Tucked away in a newly released Nintendo software schedule PDF is the first confirmation that the "Play on Wii" series of GameCube Wiimakes is US-bound. Re-tooled versions of Pikmin and Mario Power Tennis are listed among other titles due in North America during 2009, although no specific dates accompany them.
'Play on Wii' Pikmin hits Japan on Dec. 5 for ¥3800 ($38). If Nintendo can bring it and other GCN ports Stateside for $29.99, will you bite?

Same here. I had a gamecube, but I totally missed out on Pikmin and a lot of other great IPs that were for it.
Metroid Prime 3 is the only Metroid game I played. I loved it, but I still won't play the gamecube versions, so having those come out for the Wii is a big deal for me.
I'm still up in the air about Pikmin, but if I do try it, it'll be for the Wii. The same will likely be true for a lot of other games. Mario Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion, Eternal Darkness, Star Fox Assault and Star Fox Adventures, Time Splitters and a bunch of other stuff. I don't care if you can get them for the gamecube for $5. I like using the Wii controls and I WILL pay to use those controls with titles that are already solid on their own.
Some people really don't seem to get this, but Nintendo has brought in NEW gamers, as well as old gamers who LIKE the NEW controls.

$30 for really old games? Not a chance in hell. I can get pikmin right now for half of that.

Ok if you want to get technical it's not "really" old, but it is going on 8 years old. If you go to the store and buy used games, chances are 99% of the games you find for $30 are going to be at the most a year or so old.
I shouldn't be surprised, cause frankly nintendo overcharges for all of their old stuff but this is just ridiculous. As I said, I can get pikmin for nearly half of that price.

You cannot get a 16:9 480p Pikmin game for half that price. The Wii has already outsold the GC, so thier has to be a good 10 million people who havent touched a GC who currently own a Wii. This gives them an excellent opportunity to play a graphically enhanced last-gen game with better controls. Look what they did with RE4. I bought that game brand new on GC and finished it 12 times. Then i happily traded it in for the Wiimake, impressed with the graphical update and very impressed with the controls overhaul. When this comes out, i will surely trade in my GC Pikmin 1 to get this. There are plenty of gamers like me, and plenty of Wii owners who've never touched GC games. You seem to bag out on this idea of overhauling GC games and re-releasing them, but it's a great idea, its a great cash-cow for Nintendo since the effort required to port is miniscule, and if you don't want to buy them, then don't. And stop with the fuckin linking to 2nd hand games omfg. Find me a 480p 16:9 Pikmin 1 for half the price, and link away!

Did you seriously just use graphics as an arguing point for a nintendo game? You ruined any argument you tried to make to justify spending double the money for this. I'm sure no one misses the extremely miniscule graphics hit it takes by playing the gamecube version.

Are you a nintendo shareholder? Nintendo is already swimming in money. They don't need more encouragement to keep selling us the same games over and over.
I don't know about you, but I am tired of buying the same nintendo games over and over again, and getting charged a premium for it.
I want new fucking games. Not "retooled" versions of a game i already bought. But I guess since it's nintendo we should be grateful for whatever bone they throw at us...

Look, I'm not going to make excuses, justify what the hell this post is about, beat you over the head with justications... Fact is, Pikmin absolutely rules, I dont care what the hell you play it on. I think this GC remake crap is BS of the highest order. But goddammit, this is an incredible IP, and one of the few games, yknow what THE ONLY, game I can put my finger on and say I went out of my way to play it over and over again.
Honestly can't name a single other game I've done that for.

Seriously AK. The Wii is overclocked GC hardware with identical development tools. How much effort do you think is required to remap the controls and change the game to 16:9 480p? FUCK ALL. Nintendo more than likely has a tiny seperate development team working on porting these GC classics to the Wii so as to not affect the development of new games. You're all like 'oh ffs, why cant they give us new games'. They ARE giving us new games, they are being worked on right now, but at the same time, with a smaller team, GC games are being ported to fill in the gaps between big, new Wii releases. WTF IS SO WRONG WITH THAT. People who never owned a GC can now play revamped versions of older games for the first time without buying a GC controller/mem card, and people like me who own classic GC titles being remade will happily trade-in thier GC version for a Wiimake, just as i did with RE4.
No i'm not a Nintendo shareholder, but more money for Nintendo means more money to sink into a HD Wii 2.0

A real class act that Bm guy is. You can say waaah all you want, but I'm not the fool that's going to pay double the price for an old game. So instead of blurting out such an immature response, you could check your fanboyish behavior at the door and listen to me and you'll end up saving some money to maybe buy more wii stuff.

tmacairjordan87, here is your problem in this argument. The word "used". Yeah, when its used you can get it for $15. But what about new? I think its $20. SO how is $10 more a problem? I may not like Nintendo's price plans for some games, but at least this is reasonable. But, I wont pick up either of these most likely, I will however get Metroid if they release those here.

