4GB Piano Black PSP Brite bundle nixed, sticking with Ratchet & Clank pack
Already have Echochrome on PSP, Ratchet & Clank Size Matters on UMD, as well as the DVD and Blu-ray release of National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets? Yeah, us too (except for the National Treasure 2 part ... seriously, what's your problem?), which is why we're drinking early this morning. Sony's John Koller reports, via the PlayStation blog, that Sony has decided to nix the so-called PSP-3000 Core pack in favor of just one option: the already available Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack.
The Core Pack was to be released in November with a 4GB Memory Stick (a boost from the R&C pack's 1GB stick), an Everday Shooter PlayStation Network voucher and, of course, a PSP Brite in sleek "Piano Black" instead of "Mystic Silver," all for the same $199.99 asking price. If you're really just waiting for a black PSP Brite, Koller says the Ratchet & Clank pack will be back in black (as well as silver) starting in December. Upshot: you can totally regift the stuff you don't want!

That sucks - the 4GB bundle was actually kinda appealing to me personally. Oh well.
On an unrelated note, I want to say a little something to the good folks at AOL Games. I understand that blogs are businesses too. Hell, I run one, so believe me, I know how it is. As a business, it's hard to ignore the opportunity to make advertising dollars, but let me clear something up for you. Advertising only works if you pitch the right product to your audience. When I came to Joystiq this morning, I saw an ad for AOL Yellow pages, and an ad asking if I'm embarrassed about my health problem. I don't know if you're aware, but your readership on joystiq is the coveted 18-24 male, who has disposable income - not 40-somethings who don't know how to use the internet and have crotch rot. Please take this criticism under advisement going forward. I love joystiq, and all of it's sister sites. I would like to see them weather the storm that is our economy unharmed. Unfortunately that won't happen if all the advertising decisions are left in the hands of the staff chimpanzee who happens to have a learning disability.
Your pal,
Mike

What are these ads of which you speak?
I only see content on this page, and every other one for that matter.
Long live adblock.
ZaxCG2 @ Oct 28th 2008 10:49AM
Adblock or die! Also, sending an email to them might be a better form of complaint...
but still...
seriously...
Adblock.

It's not so much the fact that they have ads that bothers me. They place their ads in a way that they don't hinder my browsing experience. I'm not anti-advertising. In fact, it's really the only way to make a website profitable, other than selling a product or charging for a service. Joystiq brings me good content, and I'll look at their ads, and even click on a few - IF they have ads that get my attention. For example, Kotaku is running a Last Remenant ad right now - it's an ad for a game, which is relevant to the content on their site. That's an effective ad - someone will click it, and if not, they're probably getting something for the exposer derived from page impressions. I can't imagine the ads I see here are at all effective in any sort of practical way.
Anyway, I don't want to completely derail the comments here. This wasn't really intended as a formal letter of complaint or anything like that - just a quick vent for shits and giggles. Besides, I doubt emailing them would really make a difference.
Anyone have a PSP 3000? How's it stack up against the 2000? Should I buy now (bundle or not) or wait for a PSP 4000?

Thanks for the feedback Mike. We're looking into why you're seeing AOL house ads on the site (what browser are you using?) I'm, for example, seeing a BioShock 2 ad, a LittleBigPlanet ad, and a Verizon ad. All certainly a better match for our demographic.
Mike @ Oct 28th 2008 12:54PM
I'm using the latest version of Chrome.
To aid in your efforts, when I use Firefox 3, I get Century 21, Wallet pop, and direct buy. Hey, at least none of them are AOL ads.
In IE, I get direct buy, aol travel, and verizon.
My ISP is comcast. If you need anything more than that, I'm sure you have access to my email through my account - hit me up. Glad to help if I can.

I, too, am seeing an AOL and 3 "Embarrassed about your health?" ads.
killbot13 @ Oct 28th 2008 9:20AM
Probably a good idea, you can always buy a bigger memory stick if you want and most people agree there are too many SKUs these days. As long as they offer it in black its cool.
ToRo @ Oct 28th 2008 9:55AM
All that for $200? Not bad. But I'd rather buy one of the old PSP's instead so I can the crap out of it. lol that's the same reason I'm going to wait for modders to get their hands on the DSi before I buy it. My DS lite has way too many uses right for me to change it for a DSi.

ah screw the psp brite im stickin with the 2000! scan lines just ruin my day yechhhhhhh! 4 gig not enough space any ways! go with the 16gig!

What is going on with Sony & the PSP right now?? I was so excited for the 3000, but now I'm really disappointed. First with the screen issue I've been reading about and now this ridiculous Rachet & Clank bundle with a terrible choice of movie and hideous silver color. I had a PSP 1000, which I loved, but traded it in in hope of getting the black 3000 4GB bundle, but they're pushing it back. Hopefully they will fix that screen issue by the release of the black 3000. Come on SONY!!! GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!!!
Anyone think its worth waiting for the black 3000 or should I just get the black 2000?
Josh @ Oct 28th 2008 11:55AM
I'd say wait for the PSP-4000, unless you really really really need a PSP right now.
ZaxCG2 @ Oct 28th 2008 10:50AM
Wait, so someone tell me why I can't just buy the PSP-3000 ALONE? I don't need this crap surrounding it.
Ins0mn1ac @ Oct 28th 2008 11:30AM
That's too bad, I was actually holding out for the core pack.
Between that and the scan lines, I think I'll just hold out for the next iteration of the PSP.
Josh @ Oct 28th 2008 11:54AM
How can we call this a "Core" pack if it was going to be the same price as the "Entertainment" pack? Was there ever going to be a *real* PSP-3000 core system -- you know, just the system for the regular $170?
Well anyway, hopefully Sony puts the PSP-3000 to rest altogether really soon, and makes the major and necessary improvements to the display with the PSP-4000.
Nter @ Oct 28th 2008 2:59PM
Don't you guys think that maybe they're holding it back because of the scanlines issue?
I think there's a nice chance that the Piano Black PSP-3000s will be scanlines free.
