New Xbox Experience's Video Marketplace and Netflix previewed
We're big fans of the Xbox Live Video Marketplace, largely due to our own barren DVD collection and our nationwide banning from Blockbuster Video following our refusal to pay a $230 late fee on Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. That's why this week's New Xbox Experience sneak preview on Gamerscore Blog caught our eye -- it focuses on the revamped Video Marketplace and the soon-to-be-added Netflix functionality.
No groundbreaking new information is revealed in the blog post, though some interesting statistics are given -- upon the launch of the NXE, Netflix Unlimited subscribers with Xbox Live Gold accounts will be able to instantly stream over 12,000 movies to their consoles. Combined with more than 20,000 pieces of content on the XBVM, the NXE is shaping up to be a cinematic treasure trove -- best of all, there's no late fees, meaning we can finally enjoy all that trouser-centric teen drama on our own terms.

It's the weekend, he's the only one not in search of Blueberry Muffin Tops or watching Police Squad 2: The Squaddening.
Jakka @ Oct 26th 2008 6:40AM
I'm sorry, but if the crew did get off their ass and did as little as copy-paste directly of their sister sites(BigDownload,PS3 Fanboy,Wii Fanboy,DS Fanboy,PSP Fanboy,360 Fanboy) they should have enough news to fill up the page.
Maybe not as much as on Mon-Fri but still better than the 1-shitty-news-ever-six-hours.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 25th 2008 9:18PM
I may have to subscribe to Netflix because of this.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Oct 25th 2008 11:35PM
Be careful, check the library first. The list of movies available for streaming on Netflix is very poor.
PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Oct 26th 2008 1:33AM
Let me just say that as cool as this idea is it still falls short to what the PS3 can do and here is why. With the newest Flash player support you can simply go to streaming sites like surfthechannel.com and stream every single movie new, old and in theater's for free. Not to mention every TV show on TV and all the UFC PPV events the day after.
It's a great step forward for 360-only owners and will provide more content than the XBLM Video store and the PSN video store. It will just take some time to get some of the better movies on there. With the Internet at your fingertips and actual full featured flash support on the PS3 it just provides a cheaper/free alternative. I still hope that MS will release a real version of Internet explorer on the 360 and we will finally have an actual fully featured and supported internet browser.
dxr @ Oct 26th 2008 1:57AM
@johnnynumber5
All true except you fail to mention that the only way to watch them is by zooming in on your screen. Resulting in an awful pixelated video.
Full screen options do not work for most players.
Netflix streaming will offer full screen versions at way higher quality.
JoeTheBlow @ Oct 26th 2008 5:18AM
Way higher cost too.
Don't forget people, everything Microsoft does is a play to extract more money from your wallets.
MonkeyHood @ Oct 26th 2008 6:58AM
Everything Sony (and every other corporation) does it to extract money from your wallet. MS is not different.
eNrique @ Oct 26th 2008 12:08PM
Hey dxr, i know that 360 fanboys upvoted you, but you FORGOT to mention that Netflix only streams movies in standard def, so according to your logic it means "the only way to watch them is by zooming in on your screen. Resulting in an awful pixelated video"
I'm guessing that, before you troll buy a PlayStation 3, and then, do some research.
:D
btw, streaming videos over Flash 9, as number 9 mentions, are in Standard def too, you fail.
Vidikron @ Oct 26th 2008 5:46PM
List of streaming movie is actually a lot better now that they teamed up with Starz.
whookid @ Oct 25th 2008 9:24PM
Is their gonna be anything to replace the netflix feature outside of America, Or is it just not gonna be part of the update anywhere else? Anyone seen anything about this anywhere?
Premature ejaculation man @ Oct 25th 2008 10:00PM
Judging by all other features of xbox LIVE, what happens in America, stays there for at least a year. I don't even have access to a video marketplace yet or inside xbox.
So I doubt it.
JoeTheBlow @ Oct 26th 2008 5:20AM
I think we in Europe were supposed to have streaming TV by this time LAST YEAR.
