It's unfortunate that such an amazing game is having such a shaky launch.
I honestly thought that the beta would have been a sufficient load stress test for the servers. I guess not. Hopefully they get all these issues ironed out soon!
KingOfGods @ Oct 30th 2008 2:12PM
This happened briefly during the beta. When that website gave out 100,000 codes towards the end of the beta the system was at a crawl that night. They should have seen this coming.
Popfrogs @ Oct 30th 2008 2:15PM
@KoG: Yeah I noticed this too. The day that USA Today or whatever newspaper gave out a ton of codes, the servers were bogged down for hours. After everyone got settled (accounts created, etc.) the servers went back to normal.
I think it's the act of registering that really kicks their ass, not the gameplay.
squirtforce @ Oct 30th 2008 11:59AM
Seems like the PSN is getting slammed with all the new games out. I couldn't get into a single map last night of LPB, motorstorm 2 dropped me a couple times, and the resistance beta was being a bit tricky to get into a game as well. NOT A GOOD NIGHT TO TRY AND IMPRESS MY IDIOT FRIENDS WITH NEW PS3 GAMES.
Killjebus @ Oct 30th 2008 12:04PM
Like I said in a different post, the servers and this patch were up and running last nite, and my son was playing this morning and they were working flawlessly.
BUY THIS GAME, I cannot stress it enough.
TheNewmanDynasty @ Oct 30th 2008 12:14PM
So how many MORE articles on LBP huh...
Vidikron @ Oct 30th 2008 1:18PM
How many MORE names are you going to use? And mow much MORE whining about all things Sony will we have to put with from you?
Vidikron @ Oct 30th 2008 1:19PM
*how
Killjebus @ Oct 30th 2008 1:58PM
In the words of the late, great Carl Sagan....mBilleeuns and Billyuns
You my Obama supporting friend are going to need a palate full of Kleenex tissues for all of those tears.
LBP is here to stay, and since new, more creative user levels will be uploaded daily, the articles will keep coming, and the sales articles.
LBP=GOTY!!!!
MBO @ Oct 30th 2008 9:06PM
A few million more positive ones, I hope. As I say, once a LBP fan forever a LBP fan.
Mr Khan @ Oct 30th 2008 12:18PM
Looks like they could have put that Quranic delay to extra use
Though these problems are often unpredictable, especially on something of this scope and popularity
Eh @ Oct 30th 2008 12:19PM
Sounds like their PrivatePublicBeta was a bit too small for them to accurately test their servers.
Jakka @ Oct 30th 2008 12:21PM
Strange considering that every last fucking LBP fan along with their dogs got in.
Eh @ Oct 30th 2008 12:39PM
They only gave out a few thousand, and a lot of people if not most people that got in also got multiple keys because of the crappy systems put in place to distribute them (plus all the places ran out of keys after only a couple minutes). So unless only a few thousand people wanted the game then I would say youre wrong.
Eh @ Oct 30th 2008 12:27PM
Looks like their PrivatePublicBeta wasnt big enough to accurately test their servers.
Eh @ Oct 30th 2008 12:28PM
stupid delays
343 Guilty Fart @ Oct 30th 2008 12:34PM
Things seem to be relatively lag free for me now, but does anyone else have any Play/Create/Share points? I seem to have lost all mine?
j.howlett @ Oct 30th 2008 12:51PM
i was playing online levels last night just fine during the baseball game. i got a few trophies even. i fell asleep watching the news and all the people on broad street celebrating. i got the patch this morning and still going smooth
Vader @ Oct 30th 2008 12:53PM
Yesterday afternoon, I was able to log in for the first time since Saturday and play some user created content. There was some pausing and slowdown, but the rest of the time it worked great. I'm still not happy with the launch...but I'm enjoying the game a lot.
BTW...weeks ago, I read that they were going to have an astronaut and some other character available free for launch week. Did they ever do that? I can't seem to find them.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 30th 2008 1:06PM
I haven't seen it either BUT i downloaded my pre-order code stuff....Kratos FTW!
Vidikron @ Oct 30th 2008 1:15PM
My guess is that the astronaut outfit will appear in the PSN store when it updates today.
ExMcCloud @ Oct 30th 2008 1:10PM
Me thinks Sony needs to evauluate their choice for servers...They use dedicated servers right? Maybe they should go with P2P like XBL...I know Im gonna get raped for saying that but seriously...Its no way a launch as relativly small as this should be so disastorous period. What the hell u think is gonna happen when Home hits, and EVERYBODY is on at one time instead of a small population on PS3 Gamers cuz I know this game didn't sell a shit ton of copies.
Squirtforce @ Oct 30th 2008 1:35PM
They do have both. Burnout uses P2P, so it's up to the developer I think. It seems like Sony's 1st party stuff though is always served themselves and constantly on fire/exploding for a good week or two.
ejamer @ Oct 30th 2008 1:33PM
Does anyone else see something wrong when the latest, greatest, and most anticipated console games need patching immediately following release? Or when console games need patching *at all*?
This is becoming more and more common, and it's a trend I don't like one bit.
RiccochetJ @ Oct 30th 2008 1:51PM
I don't at all. This generation of games is more complex than anything that has been released before on older consoles. Online components alone have exponentially increased the number of bugs that can occur and may not be caught during the QA process.
j.howlett @ Oct 30th 2008 1:58PM
games that access the internet need patches from time to time. i had to download patches for socom on ps2
Zertoss @ Oct 30th 2008 2:18PM
Back in MY day we used to walk 30 furlongs just to push a hoop with a stick, and we liked it!

