Los Angeles Quantum of Solace launch event fizzles

Gallery: Quantum of Solace Launch
Emails went out last week touting, "Bond girls, MI6 agents, the Aston Martin DBS from the film with activities, prizes throughout the evening and other fun surprises await those that show up for the Best Buy midnight opening launch event in West Hollywood, CA for Activision's Quantum of Solace video game." Sound fairly exciting, right? You don't see Bond girls, a DBS, or have fun surprises every day.
The only problem was, it just didn't really happen that way. The promised James Bond multiplayer setup: six players vs. each other on six different PlayStation 3s didn't work. You could create a game, but then it wouldn't start because the consoles couldn't see each other. We were told we could play the new Alicia Keys / Jack White title "Another Way To Die" song from Quantum of Solace in Guitar Hero World Tour on one of the setups they had... but the song wasn't in there. Also, the promised refreshments turned out to be Coke Zero served in plastic martini glasses. We hope they shook it first.

Granted, there were a few hired girls on hand to look like Bond arm candy, but since the temperature dipped below 55 in Los Angeles last night, they were bundled up in coats. There was an Aston Martin DBS on hand, that someone kept rubbing down with a shammy (or was fantasizing about it), but it was behind velvet ropes and stand-offish. They raffled off some pretty impressive prizes, including three PS3s, a $2,500 Best Buy gift card, copies of the new James Bond Blu-ray discs, and a 52" Sony Bravia TV. However, we noticed that the same people walked off with major prizes a couple of times. Later we found out they'd been double-dipping into the raffle tickets. On election eve, even. For shame.
We did hop on a PS3 and played the game for awhile, but even on medium setting it's just too easy. The AI enemies all look the same and they can't seem to shoot a bullet straight at all. Hacking into computers or unlocking doors is a simple game of Simon by pushing the d-pad in whatever direction the computer tells you to, and hacking into video cameras involves holding down a button while you watch what amount to a load screen. And for all of his heroic traits and athletic abilities, James Bond can't even swim. The game refuses to let you go into the water unless it's shin-deep. We wanted to see how it was on the Wii, but they only had PS3 setups. It felt flat and emotionless, like our drinks.

What we were really surprised by was that no one from Treyarch was at the launch event. Treyarch is based in Santa Monica, which is about 10 miles from the event ... and no one could show up? Someone at the event told us that with the time change and the election coming up tomorrow that they couldn't really put anything together. Wait ... what? That sounds like one of the shakiest excuses since "my alarm didn't go off." Activision is based in Los Angeles as well, and they had a couple of reps at the event, but that was pretty much it. Is this game being swept under the carpet?
We decided to take photos of people buying the game just a few minutes after midnight, but there was no one inside except for Best Buy employees. They had two tables set up near each other, one selling Resistance 2, and the other selling Quantum of Solace and other Bond stuff. The manager came over and asked us, "Is there anyone still outside at the party?" When we told him no he said, "Well, we're supposed to stay open until 1:45am. This doesn't make any sense." It does when people just aren't interested in your game. Of course, maybe the time change got them, and everyone showed up at 1.

Quantum of Solace is available today, and we're hoping there's a different story when we hit the Gears of War 2 launch on Thursday.

Needs more boobs, less QoS.

I'd infiltrate it.

I like his idea.

Those events look like a success to me!

I'd go deep undercover with her.
I'd give her a Double O
I'd shake her not stir her
I'd put my c*** in her p****
....Ok the last one may have been a bit direct.

Looks like Activision likes there Bond Girls shaken...get it? Shaken? As in cold? HAhaha...ahhh...!! Anyone? Anyone at all?

