Could you send me a link of the hard drive you installed, I'm looking at doing that as well and 500 gb sounds awesome.

These are the two I know of:
The Samsung Spinpoint

or there's Western Digital

I have the Spinpoint on order from Overclockers.co.uk, 'cos I don't think newegg deliver to Ireland. : (

I installed a 320GB I bought on Amazon for less than $100. Very easy install and now no space worries. I can see why people are bothered by large installs if they haven't upgraded their HDD, but Sony makes this one easy - nowhere near as hard as a PC install.

It's not an install. It's more like a page file. Installs are mandatory. This is just copying data that's readily used so that the load times are shorter. I wish a lot of games would use less HDD installs even if we get more load times. Oh well... Honestly if you can't afford to spend the cost of 1 special edition game in exchange for 250-320 GB then you can't afford normal games either. I mean as long as you don't install more than 50 games that requrie a 40GB install you'll be fine with a 250GB hard drive (minus 50 gigs for various extra stuff such as partitions, Home, trailers, demos, what ever)

and of course for you get about 60-70 4GB installs based on a 320GB HDD with that same 50GB leeway. Hard drives are cheap for the PS3. If the 360 makes forced installs, THAT would be something to be angry about. their 120GB were 180 dollars but FINALLY Microsoft is lowering the prices some as to not rape their clients as badly.

I'll just make it clear first that I don't know anything about this game, but c'mon, surely if a game as big as LittleBigPlanet needs only 500mb install, then this 3.9gb install is just down to lazy programmers.

Maybe not lazy, but rushed. Since this is a licensed game there must have been a lot of pressure from the publisher to get it released (especially during the holidays) so the devs probably didn't get to do some optimizing. Same thing probably goes for Web of Shadows.

So why does the xbox360 versions of these games have no installs?

I can only think it must be down to developers saving time, money, whatever, by having an install on the PS3 version.

Unless maybe its a blu-ray issue, due to blu-ray not being able to spin as fast as a DVD...or something. Not 100% sure on that though.

Its not that Blu-Ray can't spin as fast. Its the read head in the PS3. It reads at 1-2X whereas DVD's can read at 1-16X. Having some data on the HDD just speeds everything up.

Thanks for clearing that up Dark Trooper

Is this then the reason why games (Such as GTA IV) need an Install on the PS3 where as the 360 version dosen't?

Because i remember Rainbow Six Vegas 1 used to allow game caching before every play. Load times took a while, but meh, saved space on the hdd

Sorry Dark Trooper, but you’re quite wrong there; that (…)x speed of a drive just indicates the speed relative to the minimum necessary to play the content (CD: audio, DVD: video, BD: hi-def video). Because the minimum speed is different for each media type, you can simply not compare that indication between different formats.

The only meaningful way to compare is by looking raw transfer speed. And that’s not the whole story either; DVD’s data transfer speed differs depending on whether you are reading from the inner or outer area of the disc (‘CAV’), whereas Blu-ray’s data transfer speed is constant (‘CLV’).

If I recall correctly, the Blu-ray drive in the PS3 is faster than the minimum speed of the XBox 360’s DVD drive, but slower than the maximum speed. As game developers actually put data they need speedy access to on the outer ring of DVD drives, the XBox 360’s drive is effectively faster. However, just like DVDs, the content on Blu-ray discs can also be rearranged to achieve higher transfer speeds. E.g. by using duplication to provide faster random access speed, taking advantage of the higher storage capacity.

why do we even have install times? it sucks. *yay i bought resistance 2!!! what? i gotta wait 30 mins just to start it?* we could be on level 2 by then, are we really that desperate to have install times on everything just to decrease load times from 30 seconds to may be 20 seconds? this isnt the pc and developers should and need to realize that. dead space is a good example of no install times but still good load times.

Personally, I think it's a little sad that people are getting so worked up about having to wait like, an extra 10 minutes before you can play the game.

Is your time so precious that you absolutely MUST play the game the instant you get it?

And besides, if you wait 10 minutes to do an install which cuts loading times by 20-30 seconds, you're going to be saving time in the long run.

Installs are a good thing.

@ Joe

Personally, I think it's ridiculous that I’ve spent £300 on a 40gb console, spent around £200 on a few games, then a year down the line I need to spend a further £80 to improve my hard drive due having eight games take up 5gb each, which means buying a £50 back-up drive and transferring saves and need I say more?

Sure, having 10-minute install that improves the game overall isn't bad – but they don’t improve games, they’re the same (sometimes a worse) version of the 360 counterpart. So c’mon, why the average 4-5GB install on quite a few multiplatform games that don’t require an install on the 360?

I brought the PS3 because of its mammoth power and mother of all capacity disks. But Jesus, even multi-platform games need an install on the PS3 and not the 360. If a game looks great on the 360 there is no reason it can't look as good (or better) on the PS3.

Installs are a good thing? Piss off! All they do is supposedly improve load times. Well I’ll have both my 30-second load times and £130 back, thank you very much.

Bioshock did have an install, but I don't remember exactly how big of an install it was. On the back of the case it says it requires at least 5011MB, so I'm guessing a pretty good chunk of that is install and the rest would be for game save data

I don't really mind it... I don't like "Mandatory" installations, however, since its so easy to get a bigger harddrive on the PS3, its not that serious, nor that expensive. If you need a bigger hard drive on the 360 its going to COST you.

I am not sure I would call the LBP install an "install"... its so small! The Spider man one is only 1gb. I have a 20gb launch ps3 (original HDD), and I can handle that.
I laugh at the Fallout 3 install... 4.3GB?!?!?! YOU got to be kidding me. The entire game is only around 5.3gb. They are just putting the game on the HDD... Where is the PSN downloadable version then?
Thank Bethseda for a shitty port!

Yeah if Bethesda is going to start doing bad PS3 ports like this I'll just...uh..."buy" the PC version from now on.

The 800th time the game paused for my friend notifications, I wanted to take out the game disc and smash it into little pieces. Stupidest "feature" ever, bar none.

Ya, when I was at my friends house earlier today we had similar problems... The only reason I "bought" it for the PC is because they are to lazy to put effort into the "harder" system to code for.
If the PS3 version would have been good, I would have bought it for my PS3.
I will never support their products again... or until I am to old to remember this and don't care anymore lol.

Not to start a flamewar but I'm only curious, why does it take certain PS3 games like this 15-20 mins to install 3.9 gigs when it takes 360 games an average of 1.7 gigs per minute while installing the entire disc?

Shouldn't it take 4 minutes to install 3.9 gigs of data? Thanks in advance.

Because the blu-ray drive reads data at a slower rate than a standard DVD drive, which is why the loading times are slower on the PS3 in the first place.

I don't mind installs, I just wish they weren't all mandatory. Some games, like MGS4, LBP, etc., are worth committing HD space to in favour of better performance, but I just don't care enough about others. This REALLY sucks with rentals.

This has already been pointed out repeatedly. I don't know why people keep saying otherwise.

The blu-ray drive actually reads data at essentially the exact same speed as the 360 dvd drive.

Why the installs are so much slower is a very good question.

The installation of games on the HDD is always a silly excuse of xbox360 troll to come to write here.

The write speed of Blu-ray and DVD is not to blame, developers on PS3 as on PC (where there are DVD Player) have the possibility of using the HDD, and use it, because it facilitates development.

For xbox360 fanboys:

PS3 users have no problems with space, because 80GB HD already is great to do everything and those few who have 20GB, with €.50 buy a 250GB HDD (do not spend €.180 for 120 GB By MS for xbox360)
