Avalanche Studios is preparing to terminate 77 of its 160-member staff following the loss of two publishing contracts worth $34 million. The Just Cause developer is currently working on a sequel to that game for Eidos, which it says will receive a "stronger focus" after the layoffs, and some other game called The Hunter.
Avalanche Studios' CEO Christofer Sundberg is "positive" the company will get back on its feet, but he doesn't believe the studio will grow to 160 employees again. He says the company became "industrialized and impersonal," and plans to keep the studio smaller from now on.

I'm pretty sure the employees didn't take it impersonally.

Just cause? *not ringing any bells*
And i would hardly call the remaining poor bastards secure, as they're attached to the sinking shit-ship that is Eidos.

FarCry 2 basically shows what could have been done to make Just Cause outstanding. Personally, Just Cause had a *TON* more variety than FC2, but FC2 didn't feel slapped together.
Overall I actually loved Just Cause.. It got bad reviews, but I encourage any doubters to give it a chance (bargain bin, so it's not like you're dropping a load).. it's actually quite fun if you can overlook some of the obvious design shortcomings. Given the time and budget I'm sure Just cause would have been fantastic.. If JC2 ever makes it to retail I'll buy it without hesitation.

I had so much fun with the first Just Cause demo. By fun I do mean laughs.

Am I the only one that kinda liked Just Cause? It was some mindless, over-the-top fun for a while.

I thought it was a very pretty game, but the gameplay was extremely rudimentary. But I got it for like $5, so I can't complain.

Just Cause had many many problems, but it was also really fun in a sandbox kind of way. The same way FarCry 2 is fun in a sandbox way.. FarCry 2 just hit a higher mark in terms of production value.
If you take a game like Just Cause: Bargain Bin Edition ($10 max) and compare it to another budget title: World of Goo ($19), Just Cause would score a 10/10, much like World of goo did. It's just that cheaper games don't get hit so hard with the review stick.. if a game is cheap it generally scores better and obvious flaws are more quickly overlooked.

I do like that the solution for being "industrialized and impersonal" is apparently to fire a bunch of people.
