- 1UP (A): "Faults be damned, though; this is the kind of hugely ambitious game that doesn't come around very often, and when it does, you'd be a fool not to play it and enjoy the hell out of it and look forward to the day (next-next-gen?) when the fidelity of open-world RPGs takes another big step closer to the uncanny valley's far side."
- Eurogamer (100/100): "Despite so many worries, Fallout 3 almost effortlessly succeeds in its central aim of reviving a much-loved brand to appeal to the vast majority of players. It's a thrilling, all-consuming experience that will absorb you for weeks, whether you're attracted by the action, the adventure, or the role-playing, as you fall in love with the relentless excitement, incredible atmosphere, sense of place and sheer choice."
- Worth Playing (95/100): "In the end, Fallout 3 feels like a Fallout game, and that is absolutely the highest compliment. Despite the changes, much of the charm and fun of the franchise remains intact, and despite the similarities to Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, I never felt that I was playing anything but a Fallout game."
- Giant Bomb (80/100): "It's unfortunate that Fallout 3 is saddled with so many little- and medium-sized issues, because they get in the way of what's an otherwise fantastic experience. The world is well-realized and full of options. It'll be a struggle in spots, but I'm willing to guess that most people will be able to overlook a lot of the game's problems and still have a very good time exploring the irradiated wasteland formerly known as Washington DC."
Metareview -- Fallout 3 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
73
If, like us, you were frantically grasping at any excuse to avoid Fallout 3 and give the ol' wallet a break from its October pummeling, these glowing reviews of Bethesda's post-apocalyptic prance-about are sure to disappoint you. We realize Dystopic is hard to broach, but it seems we'll just have to (somehow) make time to explore the devastated landscape left in the wake of Fallout's radioactive return.

Yea, and I was just reading on the Giant Bomb review that they are in the same account but separate for the PC version. So technically, you could get the 360 version also and double up the pointage.

im going to have to look more into this one. i hadnt planned on getting it since my game buying limit for the holidays is pretty much reached already. im going to have to go watch some videos and stuff on it first. it seems like a good one to have on my list for the after holiday drought though.
now the only question is should i get it on PS3 or 360?

If you can, get the PC version for the mods/slightly cheaper price ($50 if I remember correctly on Steam).
Barring that... get the 360 version; as dirty said, bad mojo on the PS3 version.

Yeah, I'm going with the 360 version after reading the Giant Bomb review. The review speaks directly to some of the differences between the two versions. Also, IGN has a comparison between the 360, PS3, and PC versions. It appears that the PC version is the one to get if you can run it.

Get the 360 version. It runs a little better, looks a little better, has achievements and they're going to get exclusive DLC.

I got it on the PS3 and I haven't had any issues with it. Besides, you haven't been on your PS3 in a while so maybe it's time to get another game.
The PC version would be the way to go and the 360 version is going to be more like the PC one than the PS3. I just prefer the stability of the PS3. The only 360 games I buy are exclusives. But, if you just want the better performing version the pecking order is PC, 360 then PS3. Like I said I haven't had any major issues or anything that took away from the experience but all things being equal the 360 version is probably better.

I've never played the Fallout series, although it does comes highly recommended by my friends. But for some reason this game just doesn't interest me too much. The environment looks too murky to enjoy, and that VAT system seems like it'll take much of the skill out of the game (I'm assuming this is limited usage?).
Posted: Oct 28th 2008 11:46AM (Unverified) said
It is somewhat limited, as it takes AP to use which recharges when you don't use VATS. So if you're fighting a group of 3 or 4 enemies you won't be able to kill them all with VATS.
That being said the regular FPS combat isn't great, precisely because it wasn't designed as a typical FPS it was designed with Oblivion's combat system. That works great for melee combat as it feels exactly like it did in Oblivion, but it makes the standard shooting kind of clunky.

Yeah the VATS system has to recharge and is not unlimited. It actually works suprisingly well in Fallout 3. I was also skeptical of that system but it actually worked fine. The melee and regular FPS aspect are not as polished as other games like Far Cry 2 that focus sorely on that specific mechanic. You can switch between a 3rd and first person view and catalog nearly any object in the world.
It's an amazing experience and it surprised me. I did not think it was going to be as good as it is. You could say it exceeded my expectations. There are some minor bug issues but nothing that keeps you from enjoying the game. Obviously the PC would be the way to go on this one but the PS3 version played more than adequate.
The best thing about this game is it's simply an open world that has infinite possibilities and tons of exploration.

Why do you show IGN's score as an A, but then put Giantbomb's score up as 80/100? They rate on a 5-star scale. Ok, the math's the same, but 4/5 and 80/100 don't necessarily have the same connotation.

See, there's a nice way to say things...then there's how you responded.
Could be just me, but 4/5 says that the game is great, but there are a handful of minor issues.
80/100 tells me that there's more wrong with the game that's worth knocking it down a few more pegs.

Oh, it hurts to be stuck at work. All I can do is dream about picking it up and playing when I get home.

I HATED Oblivion with all my heart and soul.
But i love sci-fi/post-apocalypse stuff.
So torn on this one.

Giant Bomb's Review is fine but from the tone of the review you'd think they would of gave the game a 3/5 rather than a 4/5.
and whats the story with eurogamer?
They give everything with a hype machine behind a perfect score these days.
They'd want to calm down.

This game really hit home, and pretty much lived up to the hype as well. It's pretty tense, and having said that, it has a given storyline to go on. I'm lucky enough to have played this game on both PS3 and 360...already...and the only difference I saw between the two were AI and the glitching. AI is weaker on the PS3 version, and it glitches slightly more. But that isn't enough to make the PS3 version any less steller than the 360 version.
I've already beat this game, it's shorter than I thought it'd be. The shooting mechanics give you the ability to learn within minutes of picking up the controller. The storyline makes you feel like you might as well be one of the characters in the game. The graphics give every single character a unique appearance held privey to them, giving it an even more realistic feel to it. The overall gameplay is slightly clunky, but you'll get over it once you get into the game. VATS is a well made game mechanic that gives you the option to target any one of your opponent's body parts; although the torso is almost a sure hit, every other part gives you a mass range of blood and gore, especially the cranium. The gameplay ranges widely, and once you have beaten it the first time, you'll want to play it again, just to remember how sweet it was to begin with.
This is one of the best overall games of 2008 so far, and is a definate Game of the Year nominee for any Magazine/Show that reviews them, for either the PC, PS3 or 360.
