Worldwide PS3 sales beat Xbox 360 in Q2

The cool kids amongst you have already hopped down to the comments to start bragging/defending, so we know we're speaking exclusively to fact-loving nerds now. So be it. According to each company's own figures, sales of the PS3 beat the Xbox 360's in the second quarter of the fiscal year (July, August, September), moving 2.43 million and 2.2 million consoles respectively. That puts Sony at 16.84 million PS3s in the world compared to Microsoft's 24 million 360s.

Though we're proud of both Sony and Microsoft and think they both did a great job in the battle for second place, we're a little surprised to see the PS3 win out. Was it residual Metal Gear momentum? Halloween magic? Something else? Share your thoughts, hopes, fears and dreams after the break.

other than months where Gears of War or Halo games come out the PS3 will continuously outsell the 360 moving forward. it's surpassed the 360 with game library month to month, has many other incentives where the 360 doesn't and the online component is slowly getting there as well.

I own the three main consoles. From where I sit I play them in the order of 360, PS3, and the Wii. The PS3 is a beast of a machine, no questions there. And it is a great Blu-ray player, so it is a great package in that regard. But other than that I still give the nod to the 360 for the greater selection of 'exclusive' games, because when you take the multi-platform games out of the equation thats what it comes down to.

I'm a gamer, so I get games on all the systems, but my 360 library outweighs my PS3 library a good 8:1 (39 - 360 / 5 - PS3). The PS3 is "slowly" getting its online act together. But it is still way behind the 360, and I imagine even moreso once the NXE hits.

And I doubt the PS3 will outsell the 360 given the huge price-point difference. The 360 is now the cheapest of three consoles @ $200 for the arcade model. That is a price point where casual gamers will start picking up a game system. Once the PS3 hits that mark, then we can talk. But I think the PS3 is just getting a good surgence from being a Blu-ray player more than it is a gaming console.

When HOME hits, a lower price comes along, and Blu-ray is even more mainstream...then it will come into its own. Games like LittleBigPlanet will definitely help though. I guess we'll just wait and see what happens.

And this is coming from a PS3 only owner.

Nintendo definitely knows how to market, theyve been the mcdonalds of the gaming industry ever since the n64 or there after....cheaper quality for cheaper price. They really have a solid team but its not gonna last too much longer as prices go down and expectations go up.

i dont know about you guys, but the 360 may have a few more exclusives than ps3, but if you ask me, the ps3 is a F****** "MONSTER"....its the lamborghini/cadilac of the consoles...in my opinion it doesn't matter who sells more, it matters what you get for "your" money....the ps3 is/has: 1) the best HD output of the three 2) much longer lasting than the 360 (i had my 360 for 4 months and it stoped working/broke). 3) it has a freakin web browser....what do you think im using right now...i dont even own a pc/laptop. 4) MGS4.... enough said. 5) 550 MHz GPU (360 has 500 MHz GPU) 6) blue tooth (360 doesn't). 7) wireless internet adapter already installed (FREE) ($100 for 360). 8) BLU RAY!!!. 9) PSN is free..... and thats just to name a few...so in the end what system do you think is better? i think its pretty obvious..in comparison (and in words you MS loyals can understand) the ps3 is like a scarab stepping on a grunt compared to the others in both value for your buck and overall performance. so take that xbox

just so you know, the blu ray carries over to the games as well, and for the less inteligent out there i will point out that its a big difference... considering xbox games have about 8 GB, and ps3 games have about 50 GB of memory...need i point out AGAIN that its quite the difference. and also i would like anybody to correct me if any of that was wrong, if you ask me, the facts are on my side...

Well - I'm one of those who, after a long time of pondering, got a PS3 in August.

After the HD fight was over, it was pretty easy for me to choose the PS3 over the XBOX.

So this all because of Blu-ray. And I bet I'm not the only one.

well, i have to be honest.... i first got my ps3 because i am a long time sony fan..... but in the end i made the right choice
