Ah, your 60gb died as well? Its ridiculous for Sony to charge for its repair when its a build quality issue!

I hope that soon, Sony will fucking fess up and repair this issue for free and refund the poor souls that paid for the repair!

Its a bigger problem than Sony fanboys want to admit, this is the PS3's "RROD", its Blu-Ray drive failing. : (

Yeah it really blows. Mine is pretty much one day out of warranty and they want to charge me close to $180 to repair it? I called them on Thursday and told them to send it back to me un-repaired. It's not even the money that is the issue, its the slap in the face for adopting their console early.

The first time my 360 died, it was out of warranty for 5 months and it wasnt even due to the RROD. It was a read disc error because something was wrong with the drive on that one too, and MS waived the repair fee for that and just sent me a new one.

When the 2nd 360 Pro died cuz of RROD, they replaced it with an Elite for no charge.

Oh well, PS2 + 360 FTW! =D

I was a Playstation fanboy, my previous consoles were a PS1/PS2 and Sony tested my fanboyism with all their PR blunders with the PS3, losing exclusives one by one, having delayed releases, shoddy ports, etc.

But this build quality issue, them refusing to acknowledge it as such on their part and not repairing it for free has teared it. And even if their new models have better quality components, they are gimped compared to the original 60gb models.

Xbox 360 and PC FTW!!!

I know what you mean Chin.

One of the main reasons I bought the PS3 was to not have to purchase a stand-alone Bluray player. But clearly, that was too good to be true...

Besides, ur rite, the only decent versions of the PS3 were the 60 and 20GB ones. All the ones after are missing something or other.

LOL you know wat the irony of all this is? After praising MS in my last couple of posts, I just turned on my 360 to find that my Live Gold membership has expired. bahah

CURSES! Worlds are colliding!

And on top of all this, with RRoD and shoddy Ps3 hardware quality, the Wii manages to stay almost defect-free, and in 1st place. I'll be getting a 360 soon for sure, i need some Fable 2, Gears 2, DMC4, FFXIII and RE5, but the Wii is still going to be my console of choice.

The wii's only defect free because they've had 8 years to perfect the system. They'd have to have some of the dumbest engineers ever to have a design flaw with a system that weak.

@Chin-poh: Generally it's the 40GBs that eat their BR drive, and even then it's only guesstimated at 1%. Still, 1% of 15 million consoles is 150,000 right?

And everyone knows how loud the squeaky wheels are. When you drop $400+ on a console and it breaks 2 years later, there's hell to pay. I kinda wish Sony had gone with a longer warranty.

I think this is seven weeks in a row that the 360 has outsold the ps3. This week, the 360 sold %166 of the number of ps3.

I hear that 360's are still pretty scarce in Japanese stores right now too, I guess it's sad that PS3 is doing so bad in it's home county AND America.

If the ps2 makes profit for every console sold and the ps3 doesn't...Why would it matter to Sony if the ps2 (and obviously the psp) outsold it?

Golly, they still make their money. They do no pass it onto you (unless you are an investor and on joystiq...Which would be wierd) so why care?

That silly. Sony will OBVIOUSLY care that the console they sunk over 2 BILLION US Dollars into researching and making, is selling worse than a console about 6-7 years old. With less Ps3 consoles out there, there is less software being sold, which mean less royalties for Sony. Also means more devs will shy away from the platform fearing lower sales and lower profits, causing Sony to slowly lose 3rd party support and quickly lost 3rd party exclusive titles. Less money for Sony also means less money to sink into the Ps4, where as Nintendo for example have enough money to make a quantum gaming console with unlimited Wifi range, a 100TB Hdd and sell it for US$149 on launch next year (slight exaggeration).

Ask EA if they're shying away from the PS3. They have a new strategy that's PS3-centric since it accounted for much of their 2008 sales.

It's a good theory but with 15mil or so in the wild, it may not be true.

I STILL can't see what those two images are beside the Xbox's numbers. It can't just be me, I've seen other people commenting on it too. Here's a screen for anyone wondering what I'm talking about:

Mine does that sometimes. Bite the bullet and download Google Chrome. It's the best browser i've ever used, very fast, even properly saves e-mail/password information on this site, you can pull tabs down to new windows (and back), resize reply boxes (like i'm now typing into) and have an incognito window (no history or cookies saved, porn browser!).

The only problem is the beta has trouble with youtube vids and imbeded vids sometimes. Keep IE for that

So this entire article is making fun of the fact that even though Sony made some very minor and slight changes to the Sony PSP, people were dumb enough to buy into it. The result being that the overall sales of PSP units sold greatly.

So the joystiq staff decided to try the same tactic on their site starting with this article in hopes of getting more viewers.

Ha ha.

New cheaper 80GB SKU + LBP (+ LBP bundle) are releasing next week. Sales should shoot up.

No one is going to buy a console this week when they can get the exact same thing with an 80GB hardrive (instead of a 40GB one) next week, hence the dip in sales.

I am amazed at how many sales they can make by selling a, virtually, the same piece of hardware again. Both in the DS case, and the PSP case.

What is different on the psp 3000?

It has a shittier screen :)

The screen is supposedly brighter and has a faster refresh rate to play better in the sunlight. It also has a built in microphone and the Home button is now the PS button.

The photoshop image illustrates the Windows color palette is fucked up. MPEG and other experts defined "white" as 235 out of 255, allowing for "whiter than white", just like analog television. But Microsoft ignored this logic and used 255 as white, thereby not allowing "lens flare" to be brighter than "paper".

Here's the reason and blame 'Griffin' for it...

That's a snippet of the 'offending' line :

Notice after the 'Up_Arrow.jpg' which has a path to a real URL, the next two point to a file on Griffin's hard disk...

One comment and one question.

1. My Wii f*cked up after a year when the video card just went haywire and I got BB to replace it for free.
(I suggest you guys don't leave the WiiConnect24 on)

My xbox is almost a year old and its still running fine.

---

2. Is the 80gb and/or the new 160gb PS3 backwards compatible? I had some guy argue with me at work about the 80gb and I was pretty certain it wasn't.

Thanks.

Sorry, the new 80gb and 160gb models are functionally identical to the 40gb models, no PS2 B/C and no memory card readers. Their gone forever, rest in peace, sob sob sob.

That's why I bought the 80GB PS3 when the Metal Gear Solid version came out.

New version (last one with backwards compatibility) + $100 gift card at wal-mart with the purchase of a blu-ray player = me getting one that is just coming out at the same price point, but with B/C, and... 5 months ago.

Me FTW.

Can anyone clarify please.

Why not report on the canceled pre-orders of the Black PSP-3000 in NA. I'd like to know why and if we will still be able to get our hands on it in November. Yes, I know it is possible that they are addressing the screen complaints, but no official statement has been made. Some official news would be appreciated.
