But how does it work? Will the games themselves have to support this, or is it more that it just extends the range of the PSP's local capabilities to a much wider range?

If it's the former, then you can't play older games with it, and that's sad.

Final Fantasy Tactics and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Ad-hoc modes works fine for me. Only FFT is little hard to setup up.

If PS3 prices get low enough I just might get one for this and as a Blu Ray player. I was always disappointed with the number of good online titles on the PSP.

Hopefully this will work with ps1 games that have a multiplayer component to them such as MK3. Anyone know if you can use ad hoc party with remote play? Anyone know how to use the multiplayer parts of multiplayer ps1 titles on the psp?

To the best of my knowledge the MP parts of the original PS games available were never meant to work.

It says so right there on the info screen on the PS store.

I doubt that this app for the PS3 would change that.

eh this means nothing to me as i dont plan on getting a ps3. wish this site would post about things other then firmware, ps store updates and final fantasy. i rember when they would talk about products you could buy or apps worth downloading. now its mostly which games are on sale or whats going on in japan land.

Well...we happen to own a handheld whose North American support is weak at best. Take a look at the release calendar...not much to see that is 'western'.
Can't write about what doesn't exist.

Sad, but true.

I do wish Sony would stop trying to use the PSP to sell PS3's, though. It's a little bit insulting to buy a 200$ thing, a few games, and then be told that it could all be so much better if only you bought another expensive thing. Ugh. I'm sure PS3 owners may also feel the same way about the PSP.

I wonder which company treats it's clients worse. Sony trying to sell more PS3s using success of PSP or Nintendo making a handheld aimed mainly for casual gamers and kids changing their biggest franchises like Zelda PH and NSMB into casual friendly, that is too boring and disapointing for normal gamers, then when PSP starts selling better announcing games for hardcore players stating that they care for them now.

I'm not a fanboy of Sony, I just want to notice that every company tries to suck as much money from their clients as they can.

will this work if your ps3 is on wi-fi? Or does it have to be a wired connection? I keep getting a message that says something about LAN.

Your PS3 has to be directly cable connected using the LAN port on your PS3. The Wi-Fi connection will be used by the PSP.

BTW, 20GB Models which don't have a Wi-Fi capability, aren't compatible with this Adhoc Party Service.
