Joystiq review: Fallout 3

Before I talk about those hours though, let me tell you fellow Oblivion fans what you need to hear: All the good stuff is here. There's still a giant world to explore, with tons of diversions if you don't mind chasing them down. It may not be as pretty as Tamriel, but it's a lot more dense, teeming with treasures to dig up and people to meet/kill.
You still have countless different ways to customize your character, who could be anything from an evil medical genius who's got a way with rocket launchers to an angelic scientist that can decapitate a mutant with a single hammer swing.
Those battles feel surprisingly satisfying too, thanks to the addition of Fallout's V.A.T.S. system which lets you stop time and to choose which body parts to target, usually resulting in a decapitation or ... de-arm-itation. Each shot uses a number of action points, and you have to wait for them to refill before you can get any more aiming assistance. It works so well that I hope something similar is implemented in the next Elder Scrolls title.
Gallery: Fallout 3
It's still, I should note, not a first-person shooter though. I was a lot happier once I started responding to a lack of action points with hiding instead of trying to target manually. Don't play it like Call of Duty and you'll be much happier.
"You could be anything from an evil medical genius who's got a way with rocket launchers to an angelic scientist that can decapitate a mutant with a single hammer swing." |
It's not a result, as you may suspect, of trying to stretch the Fallout skin over the Oblivion skeleton. By lifting some of Fallout's core systems and aesthetic cues, this current-gen entry does an admirable job of capturing the spirit of the series. Honestly, if you're still wishing for an isometric, third-person view by the end, you're just being contrary.
No, the problems didn't come in the merging of setting and engine, they're the problems that Oblivion already had and the baggage that Fallout 3 is still saddled with.
Physics glitches are still there, with plates and the like occasionally catapulting across rooms with the slightest provocation. There's also some of Oblivion's trademark AI weirdness, with characters able to act somewhat human within only narrowly defined parameters. Try to get clever at all and they almost certainly won't know how to react. They're not huge game breakers, but they were often enough to take me out of the experience.
I think hoping that issues like this would be non-existent was my problem with the early hours of Fallout 3, and I didn't have much trouble getting past them. I mention them because if problems like that put you off of Oblivion, they're still present, though reduced.
But that's the trade-off you're going to make here. Once I realized that, like in Oblivion, I needed to bring a little something to the table, a little imagination, a little forgiveness, I was able to enjoy Fallout 3 for what it is: A gorgeous, terrifying, utterly engrossing world to explore. I really hope that you can do the same.
Second Opinion (Ross Miller)
Two characters and 20 hours in, I feel that the game is not "Oblivion with guns" so much as it is Fallout with Bethesda's game creation blueprint. The game is expansive, and certainly more colorful and vibrant than previous Elder Scrolls titles, but there's a feeling of soullessness. Environments are aesthetically pleasing, but not what I'd call interactive. The character's voices are much better and more varied, but in a post-apocalyptic world everyone's faces have been injected with an overdose of Botox. It's a little unfair to the title at hand, but after seeing Fable 2's brilliant use of a canine companion, I'm hoping a stronger relation with Dogmeat is explored in future DLC or a sequel. But despite those flaws, it's everything I wanted: Another Fallout game that stays very true to the series.

Save that shiny "Game of the Year" trophy til NOV.7 son!
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 28th 2008 1:08PM
Word! ;)
ExMcCloud @ Oct 28th 2008 1:17PM
Damn Straight! But I saw the first review for Resistance 2....It got a 9.5 But the story is only 10 hours so Gears may have a chance as long as Horde mode is as good as we keep hearing it is
Vegnagun bwf @ Oct 28th 2008 1:20PM
What does a story on the shorter side have to do with game of the year? Having a 10 hour campaign shouldn't break the deal.
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 28th 2008 1:22PM
Yeah but the guy who reviewed it on IGN is a total PS3 fanboy. Still, his review does make me want it.
*sigh
Not gonna be enough time with Gears 2 and CoD: WaW...
Damnit, I wish it was here already!
ExMcCloud @ Oct 28th 2008 1:28PM
No Im saying that Resistance and Gears have about the same length campain so people cant say "Well Gears is only 10 hours so it shouldn't get GOTY." They are on a equal playing field...So the extra things are gonna make or break the deal.....Its basically Horde mode vs. RFOM MP campain.
