother to wait a little longer for what I feel isn't even a worthy upgrade are just extremely unwise. You've got all kinds of financial crisis all around you and you're willing to dish out 175 or so extra bucks for no better reason than to show off your DS camera a few months sooner than the rest of the country.

I'm not even getting one when it DOES come to the States because I don't have a need for any of the add-ons. It's cute, but very unnecessary.

You all want one and can't afford it. Relax, it's just a game. For me, it's worth paying extra to get it a year early. The DSi will not launch in the U.S. until fall of 2009. It's worth it for the access to the Japanese Nintendo store alone, the selection there is amazing. The Game Boy Camera was also pretty damn fun, I would love an update to that. Maybe it will be like a portable Mario Paint?

I think the enhancements aren't that bad really. The idea of downloads onto SD card to play virtual console and DSi-ware on the go makes me want the DSi. And I like the idea of listening to music and occasionally taking a picture or using it to view pictures. However, paying $300 for it is ridiculous. I'll just have to be patient until it releases in the US.

Oh come on, you've been whining over and over about the friggin' gba slot. backwards compatibility helps when a system has a weak selection of games, but the ds is a big boy now, it can stand on it's own merit. and besides, the back compatibility wasn't that great to begin with.(no multiplayer, gbc/original game boy games didn't work, e-reader only worked with the lite)

I also have to believe anyone who loves the game boy advance that much has at least one other device that can play them.(there's even a portable dvd player with a gba slot for god's sake)

as for the slot 2 accessories, there's really nothing so good that you should be upset about losing them.(again, anyone who cares probably already has a phat/lite that can make use of them anyway)

Hey.
I'm importing it.
Moreover, I'm importing one for my fiancée as well.
Why? Because we enjoy Nintendo products, and understand that not every awesome game is going to come to the US. I also understand that Nintendo of America has basically stood up and said "Despite the overwhelming success of the Apple App Store, we think it's a crock of shit." I don't want to waste time waiting for this to come to the US, and then bemoan my fate when I can't play something or do something. I would rather drop the extra cash now, enjoy my toy for about a half year or more before anyone else, and know that, despite everything, I'm going to have fun. That's what Nintendo's best at. Having fun.
I won't protest the constant re-posting of these type of articles, but if we can keep the unnecessary flame wars out of the threads, that'd be super.

The DSi makes me think back to the 16-bit era when an incredible company called Sega dethrowned the giant Nintendo and then squandered it away with expensive marginally improved hardware that only served to split the userbase (and dev base) and thoroughly confuse customers.

(That's not to say I didn't love the Sega CD; though the library of games is small, there are some unbelievable games -- HOTA, Lunar 1 & 2, etc.)

It's simple: Don't be one of those idiots who imports this on day-one. Wait a couple of weeks to see what the Japanese post on YouTube about the functionality, or their reviews on it on the Japanese Amazon site.

Considering the lukewarm response of the DSi here, I doubt Japanese gamers are so different in their opinions of the system. I wouldn't be surprised if the demand drops dramatically after two weeks (at least enough to drop the import price)

There's only one reason why I'd get a DSi imported, and that's for a single game: PS0. If I am able to get that and start playing a year before or earlier, I don't mind paying the ridiculous prices that might come (+ I might be in Japan by that time anyways)

I hate to say it, people, but Nintendo is probably going to pull some BS with compatibility in the near future. I'm fearful that PS0 might be DSi only, and with the amount of hyped games to look forward to in the near-future, I wonder if they'd do something idiotic to force people to buy the DSi. Here's hoping that if they do, they'll just force people to buy a memory x-pack for the older systems and not cut it off completely.

I'm pretty sure sega has the say in whether or not to make pso a dsi only game, unless I missed the part where nintendo is developing it. and even then it'd only be dsi exclusive if they decide that downloadable content is integral to the phantasy star zero experience.

Nay.
