That's right; there's just too many frights in the GCN port of the original Resident Evil that's it's difficult to pick a single outstanding one. The original PSOne classic was great, but the beefed-up graphics and audio of this version extends itself into the realm of obscenely awesome. This game is nearly guaranteed to scare. Zombies start out creepy and only get worse as the game progresses. The enormous bosses touch on nearly every archetype horror creature. And the atmosphere just oozes with fear. Though Resident Evil 4 might have the better graphics primarily due to its impressive free-floating camera, the fixed perspective of the remake allowed the designers greater control over what the player can and can't see.
I'd hate to give away some of the scarier parts of the game, as stumbling upon them is half the joy, but here's a small sample of the fiendishly good scares the game will give you. As you come to the end of a narrow hallway, the camera perspective shows what appears to be a head underneath of a sheet. Certain that it's a zombie, you approach very slowly. The cloaked figure is completely immobile, so you're positive that he's just waiting to give you a nice snap jolt once you get too close. Weapon drawn, you get within a few feet and blast away. No blood, no groans. Feeling safe, you walk over and discover that your "zombie" was nothing more than a globe under a blanket. Oh, silly me. Puffing up your chest, you examine the rest of the area and head back the way you came ... ONLY TO RUN INTO A ZOMBIE! AHH! In horror movies, this is standard practice and could be seen coming from a mile away. Yet actually being in control of the situation makes you that much more susceptible to scares.
Resident Evil 4 is definitely the better game, but I'm also certain that Resident Evil for the GameCube is the scariest game to appear on a Nintendo console.
