Saints Row 3 already in development, 'new direction' planned
Saints Row 2 Associate Producer Dan Sutton reveals that Volition is already at work on another sequel in the urban sandbox series. Speaking with Play.tm, Sutton states that the recently released SR2 ties up loose ends from the original game and that SR3 will go in a "new direction."
Considering that Saints Row 2 stands apart from Grand Theft Auto IV in how over-the-top it is, we certainly hope Saints Row's new direction isn't about toning down the series.

They could cross-breed it as a street racer for optimum fun
Shagittarius @ Oct 27th 2008 3:07PM
Maybe they will exploit black pop culture in Saints Row 3?

They're hiring Gary Busey to write the story for it.

Scariest concept ever right there!

I would play it.

Introduce Mario v Wario gang war!
Honestly, I haven't become too excited with this franchise. I would rather see another crackdown come about.
Shane @ Oct 27th 2008 3:18PM
lol...Saints Row 2 tied up most of the loose ends in the game...not all...
if you play by just completeing the missions you normally see, you will end the game as if there was not going to be a sequal. Alittle adventuring in the police station (4th floor, 3 recordings plus a new mission) in the game shows you the ending where you get payback to the original leader of the saints as well as get backstabbed by another member of the saints from the first game. With that ending there has to be another game. The orginal leader of the saints had a good reason for blowing your character up at the end of SR. Truely i believe his words will be the saints new direction in SR3.
Duke @ Oct 27th 2008 3:26PM
OMG Spoilers!!!
Haggard @ Oct 27th 2008 3:33PM
All of that made literally no sense, so I should be fine if I ever pick up the game.
theturtle363 @ Oct 27th 2008 6:20PM
maybe that's why they're going in a new direction, maybe we'll be playing as a cop who has to tear down the Saints
Snowblind @ Oct 27th 2008 8:13PM
Exactly what I was going to point out. The story with Juilias from the end of the original game was tied up..
But that was one of the few problems I have with the game, they could have done far more with the Juilias, instead of making out the main character to be nothing more than a psychopath. One of the great points about GTA IV was how human Niko was, you wanted him to win. With SR2, I felt the main characters choice was completely wrong, and I couldn't agree with anything he was doing during that mission.
And as you said, although Juilias is cleared up there are still loose ends, it creates an even bigger plot point with Dex, although I could see that being finished off with DLC rather than a whole new game where we have to win back Stilwater again.
gurg @ Oct 27th 2008 3:19PM
yeah...I actually live in Champaign where Volition is based and I'm going in to get paid for playtesting a game for them tomorrow. I think it may be SR3 cause they keep asking me if I have played Saints Row 1 or 2.
zuburi @ Oct 27th 2008 3:41PM
I went to undergrad there. Is the downtown area still full of pretentious people that are pretending they live in Chicago?
ScottG13 @ Oct 27th 2008 3:29PM
I think that's reasonable. They seem to have done what they wanted to do with SR2. I don't think they can stray to far from the open world crime game and it still be a Saints Row title, but there are a lot of improvements in the genre to build out.
WRE @ Oct 27th 2008 3:48PM
OMG! Saints Row 3: Lords & Ladies Confirmed!?!?!?
J.Goodwin @ Oct 27th 2008 4:20PM
Hopefully it will involve brutal super powered cops seeking to oppress the masses in a future police state.
JJ Rooster @ Oct 27th 2008 4:20PM
That pic just made me think of 18 year old Uma Thurman taking her top off in that movie.
mmmmmmmmmm, good!
Lord Hennessy @ Oct 27th 2008 5:38PM
Honestly after playing Saints Row 2 as much as I have I can't wait for another installment. I have honestly had more fun playing SR2 than I did playing GTA4. GTA4's production values are obviously higher, but the humor and the elusive "fun factor" are just more fleshed out in SR2. Both great games, but I finished GTA4 and was almost happy to stop playing it. I am screwing around more in SR2 to keep from beating it and (possibly) having nothing left to do.
Bring on SR3!
thinktank @ Oct 28th 2008 2:00AM
Lord,
I am totally with you on everything you said. I have had so much more fun playing Saints 2, it is just totally unrestrained in every way, unlimited fun. Not to mention it is really funny. I really hope Volition doesn't try something too different, they just need to keep ramping up the ridiculous and pumping out the crazy!!
Gonzo @ Oct 29th 2008 2:05PM
Feel free to go ahead and beat it. I did and I still have fun jumping co-op into other people's games and helping them through missions. Even missions I played the day before.