Hahaha
BananaBoat, that was good.
MC Double Def DP @ Nov 4th 2008 2:21PM
totally depends on the game. no one cares about this 007 game. it's no rebirth of goldeneye. but hey, invite that chick with sticks to the GoW2 party!
Lars @ Nov 4th 2008 5:09PM
Yeah, the game is partly to blame, but I think midnight launches are becoming less popular too.
I went to a launch "event" for WoW:BC when that came out, and was the first and only person there at 11PM... only a few more stragglers showed up by 12.
BananaBoat @ Nov 4th 2008 5:33PM
I heard that it's Call of Duty 4 but with a Bond skin. That sounds like a gigantic success to me.....but it's definitely not on my buy list, considering all of the other games out there. Definite rental though
Deadpool @ Nov 4th 2008 10:16PM
Sweet! Maybe if no one buys it, it'll be like Beowolf "the game"! I'd definatly get a good movie game for $20 bucks.
Markez @ Nov 4th 2008 2:21PM
I think it's likely 2 reasons. For one, I can't imagine people get super hyped for a Bond game. Two, I think it's criminal they still make Bond movies.
Who the hell is going to those movies, anyway? It's the same horrible garbage every time. Sweet lord, remember when Denise Richards was supposed to be a nuclear scientist?!
Travis @ Nov 4th 2008 2:25PM
considering the franchise has been rebooted, and Casino Royale was amazing, I can imagine the hype for this game... That said, the new style of movie isn't really FPS material...
nothing will ever be Goldeneye...even though Goldeneye, to me, wasn't that great... it was just the best FPS on ANY console at the time..
Negativecool @ Nov 4th 2008 2:27PM
Agreed, I thought Casino Royale was a brilliant reinvention of the franchise and character.
Haggard @ Nov 4th 2008 2:28PM
Casino Royale was pretty good, the reinvention of the series worked pretty well.
Couple of friends work at the cinema though and they say Quantum of Solace is rubbish.
Mike @ Nov 4th 2008 2:29PM
Casino Royale was excellent. The end.
Ridgecity @ Nov 4th 2008 3:01PM
Some people talk without even knowing what they are talking about.
James Bond is a film tradition. it's not going to end because you didn't their choice for a bond girl. The movies are big, and even the lamest James Bond movie made a big hit in the box office. Sony will go whatever expenses they can to launch the tie-in merchandise, like the game, and make it as successful as possible. Activision probably paid a ton of money for the brand and took the time to make the game so they see it as a big event.
Gamers, on the other side, are extremely critical of whatever comes their way, and together with piracy it's making it more difficult for game companies to spend so much money making games, It's a big gamble.
Everyone was happy games were growing as and industry, but so did the gamer's ego.
Lars @ Nov 4th 2008 5:12PM
I can see Markez's point. I never even gave Casino Royale a chance, based on the recent history of the Bond franchise. Though I keep hearing good things about Casino Royale... I may have to actually go back and watch that one.
Poddie @ Nov 4th 2008 5:30PM
Anybody who says Bond movies are crap based on World is Not Enough and Die Another Day really needs to make sure they see Casino Royale before talking.
DAD was really pretty awful (at least after the first 45 minutes or so), but CR is a complete reboot and done with style. And yes, Denise Richards in WINE was a terrible idea.
Looking forward to QoS the movie... the game, not necessarily. But this is mainly because licensed games always seem to turn out garbage. I was excited for Iron Man and Incredible Hulk but look what happened there. If QoS (the game) gets good reviews I would like to play it, otherwise I am assuming it will be junk.
BananaBoat @ Nov 4th 2008 5:40PM
Denise Richards was just miscast. She's freaking hot, but she's not fooling anyone when it comes to nuclear-scientist level brain-having.
Casino Royale was AMAZING though, and it completely restored my confidence in the James Bond franchise. I'm absolutely pumped for Quantum of Solace (even if the name sucks gigantic donkey balls) I don't see how it couldn't be epic (it starts from where the last one ends! EPICCC!!!!!). How did your friends at the cinema see it? I haven't seen one advance review for the movie yet. I'm not doubting them, but it does seem a bit odd for random theater employees to have seen it before the critics. As long as it has Bond, it has grounded-in-reality action (no doomsday plot by some mad scientist....those days are LONG over, though they wasted Pierce Brosnan's talent by not realizing it sooner), and it's not too long (cut out the insanely long poker match, and Casino Royale was perfect) I'll love it. Just 10 more days.
BananaBoat @ Nov 4th 2008 5:41PM
Nevermind, I've had my head up my ass with writing essays for the past week. Apparently the freaking premiere happened, and there are reviews all over the net.
Markez @ Nov 4th 2008 8:09PM
Well it's a shame I can't go negative hearts after this comment, being I seem to have hit a nerve with all the Bond fans; I thought Casino Royale sucked ass just like the rest.
*flees
Negativecool @ Nov 4th 2008 2:24PM
Did anyone at least buy Resistance 2?
Kevin Kelly @ Nov 4th 2008 3:05PM
You know what, that's a good question. No one was buying it when I went inside for photos. They had the collector's edition and a free comic book, picture is in the gallery. But.... I wonder how many they sold.

