Sega announces 'Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection,' includes 40 titles
Don't let the name fool you, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is actually a compilation disc of 40 varied titles from the glory days of Sega. The $30 bundle for Xbox 360 and PS3 releases in "spring 2009" and outputs in 720p.
As long as developer Backbone Entertainment keeps the quality high, this is looking like a must-have compilation for fans. [Until Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection PLUS. - Ed.]
Update: Added full list of revealed games after the break. Apparently more will be announced at a later date.

God damn.
Sonic and Knuckles AND Comix Zone on the same disk?
Day one for me.
SoulBlade @ Nov 6th 2008 2:11PM
Sweet! Thanks for the list.
Ah if only they had online play - at least for streets of rage! But yea... the likelihood of that is probably zero.
This still could be a nice thing to have.

Wouldn't it be totally sweet if we could get 200G in each of those?
Microsoft would never let it happen, but man, that'd be an achievement whore's wet dream.
Stink Snake @ Nov 6th 2008 2:30PM
I wonder how much this is going to cost Nintendo in lost VC sales.
Erluti @ Nov 6th 2008 2:35PM
That's pretty sweet, although I've pretty much got all those for my Sega. My collection is getting pretty sweet.
cc123 @ Nov 6th 2008 2:38PM
"I wonder how much this is going to cost Nintendo in lost VC sales."
Hopefully people will start to realize what a rip-off the VC is. Genesis games go for 800 Wii Points each.
So this collection would be a mere $320 on the VC!!
Mr Khan @ Nov 6th 2008 2:41PM
Foolish for anyone to buy VC games that are available in compilations elsewhere
It's the ones that aren't that are really good finds, even going at Nintendo's sometimes outrageous rates
kastonie @ Dec 23rd 2008 2:35PM
WHAT THE FUCK NO SONIC CD? THATS TOTAL HORSESHIT!
CaramelZappa @ Nov 6th 2008 2:08PM
This is the best thing sega's done since... those games.
007craft @ Nov 6th 2008 2:43PM
This is what im talking about. $30 for 40 old titles all with 720p support.
Not the garbage they have going now, 1 title like sonic for $10 and not disc based so no price drops.
Im surprised we are getting this disc. I thought these things were a way of the past. There were plenty of them on xbox/ps2/gamecube but I figured with the virtual stores now open, they would never do these again. Glad im wrong. This works out to around 60ms points per game. Thats what im talking about. Maybe if they priced retro titles this low to begin with I might actually buy some.
FOXHOUND @ Nov 6th 2008 4:46PM
I'd like to be completely excited about this, but I *stupidly* bought a couple of these games on VC - which probably totals the retail cost of this supposed ultimate collection.
Goddamnit. At least now I can free up space on the Wii. Not that I was using it anyway, but still... >_<
BTW, I know I'm going to buy it at some point, but I'll pay the reserve in full tomorrow if this game has online support... :d
gweazel619 @ Nov 6th 2008 2:09PM
ZERO chance of me not picking this up.
Kevlar @ Nov 6th 2008 3:26PM
Same. There is NO chance that I'd consider ever not going to excruciating lengths just so someone reads this sentence and thinks "WTF?".
But yea, confusing double negatives abound.
I'm definitely NOT going to avoid this package on launch day.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 6th 2008 2:11PM
Revenge of Shinobi and Shadow Dancer are the only ones I'm interested in. Of course they're not on here, PSN, XBLA, Virtual Console, etc...
Andy Hughes @ Nov 6th 2008 2:17PM
Agreed. Why Shadow Dancer didn't make the list but Dr. Robotnik's MBM did is a complete travesty.
Mogster @ Nov 6th 2008 3:03PM
Those are the only ones you'd be interested in? What a fool...
Smoke_Dawg_187 @ Nov 6th 2008 3:01PM
I want Revenge of Shinobi as well. I loved that game. Especially the original with Batman, Spider-man, and Godzilla.
McWeen @ Nov 6th 2008 2:12PM
This is kind of a big middle finger to the Virtual Consoles pricing.
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Nov 6th 2008 2:37PM
The previously existing compilations (Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Gems Collection, Megaman Anniversary Collection, Metal Slug Anthology, etc.) were all giant middle fingers to Virtual Console.
Questworld @ Nov 6th 2008 11:15PM
Why no Wii version then? I personally don't want to get into the whole DLC trend, regardless of console. On the other hand I don't care for these games anyway. Now if I could get Bionic Commando Rearmed on a disc that'd be great.
sicsided @ Nov 6th 2008 2:14PM
years of saving and collecting and searching... all wasted, now that I can just get it all for $30. Not to mention the money :(
Draco @ Dec 31st 2008 10:06AM
tell me about it, I've spent 200$ nearly on just 3 of those games in the past 5 years.
strange girl @ Nov 6th 2008 2:19PM
waste of money.
Blank-Mage @ Nov 6th 2008 2:37PM
Your MOM'S a waste of money!
(Wow, that was really unoriginal of me.)
Chin-Poh @ Nov 6th 2008 2:38PM
You were a waste of your mom's eggs and dad's sperm. LOLZ?
Mischa @ Nov 6th 2008 3:58PM
Considering I already bought the sega genesis collection for both ps2 and PSP, I'd say yes, this would be a waste of money.
Richard Mitchell @ Nov 6th 2008 2:16PM
I can has online play?
Zertoss @ Nov 6th 2008 2:18PM
Not until you learn proper grammar.
Markez @ Nov 6th 2008 2:19PM
Doubt it. I suppose that's the sacrifice of having these all on disc as opposed to XBLA/PSN.
God I hope they throw in Eternal Champions. Great stage based fatalities :P
Kamizar @ Nov 6th 2008 2:19PM
That doesn't make sense Zertoss, no one online uses proper grammar...
Zertoss @ Nov 6th 2008 2:22PM
Kamizar, I know, I just hate that "I can has cheeseburger?" garbage.
DCBlack @ Nov 6th 2008 3:13PM
DLC at least would be nice, though I'm not sure what they would add.
Impressive list, definitely picking this up.
Shagittarius @ Nov 6th 2008 5:06PM

