LittleBigPlanet servers temporarily switched off
Not too long after flipping the giant JOY switch deep within their basement, the folks at Media Molecule have had to temporarily extinguish all the lights across LittleBigPlanet. The servers will remain powered down until "the glitching issues some players have experienced" are resolved, says the developer's blog.
It's certainly been a rough starting period for the PS3's adorable build-a-platformer, with potentially offensive song lyrics delaying and staggering its debut. Let's hope things go more smoothly once everybody's in on the fun.

Oh noes!
Moffka @ Oct 28th 2008 3:33PM
It's good that they turned them off. With the servers up the game was nigh unplayable due to all the lag. They really need to work on fixing the servers and decreasing load times. I did not experience anything close to the severity of these issue's during the beta, so something is clearly amiss.

I had some serious lag issues when playing in a party. It would always work ittself out if given enough time but the lag was out of control. Some user reated levels wouldn't load at all.
Still an amazing experience but I hope they can get this fixed sooner rather than later.
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 28th 2008 4:25PM
doesnt this happen with every ONLINE game released on the ps3....???
SOCOM has had major issues...
its not glitches..
ITS THE NEED FOR BETTER ONLINE AND SERVERS....
SONY FEEL FREE TO CHARGE ANYTIME SOON..
or at least make your games playable online... lol

"I did not experience anything close to the severity of these issue's during the beta, so something is clearly amiss."
Or maybe it's just that they've got too many people on the servers now?
DEEZNUTZ @ Oct 28th 2008 5:00PM
This is the first of many Islamic extremist attacks against this game. Vote McCain and save LittleBigPlanet!

