it's a bit glitchy, but still great so far. VATS is my officially my favorite combat system ever.

Yup I would have to agree with most of these gripes but its strengths outweigh its weak points for me. Never playing the Fallout series I wasn't sure what to expect other than an apocalyptic setting. I loved Oblivion and for me this is more of a sequel to it than anything else.

Well I think (based on impressions only) that Fallout 3 doesn't have that much to do with the prequels except for the setting.

I think die hard Fallout fans (me included) that still want to try it, will enjoy this more if they just think it as a stand alone game rather than comparing it to the prequels.

Two more days..

"prequels" are sequels that take place prior to the first established story. So, the first two games aren't prequels at all.

@wonderflex

If Fallout and Fallout 2 take place before Fallout 3, then they are both prequels by definition.

Is this serious? I was thinking that some game reviewer thought Fallout 3 sucked. There's no review here that grades is less than 80% (4/5 or 8/10).

That's why it's the "nega[tive mega] Review." I'm sure that if you quoted all the criticism in ten top reviews of Citizen Cane or The Godfather, you wouldn't want to go see them either.

Not "This is a low review"

I hope Bethesda's next game uses something other than the Oblivion engine, or at least significantly upgrades the AI and animations.

Well given that they'll probably be developing it for about 2 years, there still won't be any next-gen consoles at that point so there'll be no need for a new engine.

Thank You!
Oblivion's great and I'm sure I'm going to like Fallout 3 when I get it: yea too much good stuff out now and I'm not even done with Oblivion's main quest.
I hope the next Elder Scrolls game utilizes a new engine too; one that allows you to play 3rd person view that doesn't look like two separate games being layered. Above all, this game needs the custom soundtrack option on the ps3.
Even if I get this, it'll be for the PC where we can mod the music and anything else. I'm not going to get 15 mins into this game if I have to listen to 16th century fife music.

Thank you Joystiq for these nega-reviews. So many games now-a-days are either over-hyped or just plain overrated. A picky gamer like myself needs these kinds of compilations; especially since sometimes even the picky review outlets like Zero Punctuation can recommend you buy total crap: see No More Heroes.

No, I'd be tickled to see a nega-review-type article but slapping together all the positive points. I've already read Joystiq's meta- and basic reviews, which were within their standards.

i can agree with a good amount of this.

as far as the buildings popping up. luckily in the PC version i have the draw distance set to max so that particular issue i don't have (^_^)

Though aside from these faults. The game in my opinion is great it's not perfect and i wish it had more to it but it's still a great game that i'll play again and again. and can't wait for the DLC>=

Yeah, no doubt. I mean I love menus and all (I played through Too Human 4 times) but dear god, it took me 2 minutes in the middle of a fight just to figure out which screen I needed to bring up to heal myself!

Of course, this is all going to become irrelevant after a few hours of playing anyway.

Really? I didn't have an issue with that at all. My only issues are a few technical glitches and overused voice acting. When I took my GOAT test the first time the game just kind of froze and the test never started. Happened to my friend as well. I just had to simply load the auto save and sit in a different seat. Only other issues (PS3) is if signed into the PSN while playing and a friend signs in or out of the PSN the screen has a 1 second freeze. I don't understand that because the game isn't even online MP. Would be nice to have day 1 trophy support as well but I suspect this will be similar to GTA IV and get a later trophy patch that requires a brand new game.

Pretty much all the gripes I expected.

I had a lot of the same gripes with Oblivion.

I'm a huge fan of the original Fallouts and had little faith in Bethesda keeping it "real".

I'm still going to play the shit out it though, why? Cause it looks really really fun.

It reminds me of how I originally thought Aliens sucked because it was so different from the original Alien. Alien being a tense pressure cooker and Aliens being an over the top blastfest. Then as I let my preconceived expectations fade, I realized, shit this is awesome.

Small guns really are the way to go. Big guns are too cumbersome for most encounters. You can pick up energy weapons fairly early on, but they don't stack up to the sheer number of small arms and ammo in the game. Melee combat is alright, but dangerous against stronger enemies.

Oh believe me I'm gonna put plenty of points in there soon, but I think I was spoiled from Fallout 2. I would just go down to NCR early and steal a Bozar and kick ass for a while with that. Oh well.

One thing I like on the PC version is the load times. With 4gb (3.25gb 32bit OS) of ram, the longest load time I had was I think 3 seconds to start the game. Save/Load is practically instant.

Post-apocalyptic is cliched beyond imagining, but for some reason i've always found the "nuclear winter" world to be intriguing

That said, Bethesda's works tend to be too big and over-complicated for my tastes. I'm not opposed to a more open-ended playstyle, but Bethesda tends to take that too far.

You can never have a world that's too open. My problem is this world is pretty empty considering the size, but it was to be expected since I wasn't anticipating to find dozens of villages filled with people in a nuked out area.

I'm a complete sucker for post-apocalypse or sci-fi nonsense. I'm just going bat shit crazy about all the games coming out I want to play, and upset that somehow I won't be able to play them all simultaneously. Right now I'm just trying to figure out what I want to get into after Fable II... Deadspace, Silent Hill, GoW2, Fallout III? The list goes on... I'm a sad tapir.

From my point of view it is. I bought Oblivion because all the praise it got and the reviews. But when I started playing it I realized that the game was way too open for my taste and over complicated. I just couldn't get into it. I mean I have played Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon and now finished Fable 2 and all of them were really fun, but Oblivion was all but fun to me, for some reason :/

I agree with most of the points, at least based on the 360 version.

The 3rd person view blows. The off-centering of your avatar from the crosshair makes it annoying trying to activate objects, because even if your crosshair is right on it, you need to fiddle with the directions a bit to really "find" it, OR you need to go to 1st person.

An option to "snap" onto targeted items would have been nice.. hold one button to go into snap mode, and click another to cycle through objects in your field of view. I realize they probably didn't want to do this because it'd make it too easy to find junk, but there should have been a compromise between realism and usability. A good chunk of my game is wasted time just trying to target crap on the ground.

The combat issues are dead on. I've given up on hitting anything that moves if I have to manually shoot, and with VATS, it's a pain in the butt to have to repeatedly watch dramatic slow-motion replays of my point-blank epic misses, even as my gun rested 2 inches from that guy's head. Would an option to skip them by pressing Start or some other key -- or disable them altogether -- have been that difficult?

It's a decent game overall I guess, but for me personally, it's not as enjoyable as the original, nor as enjoyable as Mass Effect.

I'm able to get past most of the bothersome stuff, cuz I've had some really sweet moments in it so far, and I like VATS

BUT

Bethesda's animator sucks! It was the same in Oblivion If anyone ever watched some of the Oblivion special edition content you know the lady that does the animation likes horses more than people, hence she has no idea what she's doing animating people (the horses weren't all that great, either).

There's not much more that gets me into or out of a game than animations (just look at Uncharted and tell me that wasn't a million times better)
