Madden tramples Wii Fit in Q3 global sales
The Top Global Markets sales data from NPD, Chart-Track and Enterbrain (via GameDaily) reveals that Madden NFL 09 blitzed the global charts to become the best selling game in the third quarter of '08 (that's July to September). Trailing Madden were Wii Fit and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Also, showing that the franchise still has some Pikachu-charged power behind it, Pokémon Platinum battled in fourth place with 1.4 million units sold, despite being only available in Japan. Mario Kart Wii rounded out the top five.
Certainly the most interesting question about the sales figures is: Where would Wii Fit be if it was actually meeting demand? Madden's sales were (obviously) US heavy, while Wii Fit had a regional sales spread based on Wii's install base. Find the full sales figures after the break.

It took all platforms to outsell the Wii only Wii Fit. That's pretty funny.
This article is sure to trigger the haters. Can't wait.
Other than that, I'm not that surprised. The Wii is going to sell pretty well across all regions. It's got something that appeals to a lot of people (and that does not seem to include the Joystiq audience) so why wouldn't it sell?

"It took all platforms to outsell the Wii only Wii Fit."
Not that the Apples to Oranges comparison of Madden and Wii Fit means much, but there is a little flaw in your boast: It ignores the fact that it took worldwide sales of the popular "Fit" to beat a sports game only the US cares about.
Reel in the pride lad; the only conclusion you should draw is that we Americans love Madden, we love it long time.
SoulBlade @ Nov 10th 2008 3:21PM
There was no boast in the statement. I just thought it was amusing.
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Nov 10th 2008 3:54PM
Go ahead and be amused. I'm not Lord Auditor of all threaddom. I just think the basis of your amusement was misplaced pride. This amused me, so I guess you've passed the mirth on.

Trample in q3, LTD it will get trampled by Wiifit.
Marty @ Nov 10th 2008 2:17PM
Looking at the figures, it kind of makes one wonder why they'd even bother releasing Madden in Japan in the first place.
tmmoore_nc @ Nov 10th 2008 2:19PM
Pokemon Platinum is on there despite only being available in one region. If they put that out in NA at the same time as Japan, Madden would be humbled.
Roto13 @ Nov 10th 2008 2:21PM
It's amazing how little the rest of the world seems to care about American football.
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Nov 10th 2008 2:37PM
It's all about Soccer, matie. You know the actual and real FOOTball...
Vcize @ Nov 10th 2008 2:51PM
Obviously it's just too awesome for the rest of the world.

funny, because soccer is SO inconsequential to Americans. i'd take a good Viking or Raider's game over soccer any day of the week. but that's just me.
as for the article, well, i guess there's a black shade in every silver cloud. Madden released on just about every system imaginable; Wii Fit released solely on the Wii...why am i defending the Wii?
SKI @ Nov 10th 2008 11:00PM
It's like in The Simpsons when soccer came to town and all the local broadcasters were bored (they were just passing to each other), but the Spanish broadcaster was having an orgasm from the amount of excitement.
Courtney @ Nov 10th 2008 2:33PM
That photochop is awesome. In a post-apocalyptic future, people will worship John Madden's giant head.

Yep, David Beckham is executed in opening scene, and Manchester United,Chelsea,Real Madrid and other European teams star as the Rebels...

Madden's personality is stored in an AI computer. His giant head provides running commentary of the fight against the rebels. The commentary is broadcast on a big screen in every single one of his temples throughout the land.
jimmygotsmack @ Nov 10th 2008 2:47PM
This isn't to surprising considering that its on multiple platforms, including the wii.
I'm just sadden that a "NEW" game can be resold every year, and be insanely profitable like madden. You would think by now the "roster updates" could be done with DLC, but in a business sense, why would want to do that.
Vcize @ Nov 10th 2008 2:53PM
Except that, while your point may have worked in '06 and '07, the newest version of Madden is far more than just a roster update, and paired up next to last year's version of the game you wouldn't even realize they're the same franchise.
jimmygotsmack @ Nov 10th 2008 3:02PM
O really?
ScottG13 @ Nov 10th 2008 2:54PM
For publishers, its always an "Us v. Them" thing. Nintendo kills everything on their own platforms. This generation might be the worst yet.
Mr.Nitemare @ Nov 10th 2008 3:56PM
the statement that madden trampled Wii fit is highly misleading... Madden across 6 platforms only outsold Wii Fit on one platform by a measly 800,000 units? lets see thats an average of 500,000 units per system, compared to 2,000,000 for one system.. lol.. actually sounds lopsided to me... not to mention Wii Fit doesn't even meet demand... and i'm not even interested in Wii Fit... i contributed to the madden end.. just stating the numberical facts
chukz @ Nov 10th 2008 7:36PM
I agree with you, and also the major reason for Madden 09 being so successful is that it was released in this period. This is the 2nd quarter that Wii Fit has been released I believe...
Basically what I'm saying is look at the next quarter and see if Madden is still selling above 2m copies, I'm guessing it won't... meanwhile Wii Fit may more than likely be there again with another 2m sold.
I'm not a Wii Fit fan, btw... I don't have it and I don't understand why so much people want it... but it's hard to ignore the sales. And as you said "Trampled" doesn't really make sense to use, Wii fit has been out twice as long... if anything this is showing the "evergreen" franchises Nintendo is talking about.

Global sales huh? Wheres the rest of Europe.
