Metal Gear Online: 1 million soldiers ask, 'La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo?'

We can't help but read this news as disappointing for Konami (we already know Kojima's unhappy). Metal Gear Solid 4 -- that is, the single player component of MGO -- shipped 3 million worldwide at launch and continues to sell.
The publisher has announced a second expansions, MEME, due out later this year. A GENE/MEME bundle of both expansions will be available this "holiday season" for $14.99. Not included in the expansions: A Konami ID disintegration device.

I thought everyone hated MGO...
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 4th 2008 9:38AM
Just because they tried it doesnt mean they kept playing it. It has no legs, its slow and is boring as fuck unfortunately. Looks great though....

I thought we hated Konami's disconnected-from-PSN-and-PlayStation-Store service. MGO is... kinda fun*

I only put about 15 minutes into it. And that was a couple months ago.
Emophia @ Nov 4th 2008 11:37AM
The game itself is really really fun.
Everything else about it is not.
Emophia @ Nov 4th 2008 11:38AM
Which is why I've only played the retail version for 5minutes while I played to beta for Hours on end.

1 mill!... my ass! :P
Dan CiTi @ Nov 4th 2008 4:38PM
The game itself needs far more balance and tweaks. The konami ID stuff also sucks. I loved the beta.
zhine @ Nov 4th 2008 9:49AM
Nope. It's actually pretty fun. People just hate Konami's servers.

I can't imagine there would be much profit in a 3DO game this late in its life cycle.

Why would people wants to keep on re-inventing wheels?
Slayer @ Nov 4th 2008 11:53AM
I haven't played in a while. Got to caught up in Team fortress 2 and other games. Kick ass game though.

This game was really good for offering me what no other online game really did. That's why I really enjoyed the Splinter Cell multiplayer even though it was quite flawed. Double Agent was broken though.
People expecting the shooting mechanics of Halo or CoD4 clearly don't understand what MGO tries to achieve, sure there are runners and gunners all over the game still, but those without pixelperfect aim have a plethora of options and methods to despatch of online players much better at typical shooting than they are.
It's slow because it's based around a stealth game, duh.
And I have no idea why people cry over the Konami ID situation, like no one has ever filled out a registration form. You don't even have to quit the game, it uses the PS browser in game for crying out loud, takes less than 5 minutes.
Sure, they should have followed Live/other PS3 titles in how they tackle online, but it's by no means a dealbreaker.
I'm looking forward to MEME getting me back into this game, my online action has been reduced to just Dota. Gears multiplayer has always bored me, so Gears 2 is no good, I've missed the recent H3 maps because my limited edition tin broke my disc, and I'll have to wait for Recon for my Halo fix.
ColossalHat @ Nov 4th 2008 1:18PM
The Konami ID is just like the friend code, a completely unnecessary piece of trash. If they got rid of it I guarantee they'd see a rise in the number of people playing MGO.
Problem two for me is the fact that you have to pay for everything but your first character and his standard urban camo. Worse than horse armor, that's all I'm saying.
Lee @ Nov 4th 2008 1:55PM
Yes, it's unnecessary, but as I said, it's 5 minutes, and then the game remembers it. I'm sure some more players would have gotten on it, but those without the patience for this simple process clearly won't have the patience for the learning curve of this distinctly different online title.
You do not have to pay for additional camo. Like many other online games, additional camo and accessories are rewards for playing online. You do have to pay for additional characters, but there's no need, they offer nothing but a different character skin, and if you were that desperate to change you could delete and recreate a different character.
A far cry from paying for horse armour, and it's impossible to claim that it's worse.