I picked it up about an hour ago. The sad thing is Quantum Of Solace actually looks like a damn good game that is extremely polished. Considering the season and amount of great games this one just got lost in the shuffle. I would love to play it but can't see myself purchasing the full version.
Sackolantern PSN ID: johnnynumber5 @ Nov 4th 2008 3:48PM
BTW I picked up Resistance 2 not QOS just to clarify.
Courtney @ Nov 4th 2008 2:28PM
The people who showed for the raffle are some lucky, unscrupulous bastards. I think I would start hitting more midnight launches of mediocre games in the LA area if that kind of swag is available to be won.
Muu @ Nov 4th 2008 2:57PM
Let the bargain site people know and I bet you'll have one hell of a turnout; whether they'll actually buy the games, of course, is another story altogether.
Dirty @ Nov 4th 2008 4:39PM
Even if you dont sell copies at least you dont have to be embarrassed about your turn out.
benjor0x0r @ Nov 4th 2008 2:31PM
I don't think this is so much about the game itself being bad as the publicity surrounding it was. I mean seriously, did anyone else even KNOW the game was launching last night?? The movie doesn't even come out until the 14th and yet I didn't see a single promotional story or even mention about this launch. I say if anything it's a horrible PR fail.
T @ Nov 4th 2008 2:39PM
Any feedback on the supposed first look at the "Another Way to Die" track for Guitar Hero World Tour?
I'm curious as to how they charted that...
Nick the Hero of Canton @ Nov 4th 2008 2:40PM
Nobody calls me a fizzle and gets away with it! Except for that one guy who called me a fizzle and then ran away, he got away with it. But most of the people who call me a fizzle don't get away with it! Actually he was the only guy to ever call me a fizzle, but after today only half the people who have ever called me a fizzle will have gotten away with it!
Duke @ Nov 4th 2008 2:42PM
I don't get into midnight launches myself. It would take a really good title for me to be drawn out to buy it when I have work the next day and no reason to think it will be sold out when I have a chance to actually sit down and play it.
Sackolantern PSN ID: johnnynumber5 @ Nov 4th 2008 3:50PM
Pretty much have to agree. I did a few Madden midnight launches and went to the MGS 4 midnight launch btu that was it. It's just not worth it because I can't stay up and play it due to work and like you said the title is so big it will be easily available the next morning.
John @ Nov 4th 2008 2:44PM
I like Coke Zero.
Mechanical @ Nov 4th 2008 2:47PM
Heresy.
Sackolantern PSN ID: johnnynumber5 @ Nov 4th 2008 3:55PM
Coke Zero is sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium (ace-k) and has zero calories. The only chemical difference between Coke Zero and Diet Coke is that Coke Zero has about half the aspartame but has more ace-k.
http://www.diet-blog.com/archives/2005/06/14/coke_zero_confused_anyone.php
It's just a marketing thing. Like the new Pepsi max vs Diet pepsi. I guess by not having "diet" on the label it appeals to a different demographic. Sounds like it worked!
I drink diet coke because it still has the caffeine but non of the sugar. Taste like shit at first but after you get used to it (like anything) it tastes better than the original. Here's an idea ... Why don't they just make regular coca-cola with half the sugar and no artifical sweetners?
Duke @ Nov 4th 2008 4:22PM
Because us diabetics can't have any sugar in our soda for one reason.
I have been drinking diet coke most my life and when I tried coke zero it's taste freaked me out! Diet Coke is like crack though - I'm sticking with it.
Ridgecity @ Nov 4th 2008 5:39PM
"Why don't they just make regular coca-cola with half the sugar and no artificial sweeteners?"
because black water would be hard to sell.
DBoyFlex @ Nov 4th 2008 6:34PM
They did, it was C2. Didn't last long, but I liked it while it lasted.
Joel Rose @ Nov 4th 2008 2:56PM
I think it depends on the game and just too many midnight launches are happening. When game industry midnight launches started, it was just for game systems. Then, we started getting them for games- and those made sense since they were huge releases (like Halo 2). Now stores think they can make any game into a sales blockbuster by having events. Does anyone know if publishers ever influence these decisions somehow?
Katsu @ Nov 4th 2008 2:59PM
Holy crap that party looks like it was *full* of FAIL.
I feel kinda bad for the people that set that whole thing up.
ScottG13 @ Nov 4th 2008 3:05PM
I think Activision has some REALLY clueless marketing people. Its the only explanation. I'm sure they have some really great people, but they've got some really sloppy tards in a couple of corner offices.
Kassu @ Nov 4th 2008 3:07PM
Why bother with some shit film-based game?
Seriously?
Metal Geario 360 @ Nov 4th 2008 3:49PM
Yeah the genius who setup the event is a Tool Box.
Major.
Ted @ Nov 4th 2008 3:11PM
Kinda makes me sad :(
Vidikron @ Nov 4th 2008 3:29PM
LOL... Best Buy couldn't even get a LAN set up properly? Who the hell was in charge of this thing?
Ken Seang @ Nov 4th 2008 3:37PM
Obviously the geek squad...
Phillip @ Nov 4th 2008 3:47PM
"Hacking into computers or unlocking doors is a simple game of Simon by pushing the d-pad in whatever direction the computer tells you to"
Oh, wow. Sounds like... well... every other new game out there!
Bourne, Force Unleashed, Mass Effect, etc.
Sackolantern PSN ID: johnnynumber5 @ Nov 4th 2008 3:59PM
Let me tell you something ... Phillip
I picked up Bourne for $15 at Target on a clearance sale and not only is it extremely polished but it is also playable. QoSolace looks to be cut from the same cloth except it has a multiplayer feature as well. This will be another one I pick up for $15 at Target after the new year. These games aren't bad they just aren't based off franchises gamers care enough about to pay full price for. Unless they are uber rich spolied gamers with no sense of money ... or unless they love the franchises.