Kevin @ Oct 28th 2008 1:29PM
November 7th? I thought Mirror's Edge was out on the 18th...
dubbz3030 @ Oct 28th 2008 1:33PM
Mirrors Edge??? so what you can run around like a dumbass!?
DangerMouse @ Oct 28th 2008 1:40PM
Mirror's Edge is one huge QTE game.
hurricane @ Oct 28th 2008 1:45PM
Remember, there was a game called MGS4 that came out this year, too...
Bloo @ Oct 28th 2008 1:46PM
Gears is why I'm holding off on Fallout until January (and taking a vacation much to my wife's chagrin)
dubbz3030 @ Oct 28th 2008 1:51PM
MGS4... yeah im sure thats still in your PS3. i know more people playing Midnight Club LA
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 28th 2008 1:54PM
hurricane brings a very valid argument. But considering Gears of War 2's MP will actually be fun and entertaining for a long time to come that has to put Gears 2 a little bit above for contention.
DangerMouse @ Oct 28th 2008 2:00PM
The best part of metal gear online was the account creation obstacle course.
zero2dash @ Oct 28th 2008 2:03PM
You all seem to have forgotten about Little Big Planet and GTA4 as well.
GOTY awards this year will be a toss up...too much goodness to go around.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 28th 2008 2:06PM
Fenix thats exactly why Hurricanes argument is invalid....lolz...There is a part of MGS that is TERRIBLE MGO is TERRIBLE....I think that has to come into account here....Its like giving Half Life 2 a pass for the botched MP it had....If you judge a game u can not take out a whole part of the game because u feel its just an add on....Cuz the developers obviously thought it was worth their time to make......MGS4 + GOTY=Fail....
I'd rather give LBP GOTY and it has no story, hell GTA 4 is a more valid argument than MGS4
Resistance 2, Gears of War, Fallout 3...Those have to be the GOTY candidates.
dubbz3030 @ Oct 28th 2008 2:10PM
uh oh, here comes the PS3 Fanboys. ill put it like this: when i get home from work, theres nothing like curbstomping a few skulls into the ground everyday.
LBP might be "fun" but so is Lego starwars. I just dont see why you and your buddies would want to go online and play LBP together. But i guess thats what you do if you have a PS3.
Seph X @ Oct 28th 2008 2:10PM
What!? Nov. 7th?! Metal Gear Solid 4 came out a long time ago!
(Im sorry but Gears 2 isnt going to win GotY. Gears = The New Halo)
dubbz3030 @ Oct 28th 2008 2:12PM
Gears > Halo
Seph X @ Oct 28th 2008 2:13PM
I'll be excited for Gears when they prove they can write a storyline and make guns that dont shoot gummy bears, but rather bullets.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 28th 2008 2:16PM
If Gears=The New Halo
Then I guess Epic will make a critically acclaimed series that sells over 5 million units upon EVERY release....That stays in the top 5 most played Xbox games for over 3 years after its initial release....So epic will support the game with new downloable content for years making it a cult classic with spin-offs comic books and action figures.....Whew! thats alot! Yeah I'll take that game.
Gears=Greatness and best commercials ever!
xFenixKnightx @ Oct 28th 2008 2:18PM
My GOTY candidates are
MGS4
Dead Space
GTAIV
Gears 2 *yes its not out yet but c'mon...
I guess the game with the best overall package would win it right?
Seph X @ Oct 28th 2008 2:22PM
@ ExMcCloud
lolz
While I admit I am a huge fan of playing Halo 3's multiplayer (its better then H2), Halo's campaign (just like Gears) is rediculously repetitious and poorly written. The main thing Halo's campaign has over Gears and many other games is that the musical score is of a much higher quality.
Its multiplayer is critically acclaimed, its single player on the other hand is not.
Halo's single player is like Naruto : A blaze orange idiot running around yelling & pretending to be a ninja.
Halo's multiplayer is like a real ninja : Awesome.
--Know the difference : it could save your life--
ExMcCloud @ Oct 28th 2008 2:24PM
If its best overall package then its gonna be Dead space, Gears, Resistance, Fallout,LBP, or GTA 4.