Kamizar @ Nov 6th 2008 2:17PM
Spinball, fucking yes...
Vidikron @ Nov 6th 2008 2:18PM
Wow... a compilation that's actually worth the money. That's a seriously good collection.
Trance Addix @ Nov 6th 2008 2:19PM
Orgasm...I cannot wait!
Does shit have achievements? :D
dark_inchworm @ Nov 6th 2008 2:22PM
Achievement unlocked!
Clean Flush - 5G - No cave paintings left in the bowl.
Markez @ Nov 6th 2008 2:25PM
You know, this will only be the 2nd time I've said this. The first was after a 'wheres the beef' comment, to which someone responded 'in your wifes pants'. But I think it's appropriate here as well...
WHOA
Park Zero @ Nov 6th 2008 2:19PM
Man, I wish there was some kind of service out there that I could pay for and download only the games that I want. Maybe some kind of “arcade” on my xbox where I could download games like these.
Vidikron @ Nov 6th 2008 2:25PM
Still hard to complain about $30 for 40 games though. They would all likely be $5 on XBLA, which would get you 6 games for the same price as getting all 40 in this collection.
Duke @ Nov 6th 2008 3:10PM
Yeah, I think you missed the whole amazing deal aspect of this collection. This is a much smarter buy.
DangerMouse @ Nov 6th 2008 3:15PM
^ 30 bucks for 40 games is a good deal (especially compared to the bullshit prices that VC sells at), but i'd rather pick out each one for 3-5 dollars. Plus, i'd rather not have to dick around with another disc if it's not necessary, and go through their cumbersome menus, intro screens and all that other crap. But I wouldn't be surprised if Sega is binded to a contract with Nintendo for digital distribution of genesis games.
What sega and sony/microsoft need to do is get together and release Saturn and Dreamcast classics, like the PSOne has. That would fucking rock.
Park Zero @ Nov 6th 2008 3:22PM
If they were all available for download at 5$ each I would spend 15$.
Vidikron @ Nov 6th 2008 3:59PM
I'm sure some people have no desire for 6 or more of those games, but it's still a great value for a lot of people. And if all 40 were on XBLA you likely be waiting a long, long time to buy those 3 you want. I'm sure part of the reason for doing a collection like this is to avoid all the extra hassles of making individual XBLA releases.
DangerMouse @ Nov 6th 2008 2:22PM
I would rather buy them individually from the online store. I'm tired of having to handle compilation game discs. Also, from the screens i've seen, it looks like they applied a 2xsal or eagle type filter. I hope they give the user some options to adjust them.
Markez @ Nov 6th 2008 2:23PM
WHAT ABOUT SONIC CD!? I ALWAYS HAVE TO LISTEN TO PEOPLE PINE ABOUT HOW IT WAS THE BEST, YET THEY NEVER THROW IT OUT ON GOOD STUFF LIKE THIS ARGHGHG
