Guitar Hero franchise tops the charts for '08 (so far)

As part of today's quarterly financial wrap-up, Activision Blizzard struck a high note with the announcement that the Guitar Hero franchise has topped the NPD Group's software sales chart for the first nine months of 2008. This includes, of course, every permutation of the rhythm game series combined across all console platforms and Nintendo DS, with the exception of the newly released Guitar Hero World Tour.
In its report to shareholders, Blizzivision pointed out that Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Guitar Hero: On Tour, in particular, contributed most to its bottom line for Q2. With World Tour out in Q3 followed by the holiday release of GH: Decades for the DS, we could see a similar chart-topping performance for the franchise come the end of December.

Four GH games this year alone?! If they want to drive Guitar Hero into shovelwaredom, fine by me, I'll just go to Harmonix for my rhythm game fix.

Ya, they never sell out their principles (cough, AC/DC, cough, Beatles)

Is anything sacred anymore?!
Why, back in my day we were lucky to get ONE Guitar Hero game for the year alone, and we didn't have these new-spangled downloadable whatsamacallits for extra songs...

And we liked it that way!

I think we're seeing GH and RB become music distribution platforms just like the CD, radio, or iTunes. Now that we have the basic instruments done, it's just a matter of churning out songs. Those can be packaged - like GH:Aerosmith, AC/DC, & Metallica - in band themed games or just as DLC.
No one calls CDs shovelware, although they do complain about bad music that gets published. I see GH and RB in the same light.

Hmm...the Guitar Hero franchise was the best selling franchise this year?
I wonder if that's because they released THREE GAMES this season vs. Rock Band's one.
(And no, track packs do not count)
