Year to date sales not significantly affected by a price cut that happened a couple months ago, during the summer sales lull?

Shocking. Truly shocking. Fire James Ransom-Wiley.

More like: "That's a whole lotta process magenta!"

I have no idea why I decided to look it up. I think I'm just bored at work.

You seem to be confused, James. The numbers say that PS3 has outsold XBox 360 in Europe for all of 2008, but that XBox 360 has outsold PS3 since the price cut came out.

Those two facts are not contradictory.

Even better question how the fuck did PS3 outsell 360 in UK in 2007 when the thing came out costing £425/$850...

In addition, if you read MS's press release carefully you'll have noticed that after the price cut, 360 is outselling PS3 in the UK - but they didn't make that claim about the rest of Europe, nor about the total of Europe including UK.

That said, I'm not sure whether these graphs are really all-Europe or just UK either... but either way, there's definitely no conflict between the claims.

I Hate graphs like this, can't they use a normal clustered column instead so we can see exactly how good each are?

I'm at a loss to describe how incredibly awesome it is that you looked up the color magenta on wikipedia.

"The name magenta comes from the dye magenta, commonly called fuchsine, discovered shortly after the 1859 Battle of Magenta near Magenta, Italy."

"In the Munsell color system, magenta is called red-purple. In the CMYK color model used in printing, it is one of the primary colors of ink. In the RGB color model, the secondary color created by mixing the red and blue primaries is called magenta or fuchsia, though this color differs in hue from printer’s magenta."

by the way, does it seem like no one cares about this news? nothing against Sire Ransom-Wiley, but ... i don't know, this is like non-news.

"'Electric' magenta and fuchsia are exactly the same color. Sometimes electric magenta is called electronic magenta. The color fuchsia is named after the color of the flowers of the Fuchsia plant, named after Leonhart Fuchs, although most of the flowers of the plant are not quite so bright."

You can learn something new from the most unlikely sources. Thank you Wikipedia.

On the bright side it seems like 2008 is a much better year that 07 for this gen consoles.

Don't you still want to call them "next gen"? It just doesn't seem like they've reached that "current gen" level of adoption yet. And it's not like there's clearly better technology on the horizon, either...

Nintendo's cleaning everyone's clock left and right, yet people still debate the measly differences between PS3 and 360 sales?

Gamers like to talk about legitimate gaming consoles which is why they debate ps3 and 360 shit all the time. When wii developers and nintendo decide to actually release good games for it maybe they'll get gamers talking about it.

There is no debate: Nintendo kicked ass

However, Sony and Microsoft's final performance is still up for debate. This is why we debate them

Just like how we followed GameCube vs Xbox last time around, probably the closest matchup in worldwide sales in history, while the PS2 was above the fray, as the Wii is now

the McDonalds comparison i dont understand...

mcdonalds is a fast food restaurant.
steak houses are fine dining restaurants.

the wii, 360, and ps3 are all game consoles.
there fore they would all be fast food restaurants.

the analogy should have been mcdonalds sells more than burger king and taco bell.

the wii is not that bad to get a comparison like that...

lol

It's a funny thing, despite that laughably bad E3 presentation, there are no real memes that stick in the consciousness, like the infamous Sony 06

There is Ravi, but if it has to be expressed in video form, its not easy enough to remember

Their whole show should qualify as a meme, but if you want specifics well there's Ravi, the soccer mom, and the rest of the cronies embarrassing themselves playing wii music onstage.

Let's not forget right after the show with Reggie chipping in with the memorable quote on why hardcore gamers are upset when they have animal crossing and gta ds.

Still not as memorable as the immortal worlds of Iwata-san from 5 years ago "Consumers do not want online play."

Well I guess it could be considered good news that the PS2 is beginning to decline in sales. I see it that way because now Sony can start putting PS2 games up for grabs on the Playstation Store... I still want MGS1 here in America.

You guys remember that library of games that no other generation has come close to matching... right?

I think Nintendo's success is because Nintendo is the only one producing top-tier games for kids. The 360 and PS3 are mostly multi-platform shovel-ware in the kids category, like the sh*tty licensed Wall-E game.

It's no wonder Microsoft has bundled Kung-Fu Panda with the 360. They are trying to say "we have kids games too". But Microsoft has only published three exclusive kids games for the 360 in four Christmases (counting the one coming). That's not even one quality kids game per year! If a parent buys a 360 for little Johnny this Christmas, there's no guarantee they'll be any decent game to but under the Christmas tree next year. Meanwhile, Nintendo is offering a steady stream of exclusive kids games (mostly Mario), and they've all been pretty decent and fun for kids.

evan- everything marketed directly to kids seems to always sell better in any business. clothes, music, movies.
then the adults follow suit.
so you might be right there with the family/kids nintendo agenda.

most ps3 and 360 games are mature rated, and harder to play in general and are not really suited to most casual gamers.

mko- mario has always been a kids game. sorry.
