Sega receives vegan, monkey-shaped chocolates from PETA
Look, we don't condone the unethical treatment of any creature forced to endure the repetitive waggling that's characteristic of rushed, rehashed Wiimakes. It's disgusting -- about as disgusting as little vegan chocolates in the shape of monkeys!
So when PETA says it's grateful to Sega for pulling the Samba De Amigo promos featuring a real chimp from its site (not that the ads aren't still on YouTube ... and embedded after the break) and sends the publisher a gift basket full of fake chocolates, we have to wonder if the effort isn't more trick than treat. After all, the damage is done. And, according to PETA, soon after defeating the down-and-out, middle-aged-man actor in a flailing contest, this chimpanzee was shipped to the laboratory -- no doubt to live out his tortured days testing the stability of future revisions of Wii wrist straps.
In all seriousness, though, kudos to Sega for pledging to keep great apes out of future marketing. Now, if only we could convince the company to be more sensitive to the plight of lycanthropic hedgehogs ...

Fuck PETA.
NumbN8 @ Nov 4th 2008 2:59PM
Damn,,, you beat me to it.
I am going home, and cooking a monkey for dinner tonight,,,, just to spite PETA.
offday @ Nov 4th 2008 3:05PM
PETA is worthless. I'm all for putting people in jail who abuse animals and crap like that, but it gets a little crazy when they start telling me I'm bad for drinking milk because it hurts cows.
And Sega deserves a big slap in the face for actually pulling ads of a trained chimp that probably gets treated better than most of us just because of some crazy fanatic organization.
Ridgecity @ Nov 4th 2008 3:09PM
actually, cows "supposedly" enjoy being milked.
bise @ Nov 4th 2008 5:17PM
oh yeah, smart thinking
blerg @ Nov 4th 2008 3:31PM
its not that milking that they mind
Transcendental Protagonist @ Nov 4th 2008 3:32PM
PETA is and will always be a joke til the end of times.
FemaleOrca @ Nov 4th 2008 3:49PM
While PETA can be obnoxious, they do more good than harm, though. Its just the over-board stuff that makes news.
As for milking, its not that they are being milked, its that they are given hormones to create a greater quantity of milk, and I can imagine cows in the industrialized milk market do not "enjoy" anything.
Not to get activist on anyone, just stating the truth.
Anyway, video games!
chispito @ Nov 4th 2008 4:56PM
PETA has not done more good than harm simply because I'd rather oppose PETA than act on my own moderate convictions on most of these issues.
I may be petty that way, but I see no good in an organization that at its core, believes that animals are more important than people.
BananaBoat @ Nov 4th 2008 5:24PM
Agreed, f*** PETA. I'll enjoy the Election Day Cheeseburger that I'm having for dinner.
Down with all forms of filthy, stinking hippies.
Oh, and I love PETA for getting whats-her-face nude. The girl that played Batgirl in one of the Batman movies. Good show PETA, good show, even though you are insane.
Kokomadeta @ Nov 5th 2008 8:15PM
PETA is so lame. They put up billboards in my state saying that cow's milk causes autism in humans. Just like Global Warming, there's no evidence to back it up.
And for the record, cows do enjoy milking. I saw this automated plant where the cows could just walk up to the machine when they wanted to. They did it all the time. It's like taking a huge piss when you need to.