The Wicker Man @ Oct 28th 2008 2:27PM
Gears had better be as awesome as it looks, so far Fallout is aces.
samfish @ Oct 28th 2008 2:26PM
Silly kids. Professor Layton came out MONTHS ago. Sheesh.
Seph X @ Oct 28th 2008 2:28PM
Since the topic is going on here are my current GOTY candidates (only listing titles that have been released, no upcomings) ordered by probability of winning.
Metal Gear Solid 4
LittleBigPlanet
Fallout 3
Dead Space
Rock Band 2 (my dark horse contender)
(You'll notice that I didnt include GTA4 on this list, thats a rant for another day)
ExMcCloud @ Oct 28th 2008 2:33PM
@ Seph
Halo1 and Halo2 had excellent Campaigns, Halo3 left something to be wanted only because it had ONE bad level...And if u have 8 levels u cant have ONE bad one...Your opinion of it is just that...There are plenty of people who still PLAY the campaign with the 4player co-op and meta-scoring....
GEARS campain was excellent also....Why is it bad to be popular...lol....I hear no talk of LBP's non-existent story, or MGS4's over-complex controls/Terrible MP, or Ninja Gaidens bad camera/terrible story, or Fable 2's failure to make good Co-op...I mean damn everybody shits on Halo but games that aren't nearly as popular get a pass? Please....I guess Gears does=New Halo cuz people are always gonna shit on it...lolz
dubbz3030 @ Oct 28th 2008 2:35PM
This can all be settled with a game of Gears of War and a nice cold beverage... oh and the ps3 fanboys can play little Big Planet togther and do... what ever it is you people do on a ps3.
Seph X @ Oct 28th 2008 2:42PM
@ExMcCloud
Halo 1's campaign was great. Halo 2's campaign was boring and the story was jumpy and incomplete (thats even pretty much what Bungie said).
Storyline wise, both are rather dry but Gears 1 was even worse.
Plot point 1 : Get Fenix out of prison
Plot point 2 : shoot alot of guys
Plot point 3 : deploy tunnel sensor
Plot point 4 : shoot more guys
Plot point 5 : deploy lightmass bomb
An episode of Power Rangers does more then Gears story.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 28th 2008 2:56PM
Im sorry Seph. I liked Gears story it was simple and reminded me of Die Hard...It was Bad ass and it looked as bad ass as it played....Period.. U don't like it so what...I'm not gonna argue with a Metal Gear/FF fan about GAMEPLAY its an exercise in Futility...We agree to disagree....All I know is Resistance, and GOW are my candidates and I know for damn sure Resistance will do a whole lot more to solidify the PS3 than MGS ever did or will do....Insomniac is gonna save this system.
Hasney @ Oct 28th 2008 3:02PM
Yeah man, Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 GUTY
*looks shifty*
JonFitt @ Oct 28th 2008 3:49PM
Nov 18th surely?
left4Dead is going to leave all the rest of that noise for dead!
antV @ Oct 28th 2008 4:07PM
Gears = overrated, gimmicky, bug filled
Gears2 = overrated, gimmicky, TBD
Superstar90 @ Oct 28th 2008 4:13PM
Samfish wins this comment streak! Professor Layton FTW!
Squnkey @ Oct 28th 2008 4:38PM
I think one of the most overlooked candidates for game of the year is 'The World Ends With You'. Fun gameplay, excellent story, great soundtrack, great art style. One of my favorite games of all time.
eNrique @ Oct 28th 2008 5:18PM
Well i tought that this was all about Fallout 3, but...
Talking about GOTY; mcCloud, do you own a PlayStation 3?, you bash a lot the Ps3,and to be fair here (I am a Nintendo Fanboy, even if they keep relasing shit, i grew up with them), I'm currently playing R2 (the beta), and let me say, Nothing compares to it's multiplayer, really, Nothing, the 8 Co-op is amazing, Hordes of enemies that you will be impressed, you praise a lot gears, to be honest, gears 2 is just as bad as gears 1, really, already finished it (6 hours campaing, no more), and the biggest promises that were: hundreds of enemies on screen, better sounds, better multiplayer, are just shit, sure there are a lot of enemies, but they do nothing more than pass across the screen(technically ,you still can shoot them) the sounds are almost the same, the upgrade that does the most was the inclusion of more weapons, that was good, really good, and the multiplayer, is just crap, only 10 players, pffffft!, the graphics are the same!!!(only with more happy colors :D)
So for me gears 2 is like light years away form being GOTY, still not a dissapointment, I was not expecting too much from it, i'd rather pick halo 3 for GOTY. Really.