It's thinking like that, Erik, that allows Nintendo, and any other giant multinational, to get away from with this bullshit.
I'm not saying there's anything innately wrong with republishing these games with Wii controls, Nintendo are a business and, as such, they'll act in as expected. But don't side with the corporation, any corporation: don't rationalize these empty actions. Call it out for what it is. A cash in, simple as. An avaricious cash in.

Yeah, how DARE Nintendo price their games at a point that people are still willing to pay, while still getting the maximum amount of profit they can from it! They act like they still own the game or something, and I just won't stand for that type of thinking.
Obviously I'm part of an insignificant yet obnoxiously vocal minority, so the only way that I stand any chance of getting these games that I want so very badly at a pricepoint that meets my unreasonable expectations will be to call every single person that likes this idea a moronic corporate sheep. When they don't buy it, stores will be FORCED to lower their price just to get rid of excess stock.
Seriously, STFU. People like Wii controls. People will pay for games that implement those controls well. If I know I enjoy playing a game using Wii controls more, then why should I pay ANYTHING for a version that doesn't implement those controls when there's a version that does on the market?
When people who already own the gamecube version get the Wii version, what do you think they're going to do with their old copy? Yeah, SELL IT. This will put more copies of the gamecube version out on the used games market which will in turn drop the price of getting the gamecube versions secondhand even lower.
So if you don't see any difference between the gamecube and the wii, then you should be cheering for this too. Soon you'll be able to get the gamecube versions at next to nothing.
The only reason anyone has to complain is if they really want the Wii version but they're too cheap to pay. Even then, that's just a matter of patience. Wait for used copies to hit the market for a bit and bam, you've just hit the $20 - $25 range for the Wii version, which is only $10 more than what you can get the gamecube versions for now.

While I do think a lot of these games would work well on the Wii, I'm not going to re-buy them just for a new control scheme. There are so many other titles for the PS3 and 360 coming out this year and next that need my money instead.

Probably pick up Pikmin, though i'll pass on Mario Power Tennis as I already have it.
Pikmin, however, is still a maybe. 2009 is looking very strong, and will probably bear a new Pikmin at the end of the year anyway.
The decision will be made when i see a full schedule for early 2009. Dates for The Conduit, Punch-Out!!, Sonic Black Knight, MadWorld, Sin & Punishment 2, and Fire Emblem DS will factor in more heavily

It's not a fair comparison but fuck me, if I could get Pikmin, a game I (apparently) foolishly skipped out on for £15 then I'd be laughing. Gamestation still sells it for that price second hand. The absolute knobheads.
But in all honesty I'd pay up to £25 for these games. Since I never played them to begin with: they're still new games (in a way) to me. And yes with my jock off Bravia TV I'd rather have 16:9 support. And yes, by being able to afford a Bravia I'm also able to spend £10 just for 16:9 and progressive scan support.
... But only for incredible games and/or unplayed games.
Yep.

Pikmin is a great choice.
As for the other title, although Tennis looks like a game that would be great to play with the Wii, and despite the fact that I love Mario Power Tennis, I don't think it will work well with the wiimote. The game is too fast and there is lots of movement, it would be really hard to be precise.

Precision won't really be a problem. Wii Sports Tennis could be played at relatively high speed without resorting to flailing
Forehand, backhand, overhand, and timing to determine where exactly your shot will go (if it's the kind of shot you have control over)

No. I'm looking at my copy of Pikmin (and Pikmin 2) on my shelf right now, and I don't care much about Mario Power Tennis.
And besides, there's no guarantee the games will actually be *better* because they have motion and/or pointer controls.
In general, I'm probably not going to buy any Play on Wii titles, since I actually had and extensively played a GameCube since 2001, and I've already got almost all the major GCNJ titles that I want.
You know, though, all this talk of Pikmin, and all these screenshots I keep seeing... I'm starting to get pretty nostalgic. What a neat little game...