I feel SR2 was the answer to everyone who was hoping GTA4 would be like San Andreas but with more.
Whatever "new direction" they are thinking of I hope it's just a new location or something like that.
I only had 3 complaints about SR2:
1 a little glitchy.
2 no lockon
3 too few story missions
C.A. @ Oct 28th 2008 10:13PM
I agree. I'm having a lot more fun with this than GTAIV. I love how over the top it is. They went too serious with GTA.
theturtle363 @ Oct 27th 2008 6:22PM
I'm glad to hear that, I loved the first one and the second one. But there just felt like some improvements that still could be made. For one it seemed like SR2 actually toned the graphics and customization down. But the gameplay was just as solid as the first. I'm really excited to hear it, they might not be furthering the perception of games as art but they are damn fun
ikiryou @ Oct 27th 2008 7:34PM
SR3 already? Hmmph. I wish they'd just continue to concentrate on some kinda SR2 DLC for the moment :/ I would definitely fork out some $$$ for that.
gregory mitchell @ Oct 27th 2008 9:24PM
For me GTA 4 was like a chore. the missions mostly made me feel like doing homework or something Everymoment i spent in sR2 was actually fun. everything handled and did exactly what it was supposed to do. and CRUISE CONTROL was a brilliant idea!!! in GTA the cars handled like boats. everything resulted into some sort of slide or outrageous drift
James @ Oct 28th 2008 3:17AM
Look with your eyes. The picture up the top of the page looks like as if SR3 is going to be in the 1800's.
It's not going to be all these futuristic cops and UFO's, it's going to be back in the olden days with the old muscles and mustangs.
With the old guns which need to be cleaned out and more gunpowder into the barrel, shooting 1 bullet then take along time to reload.
Scott @ Jan 5th 2009 3:22AM
I hate to say this , but there weren't any fast moving cars in the 1800's, haha! You want muscle? 1960 to 1973.The first vehicle to move under its own power for which there is a record was designed by Nicholas Joseph Cugnot and constructed by M. Brezin in 1769. Lords and Ladies?! Are you serious?! What are you gonna steal, a horse and buggy, a steam powered buggy that drives a whole five miles per hour? I'm guessing it will stay modern times, more realistic (hopefully not like gtaIV) and possibly multiple cities (watch this turn into a rumor over night!).
drseatbelt @ Oct 29th 2008 11:24AM
Les Liaisons Dangeruses. Uma was so hot in that movie.
aj @ Nov 17th 2008 11:57PM
saint row 3 should be called the reunion and all the gangs come back Brotherhood allys with the Los Carnales, the Sons of Samedi and the Vice Kings, the Ronin and Ultor, Saints and the West Side Rollerz. plus you should be able to customize boats, planes, and helicopters and choose were your hideout is and you should be able to choose what the inside and outside of your hideout looks like
DJ @ Nov 24th 2008 2:06PM
they have to do were like you can have a nother job like be a cop or a bar tender for more money like in saints row 2 all you did with yor money is spend it on car bikes homes they have to bring back weed bong and were you can go in the store and b your food not just go thoor the drive thoor and have more cars like a hummer a doge a lambo and better rim to the rims suck in sr2 dimid rims and better pait jobs and were you can have a girl frend and have kids an live together
dan @ Nov 28th 2008 11:15AM
they shuld make u get a family n a son who then l8 takes ova the saints at the end . u shuld make somthing nice happen 2 johnny gat or your kid become a leuitenet n him and johnny become best friends n u shuld b able 2 kill dex who becomes the leader of ulto n troy shuld join a gang agen n he shuld take ova so like all people from numba 1 shuld runa a gang u donny dex and troy n u shuld make the last set of missions longer for extra fun
john @ Dec 2nd 2008 9:53PM
more gangs please, i know alot of people want old gangs back thats fine just make a few new ones too. also make a grappling rope gun that attaches to air vehicles so its dragging you up in the air much like Just Cause the video game
Scott @ Jan 5th 2009 3:56AM
I couldn't agree more. The first time I slid at 2miles per hour I knew it was gonna be more serious than fun (are the roads coverd in ice?!). Good story, cool cars, but not being able to modify my ride was very dissapointing. I think the main things that kept me playing were Brucie because he was funny, dating, the realistic shooting and the mini-games, I actually got bored with the missions after a few nights. I played San Andreas instead for awhile until I got SR2...I still haven't stopped playing it, and I still haven't finished GTAIV...where is the next Crackdown?! I love that game!!!...but not as much as Saints