Anuway here are my nominees for GOTY so far:
Fable 2
Dead Space
Metal Gear Solid 4 (GOTY for me)
LBP
Resistance 2
God of War
Crisis Core
(I did not include fallout because i think the character desing is crap, along with the unrealistic movements and actions)
Also this year my biggest dissapointment was SOCOM Confrontation, it's just crap, I'm Sorry.
btw:
"GEARS campain was excellent also....Why is it bad to be popular...lol....I hear no talk of LBP's non-existent story, or MGS4's over-complex controls/Terrible MP"
I have haven't played the LBP story mode yet, but I am sure that you have not played it either, so by your logic means that the campaing in gears 1 & 2 is shit, cuz it has almost no sense, and is no longer than 6 hours (i hear that LBP is around 16). And someone who considers a gamer whinnig about "over-complex controls"???... lol, putting apart the Konami ID shit, MGO is way better than gears MP by far.
You are Pathetic.
dubbz3030 @ Oct 28th 2008 6:10PM
Um...Resistance2 < Gears of War 1.
its not even close son.
PS3 fanboys are just mad that they are >>>>>>>>>>STILL
RerunAway @ Oct 28th 2008 8:05PM
Anyone who enjoyed the first Gears campaign won't listen to reason so don't even bother. They're already back to their intense colouring session with a pack of crayola's and a glass of milk, hoping that that next picture will get on the fridge, but it won't and you know why? Because elephants aren't orange idiot...
Conor @ Oct 28th 2008 8:26PM
wow,
a lot of the people arguing here need to get laid.
JJ Rage @ Oct 31st 2008 8:43PM
I'd put money on Left 4 Dead surprising a lot of people come time for award season. Gears of War 2 will suffer from some major hype backlash.
anthonyjh @ Nov 10th 2008 5:17AM
Am I the only one that thinks Dubz needs a steaming hot plate of vagina? You keep using the phrase "ps3 fanboy", while you yourself are a fanboy. Two sides of the same douchey coin.
LBP is awesome. Gears2 looks to be awesome. Get over it.
AwesomeTown @ Oct 28th 2008 1:02PM
Even though I loved Oblivion, "Another Fallout game that stays very true to the series" is exactly what I wanted to hear.
Will @ Oct 28th 2008 1:03PM
Honestly if it was just "Oblivion-with-guns" I'd be extremely happy. To hear it is even a slight bit beyond that makes me know I'm going to love it.
The bad physics and AI glitches still not being fixed is a let-down considering how long they've had to try and improve that. I have my fingers crossed that a patch will come, but I have a feeling that they'll never bother to patch something so major and global. In my experience Bethesda has limited its patches to "Oh noez, quest #953 is broken if you turn left before you turn right."
SkreeHunter @ Oct 29th 2008 7:00AM
I haven't noticed any problems with the physics. Stuff bonks around like you'd expect it to. Mostly just little things. This isn't Half-Life 2. The AI glitches are just them moving funny sometimes from what I've played.
Will @ Oct 29th 2008 1:37PM
McElroy's quote, "Physics glitches are still there, with plates and the like occasionally catapulting across rooms with the slightest provocation." is what I was referring to. In playing Oblivion I've found it to be very true.. some of the small objects will touch something and take off like a rocket.
imaginarythomas @ Oct 28th 2008 1:04PM
I didn't have these problems you mentioned with oblivion. Sure I noticed them but I found the world was engrossing enough to let me see past dialogue glitches and kinda-sorta smart AI.
If -like oblivion - F3 gives me that feeling I believe I'll have a great time with it.
Will @ Oct 28th 2008 1:10PM
The biggest problem I had with Oblivion was one character switching voices back and forth. That was just a facepalm moment for Bethesda.
Dave @ Oct 28th 2008 1:10PM
I'll stick with Far Cry 2, thanks.
zuburi @ Oct 28th 2008 1:50PM
The console version of FarCry 2 are gimped in comparison to the PC version, but the PC release has that nasty secuROM virus. I'm staying away from all versions of it, unfortunately.