The Socom problems were actually in the Beta. I have yet to have a single problem with the actual retail product. Thats what beta testing is for. I think the issue with LBP is the extreme load on the servers due to heavy traffic. However, it's not just Sony issues ... remember the glitching Gears? Remember the Brawl fiasco?
Charging us to play online is not the correct answer. These companies need to give us the proper network infrastructure to play the games on. Especially considering the cost of the console, accessories and games. It's not like a PC.
LameDuck @ Oct 28th 2008 5:31PM
@sk8monroe81: Semi-agreed. Sony should charge a little for PSN and manage the servers themselves in such a way that stuff like this doesn't happen. *Better quality control and integration with PSN features.*
I'm not a big PSN guy, since I don't own a PS3 now, but the games I've played on it have been laggy. Madden is unplayable for me, Vegas 2 glitchs like a crack-head in withdraw, and... well... thats all. lol Voice use to screw up a lot, but it's been good since the last update.
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 28th 2008 7:40PM
johnny- there were many socom issues after launch. the beta is another story.
there are thousands of forum discussions on the ps3 website. look them up if you wish.
there are so many lists of about 10 - 20 items that NEED to be patched in the game, that many believe should have been a part of the shipped product.
let alone all the server issues and lost connections..
LBP at least you admit the issues there.
r6v2, gta4, cod4, on and on... so many ps3 titles have had bad online issues, that the 360 version of those games did not.
gears of war was released 2 years ago, this type of thing shouldnt be happening today.
charging us to play online is not the answer. having the console company take more control over the online community and servers is important though.
el serpiente @ Oct 28th 2008 9:24PM
What, is sk8monroe the new PS3-hater fud-monkey around here?
ExMcCloud @ Oct 28th 2008 3:30PM
Well atleast PSN still works...Im looking at u Xbox Live......U better not FAIL me again when GOW 2 comes into my home!
Hala Madrid!! @ Oct 28th 2008 4:06PM
remember those 24hrs of down time? Yeah, ITS BEEN FIXED!
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 28th 2008 4:26PM
xbox live gold members got a free game for that downtime during november 2007.
and remember that was halo 3 online with cod 4 online at the same time...
the servers on live have been fixed since as more players have been playing online since that time.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 28th 2008 4:39PM
U guys are correct..But that Down week of Xbox live was the worst I couldn't play Halo...I was hurt...Im glad Microsoft gave us a game though...They made up for it!
PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Oct 28th 2008 5:30PM
I thought Undertow sucked real bad. Hated it. As I recall the problem was a bit longer than a week. It was around the christmas holidays and went through the first of the year. The problem was not with every user though. They did do their best to make up for it but I still thought the game they gave me was awful.
We will probably see Live servers get hit hard again when Gears 2 launches here soon. It's just something that happens at the launch of these console games. Fact of life.
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 28th 2008 7:44PM
johnny gta 4 was a huge release and not many 360 online issues were reported.
however the ps3 version had many hang ups at launch.
its not because of traffic.
its more becuase of servers, and issues that can be controlled by the console company and developers.
in holiday 2007 there were 2 huge releases that caused server issues on live. cod4 and halo 3... gears of war 2 will not sell more copies than both of those games.
Dirty @ Oct 28th 2008 3:31PM
Certainly Allah has cursed them.
copa @ Oct 28th 2008 4:29PM
Hmm, I wonder why Allah cursed the online functionality of PS3's GTA4 at launch.
And I'm curious why Allah cursed SOCOM.
And Giant Bomb even reports that there are online-related hangs/crashes in the PS3 version of Fallout 3.
There must be some divine pattern to his vengeance, but I can't quite see what it is...
Dirty @ Oct 28th 2008 4:32PM
He plays the xbox?
Noshino @ Oct 28th 2008 4:42PM
so then it must have been Jehovah whom cursed Halo 3's online multiplayer?
Dirty @ Oct 28th 2008 4:44PM
Vishnu is all about the DS.
Trev @ Oct 28th 2008 4:53PM
Are we crediting Gears' host advantage to Quetzalcoatl then?
mattrob24 @ Oct 28th 2008 5:01PM
Allah is an achievement wh0r3.
Hala Madrid!! @ Oct 28th 2008 5:31PM
@Noshino
Jehovah? who's that?
PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Oct 28th 2008 5:34PM
Socom issues were only in the Beta (for me anyway) ...
Didn't have any GTA IV issues at launch though I heard about them ...
The only bug with fallout 3 is this ... if you are logged into your PSN account while playing Fallout 3 and friends go on or offline you get a 1-2 second freeze in your game. This isn't a server issues as the game isn't being played online. This is an issue with the actual game ittself.
Not trying to defend Sony here but it's not like it's just Sony games that have server issues. Gears 1, Halo 3 & Smash Brothers Brawl all come to mind ...
Dravean @ Oct 29th 2008 1:08AM
Had huge issues yesterday which made me sad...
Blank-Mage @ Oct 28th 2008 3:36PM
I think Penny Arcade was right, I can't wait to see what user created content crops in that wretched hive of scum and villainy, and the horrible backlash it will inevitably bring.
Trev @ Oct 28th 2008 3:44PM
It worked great right away at least. Then it went downhill and you could tell the servers were getting hammered.
I also underestimated the amount of stuff I need to dig out of the "story" levels, so I guess I'm ok for now. There's a lot more exploring than I thought.
Courtney @ Oct 28th 2008 3:45PM
So who will be the first to make a "Wrath of the Glitch King" level when they come back up?
I still need to go out and buy this.
zuburi @ Oct 28th 2008 3:53PM
Funny, I'm pretty close to returning mine while I still can!
Zertoss @ Oct 28th 2008 4:00PM
Heh, Wrath of the Glitch King. I'm +'ing that.
Dave @ Oct 28th 2008 3:54PM
I'll hold off on this for a few weeks, and let the cream rise to the top on multiplayer.
giantenemycrab @ Oct 28th 2008 3:58PM
Kinda ironic that the PS3's supposed flagship title is having a rough start.. Not unlike the console itself.
brickwalker0 @ Oct 28th 2008 4:01PM
how is it ironic? do you have any idea how awful of a launch WoW had for its first month?
LBP is trying something completely new and different, and for that i commend them.
Zertoss @ Oct 28th 2008 4:02PM
Seems like everyone who underestimates their initial install base and/or overestimates their server capacity faces this. I seem to remember WoW getting off to a rough start too.
DigTheDoug @ Oct 28th 2008 4:07PM
Irony: The use of words to convey the opposite of their literal intention.
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 28th 2008 4:28PM
SOCOM had a bad start too...
Dr. Stabbingworth @ Oct 28th 2008 4:52PM
I think you mean verbal irony, digthedoug, one of several definitions of irony.

Hyams @ Oct 28th 2008 6:10PM
You mean Halo 3 never had any server issues?
Haggard @ Oct 28th 2008 6:54PM
If the world ends in 2012, when the earth has existed for 4.54 billion years, and with life having existed for 3.7 billion years, and with only mere decades remaining until sustainable space travel and planetary colonisation;
This, is irony.

Whatever. I mean, name one game in which online functionality was perfect from day one. Yeah, this is a little more sever than one would want, but the game will end up being better for it and within a week will be kicking sackboy ass all over the freaking world.
Mal F4cti0n @ Oct 28th 2008 6:01PM
Only games that are all good from day one are the ones nobody plays.
Atomicwaist @ Oct 28th 2008 4:24PM
How am I to download my launch suit and t-shirt? They better have them when the servers come back.
PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Oct 28th 2008 5:35PM
Lot's of speculation on that. They weren't within the game last night while playing online. My bet is that they will show up as free DLC on the PSN during this Thursdays update. You can access you pre-order DLC now though.
aliss77777 @ Oct 28th 2008 4:27PM
while we are heaping doom and gloom on sony did you see how few ps3's sold in JPN last month? they are getting skullf***ed in their home territory. better hope that psp3000 becomes as popular as andre-3000 here in the states