Still no sign, doubt there will be this generation, Microsoft are such hot air blowers.
deaftly @ Oct 26th 2008 6:44PM
haha you live in europe haha
BIGFAT @ Oct 25th 2008 9:40PM
what type of movies are on the service?
any t.v shows season on there.
i plan on joining netflicks as soon as this comes out.
aaron @ Oct 25th 2008 10:01PM
http://www.netflix.com/WiHome?lnkctr=mhWN&lnkce=mhwi not sure if that link will work w/o logging in but if it does you can view all the movies/tv shows there.
but generally they have everything pretty well covered other than the newest movies.
also remember this service is only going to grow over time as well as go hd (or alteast higher quality) and get 5.1 sound (i really see this being the most important feature of netflix going forward).... to me its as big of a revolution in movie watching as netflix was with their original dvd by mail service was.
BIGFAT @ Oct 25th 2008 10:12PM
thanks i herd there was nothing but old movies on the service so i just wanted to make sure.
aaron @ Oct 25th 2008 10:13PM
there wasnt until a few weeks ago when the starz stuff came online.... their movie selection was pretty horrible but now that the starz stuff is on its pretty damn good now.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Oct 25th 2008 11:38PM
Which of those convinced you that Netflix has newish movies for streaming now? Was it Unbreakable or Lost Boys?
It's not Netflix' fault, but the big companies just aren't making much besides library titles available for streaming on any service.
Dadidito @ Oct 25th 2008 9:47PM
If you like tv shows. netflix rocks for that. I caught up basically on the "office" during lunch because of the streaming video. Really great for episodic shows.
BIGFAT @ Oct 26th 2008 2:09PM
Does it have lost?
always wanted to get into that series, but its one of those "if i miss the first episode, I'll be lost forever" type shows.
Arttemis @ Oct 25th 2008 9:47PM
From article,
"On Nov. 19, all movies from your Netflix instant watch queue will be instantly accessible and playable on your Xbox 360."
I thought it was announced that it wouldn't be part of the new dashboard update - even according to the first "related story" on the list below the post.
aaron @ Oct 25th 2008 10:03PM
they never said netflix would not be part of the update.... people misunderstood/misreported but it was the movie sharing/party stuff within netflix that will not make the launch.
the part where you could invite your friends to your movie and watch it together over live.
Premature ejaculation man @ Oct 25th 2008 10:03PM
Tell me where it says that watching a movie on your netflix instant list has to be shared with friends (since the ****sharing**** feature isn't enabled upon release) and cannot be watched alone...
RagnarokAngel @ Oct 25th 2008 10:05PM
naw only the "share" feature that lets you watch a film simultaneously with friends on other xboxs.
Also you need gold? that's bullshit :/
Arttemis @ Oct 25th 2008 10:09PM
Ah, thanks for the clarification.
I thought the entire Netflix integration was axed, but this news is excellent!
Looks like I'll be associating my parent's account to my gamertag for infinite streaming videos!
Premature ejaculation man @ Oct 25th 2008 10:10PM
Yeah requiring gold is a little odd I thought. But I suppose it puts more of a premium other than content a few days earlier and online play.
But I could understand why people wouldn't want to bother.
markhill66 @ Oct 25th 2008 10:03PM
I'm really excited about this. I have a Gold account and Netflix, so I'll definitely be using this often. It
It finally feels like we are getting hooked up, instead of getting screwed.

To the Joystiq editors:
Please stop assuming that your site is read exclusively by American residents. I am tired of reading about all the latest netflix news and cool features about downloadable movies and tv shows in general, only to remind myself that netflix and most similar companies do not operate in Canada and don't even seem to want to. This INCLUDES downloading, of course. The only fully legal way to even just rent an extremely limited selection of movies? *Shudder* I-tunes. It's an extremely restrictive format and I don't think Steve Jobs is going to make a deal with either MS or Sony anytime soon.
For that matter how come you Americans get to keep the best television channels to yourselves? I can't even access the shotime web site from here. It's like these media companies WANT Canadians to enable P2P bit-torrents.
SKI @ Oct 25th 2008 10:46PM
Move to the USA. Problem solved.
riggs @ Oct 25th 2008 11:26PM
whats this all aboot eh?
theturtle363 @ Oct 26th 2008 1:03AM
so what, are they just not supposed to report on things?