Popfrogs @ Oct 30th 2008 2:19PM
I don't like it when a game ships with glaring flaws. This game is just having connectivity issues thanks to the giant launch and huge influx of new players. For a game that's more than 50% online, it's hard to plan for from an IT perspective.
Every major networked game on any platform has this problem. After a few weeks it settles down. I find it curious that Sony is patching the game so frequently already though.
ejamer @ Oct 30th 2008 3:02PM
Some of you guys might be willing to turn a blind eye... but the LBP problems aren't isolated to connectivity problems or misjudging the initial server load - patches are regularly used because games simply aren't finished when they are being released.
Control issues. Missing, broken, or offensive content. Things not working the way they are supposed to. And then the magical patch comes to make it all better - while causing more problems for any early adopters. Freezing systems and deleting save data? Great.
Gamers (especially fanboys) just slurp patches up and think that companies who provide a game and/or service that isn't ready for production in the first place are doing them a favor.
If it only happened once or twice, I'd be willing to overlook mandatory patches. But when it starts to become part of the PS3 gaming culture (especially when paired with mandatory installs) it's a huge turn-off. These are the very reason I moved away from PC gaming in the first place.
DigDug @ Oct 30th 2008 4:09PM
Indeed, almost every 360 title recently was totally broken due to game breaking bugs. Fable II Rockband 2 and more...
At least the PS3 titles work, and the server issues are usually sorted out in a couple of days. I seem to recall Xbox Live being down for about 3 weeks last Xmas....
ejamer @ Oct 30th 2008 4:15PM
Good point - this isn't specific to one game or even one system... it's a growing trend in gaming across the board. Nintendo has been less prone to these issues (mostly because the Wii has no hard drive and less online gaming), but even they had the huge Guitar Hero mono audio screwup last Christmas.
LBP will be a good game, and downloadable patches are hardly the end of gaming... but I really wish that companies were spending more time and money on QA and testing BEFORE games were released, instead of the "must meet release schedule dates at all costs, and will patch later as necessary" efforts that are becoming so common.
Oh well.
:p
sk8monroe81 @ Oct 30th 2008 6:39PM
dig dug- its hard to compare a glitch or 2 with an open world RPG game vs. a side scrolling game like LBP.
fable 2 encountering some glitches.. its an open world game. duh.
Haon @ Oct 30th 2008 2:17PM
Man this sucks. I guess I should wait a couple of weeks for all this stuff to be worked out before I jump back into this great game.
Vcize @ Oct 30th 2008 2:27PM
Seriously though, we may as well just wait an extra week to buy any PS3 game that we're looking to be played online, because trying to get online right away is just a waste anyway.
Sadly, this pushes both LBP and R2 back into Gears 2 territory, which means they'll both have to wait until well into next year. At least there will be tons of LBP content by then.
Vader @ Oct 30th 2008 2:32PM
@Vidikron
So, if the "launch week" costumes (Astronaut and whatever the other one is) go up, is there any website I can check to find out about that? Does the PSN Store have an online inventory or something? I just want to make sure I don't miss it....this and the bonus costumes were my first DLC for a PS3 game.
Vidikron @ Oct 30th 2008 4:41PM
The Joystiq usually posts everything contained in the weekly update as does their sister site ps3fanboy. But the easiest way it to just go into the PSN store and select "New Releases" from the main menu. All the newest releases are listed at the top. So if it does appear in the store today that's where you'll find it listed.
peepoop @ Oct 30th 2008 2:51PM
Have you read this thread? Sony kids are so desperate for a quality title that they're actually being civil and excusing these B.S. shenanigans. If this were a Microsoft or Nintendo title and it had these huge service hiccups, Joystiq comments would be a flaming heap of fanboy rage.

DemonGSides @ Oct 30th 2008 3:06PM
They're having problems because no one has ever wanted play a Playstation 3 Game as much as this one. Imagine if they had the Xbox 360 or Wii install base; they'd go belly up because of this.
BlackBeltJones @ Oct 30th 2008 5:36PM
Kinda happy I waited on this.
Vader @ Oct 30th 2008 5:40PM
@peepoop,
I'm actually kinda surprised at how calm people are being all things being considered. I don't mind popping in a game and having it take an update the first time I connect to the internet, but I bought Little Big Planet on Saturday and couldn't use half of the game until yesterday afternoon because their stupid servers were down.
It's probably the worst video game experience I've ever had out of the box....but it's almost a non-event according to the rest of internet. :-)
That being said, it was working last night when I played (by "working", I mean I could connect, not that it was a smooth experience).....and I do think the game is awesome.
peepoop @ Oct 30th 2008 5:55PM
My initial post was a little bit of troll bait, but I had some seriousness in it (that I'm glad you were able to filter through): This really is a kind of a surprising "non-event" for such a high-profile release. You would think there would be a little more outrage, but with the not-so-great first week sales numbers (
peepoop @ Oct 30th 2008 5:56PM
(continued from above, comment was cutoff somehow)
..., but with the not-so-great first week sales numbers (less than 170k, vgchartz) maybe there just aren't enough users to gauge a response.