The TRUTH PETA are terrorists!
I belong to People Eating Tasty Animals!
LeadBoxx @ Nov 4th 2008 3:01PM
I don't get it. Were the monkeys killed after the filming? I bet those monkeys have a better life that some humans. I don't think there should be a problem unless they put cigarettes out on them. How do they feel about parrots playing End War?
Ridgecity @ Nov 4th 2008 3:11PM
The monkey was forced to fling shit at the kids for the "behind the scenes" for the corporate christmas party.
LeadBoxx @ Nov 4th 2008 3:14PM
LMAO I need to get those Monkeys to come to my place of work's Holiday outing then.
D_Average @ Nov 4th 2008 3:02PM
Just when the chimp had his big break PETA had to ruin the whole party. Damn shame.
emmzee @ Nov 4th 2008 3:02PM
For: Ethical treatment of animals.
Against: PETA, bunch of morons.
Invisible Robot Meat @ Nov 4th 2008 8:14PM
I joined P.E.T.A. because I thought it stood for 'People for the Eating of Tasty Animals'
Octillus @ Nov 4th 2008 3:11PM
Man, I'm vegetarian and I hate PETA.
They use terror tactics to influence their opinion.
Do I need to go any further?
Louis G. @ Nov 4th 2008 3:24PM
Cosigned. They give us such a bad name. They take a good idea and take it waaaaay too far.
Props to Sega for pulling it though.
Ridgecity @ Nov 4th 2008 5:33PM
when it involves 40 naked women running around me, the last feeling I could get is terror.
feeling #1: reproduction.
Saria the Cat @ Nov 4th 2008 11:58PM
Same here. They would have a field day with the monkey ads in Japan.
Velocifaptor @ Nov 4th 2008 3:12PM
"Do I need to go any further?"
Perhaps.
Octillus @ Nov 4th 2008 3:16PM
Besides passing out pamphlets with horrific imagery, throwing "blood" (PAINT) on people in furs, and generally giving veggies like me a bad name?
Zertoss @ Nov 4th 2008 3:15PM
Can't say I blame Sega. If I had a commercial on my website and someone offered me chocolate to pull it, it would get pulled. And after I ate the chocolate, it would go right back up.
Hey, they didn't say how long it had to stay down.
NukeAssault @ Nov 4th 2008 3:46PM
Unless its raspberry chocolate i aint budging... Or the darkest dark chocolate... mmm
joeybeast @ Nov 4th 2008 3:18PM
What's gonna happen to the unemployed chimp?
now you've done it PETA.
Shouldn't you be fighting for HUMAN RIGHTS first?
Riley @ Nov 4th 2008 3:20PM
How are these chocolates fake? Chocolate comes from a tree, not from goats or something. Chocolates tend to be vegan unless they're milk chocolate. The chocolate used in baking is vegan, dark chocolate is usually vegan, and my favorite chocolates tend to be vegan. I'm not a vegan, and I'm not saying this to defend PETA, but as a lover of fine chocolate, I had to say this. Calling these chocolates fake is just plain stupid.
Poisoned Al @ Nov 4th 2008 3:24PM

Fuck, PETA took the name PETA, there goes my plan to make my own organization called People for Ethical Treatment of Assholes.
Nter @ Nov 4th 2008 3:36PM
Seconded, it actually took me a while to figure out that PETA was a REAL organization.
I just thought they were a random group of animal lovers using stupid tactics to get their points across.
I don't know if anyone else heard but there was a huge outcry about PETA's ad in NJ because apparently it linked milk to cancer. I hate 'em.
Shagittarius @ Nov 4th 2008 3:42PM
I thought monkeys were the target demographic of the Wii...
&rew @ Nov 4th 2008 3:48PM
Get your Wii stereotypes in order.
butaneko @ Nov 4th 2008 3:59PM
dark chocolate = fake chocolate?
you're all just happy because PETA's stupid antics give you a good reason to dismiss their overall message
http://www.goveg.com/factoryFarming.asp
Archr5 @ Nov 4th 2008 4:52PM
Their overall message is that Animals are worth more than people.
their secondary message is to take arbitrary and insane positions on issues while, behind closed doors, they euthanize more cats and dogs than any other "animal rights" organization.

Haha oh man, the day I see a Nintendo-related post from JRW that does not contain some sly dig is the day I'll... ah fuck it, it'll never happen.
Rhamsey @ Nov 4th 2008 5:18PM
lmao at sega taking peta seriously... i would have been like, look how much fun hes having!
LaughingTarget @ Nov 4th 2008 7:06PM
PETA killed Gordito's Dad, that's enough for me to hate them.
Paulmichael @ Nov 4th 2008 7:44PM
PETA is annoying, and needs to go the way of the Thompson. :)
Saria the Cat @ Nov 5th 2008 12:07AM
I think I am way more offended that Sega connects apes to Latin dance. :/
Shroomsday @ Nov 5th 2008 6:17AM
I think the humans in that advert are the ones who need locking up and experimenting on for their piss-poor acting.
I hope the chimp got paid more than them, at any rate.
Batzarro @ Nov 5th 2008 9:33AM
Now, this is the kind of thing that irks me. The ad IS filmed, the monkey has flailed already and stuff...and they want to pull the ad? How's the ad hurt the monkey?
Gimme a break.
Erik @ Nov 5th 2008 11:42AM
I do not eat animals, eggs or dairy partly because of ethical reasons, and I still think PETA is a bunch of morons. Their major strategies include showing pictures of the holocaust and half naked celebrities to small children. Not what I would call informing the public. They are a disgrace to everyone who speaks seriously about these things, they only bring ridicule and hatred to this otherwise serious issue. That being said, "fake vegan chocolate"? Dark chocolate is fake now? Because it doesn't contain milk? You have officially been brainwashed by the dairy industry. Educate yourselves about milk. It causes allergies and asthma, is full of drugs and fake estrogen(watch out boys!), and actually DECREASES the strength of your bones because the animal protein makes calcium leech into your urine. That's why the countries with the biggest dairy consumption are the ones with the most osteoporosis and asthma f.ex.
