Rumor control: Xbox 360 HD Netflix HDCP issues
25
Tips have been coming in today saying that streaming HD Netflix content requires a television set with HDCP, leaving some users with older TVs worried that the service will not work. As Engadget reports, the problem only relates to digital connections like HDMI and DVI. As such, the problem should only affect those using an HDMI-to-DVI converter on an older set without HDCP. Even for those in this situation, HD content will still work just fine over either component or VGA (see the above image). So, most of you can stop sweating. In the rare case that your only option is DVI, you may be out of luck.

Whew! Glad to know it works over VGA. No more worries.

DVI can work with HDCP as well. A *few* older HDTV's with DVI did not support HDCP. The bigger issue will be with people using computer monitors via DVI, which are more likely to not support HDCP (although some still do).
VGA or component of course remains an option for virtually all of these people though.

I use an HDCP HDMI to DVI connection to my DVI only TV for my set top box.
Although HDCP capable DVI only sets are rare because most sets had gone HDMI only by the time HDCP became a must have for HD sets.

My component cables going to get me 1080p or do I get cut down to 1080i or lower?

Depends. Does your TV support 1080p over component? Some of the early TVs did, but eventually manufactures changed to only allow 720p or 1080i max over component.

As far as I can tell mine doesn't switch over to anything less than 1080p. I have it set to 1080p in the 360 settings and everything seems to be running correctly, so I guess I am set. Although my tv is only 6-10 months old too.

I wish my 360 had an HDMI port in the back instead of using component.

this rumor has already been debunked, it works fine over any of the mentioned cables.

yes, but it's like $70 or $90. I think MadCatz makes one. I saw one in Best Buy on clearance. I had to explain the the guy that worked there that it was being cleared out because it only works with the older models. I think the guy next to him ended up getting it for $30.

So I've read everything on the HDMI/DVI/HDCP Link stuff. I have an older Hitachi HDTV with only DVI and not HDCP- SO of course I get the message. Now my 360 elite used to upconvert my DVD's to 1080i when I used component cables. It seems I'm only getting 480p now. I still get 1080i when I watch Netflix though. Any answers/thoughts?
