Not too long after flipping the giant JOY switch deep within their basement, the folks at Media Molecule have had to temporarily extinguish all the lights across LittleBigPlanet. The servers will remain powered down until "the glitching issues some players have experienced" are resolved, says the developer's blog.
It's certainly been a rough starting period for the PS3's adorable build-a-platformer, with potentially offensive song lyrics delaying and staggering its debut. Let's hope things go more smoothly once everybody's in on the fun.

It's good that they turned them off. With the servers up the game was nigh unplayable due to all the lag. They really need to work on fixing the servers and decreasing load times. I did not experience anything close to the severity of these issue's during the beta, so something is clearly amiss.

I had some serious lag issues when playing in a party. It would always work ittself out if given enough time but the lag was out of control. Some user reated levels wouldn't load at all.
Still an amazing experience but I hope they can get this fixed sooner rather than later.

Or maybe it's just that they've got too many people on the servers now?

The Socom problems were actually in the Beta. I have yet to have a single problem with the actual retail product. Thats what beta testing is for. I think the issue with LBP is the extreme load on the servers due to heavy traffic. However, it's not just Sony issues ... remember the glitching Gears? Remember the Brawl fiasco?
Charging us to play online is not the correct answer. These companies need to give us the proper network infrastructure to play the games on. Especially considering the cost of the console, accessories and games. It's not like a PC.

@sk8monroe81: Semi-agreed. Sony should charge a little for PSN and manage the servers themselves in such a way that stuff like this doesn't happen. *Better quality control and integration with PSN features.*
I'm not a big PSN guy, since I don't own a PS3 now, but the games I've played on it have been laggy. Madden is unplayable for me, Vegas 2 glitchs like a crack-head in withdraw, and... well... thats all. lol Voice use to screw up a lot, but it's been good since the last update.

johnny- there were many socom issues after launch. the beta is another story.
there are thousands of forum discussions on the ps3 website. look them up if you wish.
there are so many lists of about 10 - 20 items that NEED to be patched in the game, that many believe should have been a part of the shipped product.
let alone all the server issues and lost connections..
LBP at least you admit the issues there.
r6v2, gta4, cod4, on and on... so many ps3 titles have had bad online issues, that the 360 version of those games did not.
gears of war was released 2 years ago, this type of thing shouldnt be happening today.
charging us to play online is not the answer. having the console company take more control over the online community and servers is important though.

xbox live gold members got a free game for that downtime during november 2007.
and remember that was halo 3 online with cod 4 online at the same time...
the servers on live have been fixed since as more players have been playing online since that time.

I thought Undertow sucked real bad. Hated it. As I recall the problem was a bit longer than a week. It was around the christmas holidays and went through the first of the year. The problem was not with every user though. They did do their best to make up for it but I still thought the game they gave me was awful.
We will probably see Live servers get hit hard again when Gears 2 launches here soon. It's just something that happens at the launch of these console games. Fact of life.

johnny gta 4 was a huge release and not many 360 online issues were reported.
however the ps3 version had many hang ups at launch.
its not because of traffic.
its more becuase of servers, and issues that can be controlled by the console company and developers.
in holiday 2007 there were 2 huge releases that caused server issues on live. cod4 and halo 3... gears of war 2 will not sell more copies than both of those games.

Hmm, I wonder why Allah cursed the online functionality of PS3's GTA4 at launch.
And I'm curious why Allah cursed SOCOM.
And Giant Bomb even reports that there are online-related hangs/crashes in the PS3 version of Fallout 3.
There must be some divine pattern to his vengeance, but I can't quite see what it is...

Socom issues were only in the Beta (for me anyway) ...
Didn't have any GTA IV issues at launch though I heard about them ...
The only bug with fallout 3 is this ... if you are logged into your PSN account while playing Fallout 3 and friends go on or offline you get a 1-2 second freeze in your game. This isn't a server issues as the game isn't being played online. This is an issue with the actual game ittself.
Not trying to defend Sony here but it's not like it's just Sony games that have server issues. Gears 1, Halo 3 & Smash Brothers Brawl all come to mind ...

I think Penny Arcade was right, I can't wait to see what user created content crops in that wretched hive of scum and villainy, and the horrible backlash it will inevitably bring.

It worked great right away at least. Then it went downhill and you could tell the servers were getting hammered.
I also underestimated the amount of stuff I need to dig out of the "story" levels, so I guess I'm ok for now. There's a lot more exploring than I thought.

Kinda ironic that the PS3's supposed flagship title is having a rough start.. Not unlike the console itself.

Whatever. I mean, name one game in which online functionality was perfect from day one. Yeah, this is a little more sever than one would want, but the game will end up being better for it and within a week will be kicking sackboy ass all over the freaking world.

Lot's of speculation on that. They weren't within the game last night while playing online. My bet is that they will show up as free DLC on the PSN during this Thursdays update. You can access you pre-order DLC now though.
