Well, dear readers, we've got good news and we've got bad news ... and then we've got good news again. The (first) good news -- the promised Guitar Hero: World Tour drum tuning application is now available for download on Red Octane's customer support site. The bad news is that the application requires you to connect your drum kit to your computer using a midi-USB cable, which we imagine few of you actually possess. The (second) good news -- Red Octane is shipping these cables, free of charge, to anyone who requests one on their support site.
We suppose it's bad news that we'll be waiting for these cables to ship before we can give our drum kits some much-needed sensitivity training -- on the other hand, the fact that we won't be dealing with any suggestive, RealDoll-sized replacement boxes (or the resulting judgment from nosy neighbors) is good news indeed.
[Thanks, Eric G.]

There is another way. All it requires is a phillips head and some tape. You can find an example of how to fix the cymbal here, but the same thing works with the drum pads:

the biggest pain about getting the USB-midi cable is that activision's customer service sucks. I spent nearly 3 days waiting for them to respond to my initial request. Then when they finally contacted me, they just told me to go to a website and fill in my information (including my address). I now have to wait another three days for them to get back to me so that I can provide my shipping information. WTF... I already filled that out before - it's called my address. Why they couldn't just direct me to this website in the first place, i don't know. But I would guess it's to make it less likely that people will go through the whole shebang.

I have done this fix, and while I can attest to the fact that it does indeed work, it's difficult to garner any real accuracy out of it.
Of course, you can add/remove or vary the lengths of the tape you use, but I'd much rather have a software fix.
When my cable finally arrives (ordered yesterday), I will promptly (and carefully) remove those 18 screws, pull off the back, and undo my first fix in lieu of one that makes a great deal more sense.
In the meantime, I'll be thankful that I put Vista on my MacBook for this sole reason since even though school said it was required that I run Windows (test software), I've yet to have a problem.

So... what about those of us with broken strum bars on the GHWT guitars eh? I've had two broken guitars already and now I can't return it to GameStop...

Yes, they do suck, but not for releasing a patch that doesn't work on Macs. They suck for releasing a patch that doesn't work on CONSOLES. Shoot, if releasing software that isn't Mac compatible qualifies a company as sucking, the list would be endless. Red Octane just sucks because they released a broken product then required you to fix it through a separate platform.

You know, we should all be happy that they are releasing this software at all!
Seriously, it is better than sending a whole kit back to Red Octane, and having to worry about that kit being caught up in the postal system, or having to go to the store and exchange kit after kit just to hope you get a perfect one.
Also, think about Playstation 2 and Wii owners. Their GH:WT versions cannot be patched. (Nintendo doesn't allow patches, and the PS2 is obvious).
However, they could have done PS3/360 versions of the drum tuner, and offered a PC/Mac version as well. This would have been the best option.

Ha! I ordered GH3 with the wireless Les Paul, which crapped out on me, and Red Octane wouldn't even fix it! I support all who are ordering their midi cables. ALL OF YOU.

Here is another good ieda; why don't they just fix all of this right now in the actual game or drum set? it isn't easy, since they made what they have, but they already have the fix for those. Those who need the fix should get it, but if you get a fresh one, then you should get a fixed one. Sounds a hell of a lot easier to me, and in the end will save money.

Good on Red Octane for getting the fix out and even providing people with free equipment for it. Most companies would just wriggle out of doing anything.
And for the Mac users, that's what you get for choosing the shiney over functionality. Can't have your cake and eat it. lol

I got the drums yesterday, had sensitivity issues. Found this article (and others) and ordered my cable. I then remembered that I have an old sound card that has a midi port on it. I could find no mention online if any other Windows supported midi input device would work, so I thought I would try it out.
Sure enough, it worked great! The only slightly confusing part is that the MIDI port on the drum set is midi IN, and has to be to the OUT of your card. (I assumed that the port on the drums would be OUT).
Red Octane does mention on their website that it should work with other USB Midi devices, but not any MIDI device in general.
Hope this helps someone.