WRE @ Oct 26th 2008 1:04AM
Dearest Eric,
Please stop assuming that anyone gives a shit about Canadians and your feelings towards digital media, or anything else for that matter. I am tired of reading post after post bemoaning the Amish-like lack of cool technological news that's actually applicable to our Northern brethren.
And we Americans keep all of this cool stuff to ourselves because we can. Canadians are too busy hugging trees (when they aren't covered by snow) and giving medical care to anyone with a stubbed toe to do anything about it. Canada's the place that people go to when they're too afraid to fight for a cause, remember? Honor your roots, boy.
Love,
America
Travis @ Oct 26th 2008 5:52AM
Dear WRE
Go pay for health care and be severely obese. Go elect another C student to run your country.
And please, dish out more cliche's pertaining to Canada...then try to find us on the map.
Greasy American attitudes like that are the reason why your country is nose diving into nothing.
at least when the USA becomes China Part Two I can finally get some decent food when I'm down there.
WRE @ Oct 26th 2008 6:08AM
Dear Travis,
I'm not going to assume that your reading comprehension is sub-par, as attested by your inability to understand a post that is clearly satirical, but you are either a complete moron or the greatest ironist of our time.
Please dish out more cliches about how Americans are severely obese and greasy and keep ripping off Chris Rock by referring to the American President as a "C student".
And hey, at least when China takes over the world we'll have the honor of being a full upgrade, a.k.a. China Part Two, instead of the incremental upgrade reserved for Second World countries. Think about it. Your national anthem will be "Oh China 3.456877897799". Try getting your mouth around that! Oh and speaking of getting your mouth around things, how's the Moose penis this time of year?
Love,
China: Part Deux

Nationalism is my favourite type of ism.
Nick8708 @ Oct 26th 2008 8:50AM
@Jakka
That may have something to do with the laws concerning contests. There's all kinds of crazy rules and restrictions, and in some cases I think even residents of certain states aren't eligible for some contests. Not sure if that's it, but it might not be Joystiq's fault.
Saria the Cat @ Oct 26th 2008 9:12AM
Um, Eric, Joystiq is U.S.-based. All the bloggers (with the exception of a South African pygmy hut-dweller) are Americans. So it's primarily American news with international news relevant to American and global audiences. It's like you're getting mad at the BBC for constantly posting British news. If you want to only hear about Canadian gaming news, then read a Canadian gaming site.
Bowser the Baptist @ Oct 26th 2008 9:26AM
That's not a very nice attitude, Saria.
Conform or leave: conform or leave.
Actually, with a moments more pondering, that's a rather horrid attitude. What's next? Chants of 'Il Duce?'
Saria the Cat @ Oct 26th 2008 10:01AM
@Bowser: Are you comparing me to a fascist because I'm telling a person complaining about not seeing enough Canadian-relevant news on an American news site to find a Canadian news site? Wow.
dark_inchworm @ Oct 26th 2008 11:45AM
Bowser the Baptist: Making Baptists look like douche bags since he re-rolled his account.
theturtle363 @ Oct 26th 2008 11:52AM
travis, the only "cliches" about canada WRE listed were the same things you complained about. BTW, there's a good chance President Bush is smarter than you, you're just too lazy to think past what dat der picter bawx tells ya
Draken Stark @ Oct 26th 2008 1:37PM
@Eric, Joystiq
How come everything you blog about is based on earth. I live way out here on the moon with my space dog and cat. Why can't I have Netflix and shit way out here? I want everything on the internets available out here since I'm still connected!
Eric @ Oct 26th 2008 7:15PM
Crike--I'm gone for one day and I've started my very first flame-war (slight exaggeration). I really only posted half in jest; I know joystiq shouldn't avoiding posting news that's American exclusive. Still, it would be nice if companies weren't so copyright sensitive or whatever the terminology. Actually I think the problem might be mostly on the Canadian side; CRTC laws stipulate that a certain amount of Canadian programming content must be "Canadian"--whatever the heck that means. That means even when we get American programs they're localised so we can't see those awesome SuperBowl commercials unless its on Youtube. And let's be honest here--no one watches the Super Bowl except for the commercials.
