Nega-Review: Gears of War 2

"Overall, Gears of War 2 is ... essentially the same as its predecessor." (6) "It's as if the original Gears has gotten a face-lift, and been expanded upon, without much real change." (1) "The game's opening teaser ... could have been sliced out of the original title" (4) and "the basic gameplay, with the focus on taking cover and precise re-loading, as well as the dismal gray visual design, is little changed from the first Gears." (2) "The whole freshness and aspect of 'new' that came with the first game won't really come across here." (6)
The game's "major shortcoming is a mawkish and cliche-ridden story." (2) "The characters [are] as macho and stereotypical as ever," (3) and "so uninspired you can almost predict their next response or action -- usually some variation of a grim, determined assertion of their physical prowess." (1) "Do we really have to have the shit-scared new cadet who's barely old enough to shave, the general giving a rah rah speech consisting entirely of jingoistic clichés, and the loud-mouthed hick who calls his rig Betty (and has a fetishistic love for it)?" (3) "There's barely a single character beat that isn't cringe-inducing." (2)

"The level design itself is still fundamentally linear... result[ing] in levels that don't feel particularly real." (3) "Oddly enough there are levels and portions of levels that feel like they were designed only to showcase [new] features. It keeps them from feeling a part of the core gameplay and instead they seem like accoutrements to their specialized stages and are forgotten for the rest of the game." (8) "Being funneled along by doors that don't open and streets that are magically blocked off by cars and rubble feels a little lazy, particularly when Epic is capable of more inventive solutions." (3)
"Your computer-controlled allies "are still prone to gaffes (such as a reluctance to rush to revive you)." (6) Yes, "there were... occasions where Dom refused to revive Marcus, even when we were crawling around his feet. That's not a show of battle-hardened friendship – that's just callous!" (5) "You'll occasionally see your squad mates being completely ineffectual, standing, surrounded by clawing monsters, not fighting back - or even, seemingly, taking damage. (3)

"Unfortunately, for a game as high profile as this one, there seems to have been something missed in QA." (6)
"The framerate ... does dip in one particular section when the environmental destruction is simply too much for the engine to handle. There's also the infamous texture problems that happen with UE3." (8) "Through out our play through, we had to restart at the last checkpoint no less than three times through the one play through because of glitches. Once was because our vehicle got stuck and once because Dom decide run off a platform and the game leaving us stuck." (6) "I've also seen upside down enemies in Horde, my player model sliding around (not user controlled), and shots not registering properly." (8)
Welcome, Gears and, um, Gear-ettes, to the not-yet rustlung-infected Joystiq Nega-review. As usual, we've taken the small negative points from a variety of laudatory reviews for a high-profile game and assembled them into an entirely negative whole. We do this to save humanity from extinction... er, that is to say, to provide an entertaining and easy-to-read counterpoint to the waves of laudatory hype today's blockbusters receive.
The most interesting part of assembling this Nega-review was reading the conflicting opinions on the story. While many reviewers thought it was out and out atrocious (see paragraphs 3 and 4 above), others described it as well written, emotional, engaging, etc. etc. Just goes to show you, there's no accounting for literary taste, especially among game critics.

Hmmm, a nega-review that misses all of the games biggest problems:
1) The lobby system is a chore. We get kicked alllll the way back out to the main lobby in between maps and have to go through 3 slow-loading menus to get back into a game? No more map cycle like before? Teams get randomized every map? No more ready button? Wtf?
2) Chainsaw at close range doesn't drop from getting shot anymore. Can we say 100 kinds of broken?
3) At the end of a round, the people alive no longer get joined up with the people in the dead room. That means all those cool end of round moments (and let's face it, it's been scientifically proven that 98% of cool stuff happens at the end of the round) are now 300% less awesome because you can't talk to each other afterwards. No more "oooooooooooh"s, no more "nice shot dude"s, and no more hilarious laughing.
They really missed on the social aspect of Gears 2, coming from Gears 1, which was the most socially entertaining game online in history.
Brent @ Nov 10th 2008 10:04AM
I agree...why can't all matchmaking be more like COD4? Sure, it has its hiccups, but it is fun and you don't spend a lot of time in the lobby waiting to find a game.
Averna @ Nov 10th 2008 10:16AM
Matchmaking done well is fine, but generally speaking its only good if your NA, the rest of the world gets screwed because the systems seem to think that US games are the best... even if we live on the other side of the world.
Bring back the lobbies! Viva la revolution!
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Nov 10th 2008 10:43AM
Can I say something?
*clears throat*
FUCK MATCHMAKING, FUCK LOBBIES, NEED MORE PC-LIKE SERVERS!
PS: Seriously both of them really suck and ruin half of the multiplayer experience before the game even began.
Haggard @ Nov 10th 2008 12:49PM
PC-like servers have their problems too, though I do prefer the system.
Dan CiTi @ Nov 10th 2008 2:42PM
That last sentence really killed that comment for me. Except that you're dead on.
OnToGlory @ Nov 10th 2008 3:06PM
V - I haven't experienced any of those issues at all. No getting booted, we can all talk in between rounds, even the chainsaw issue you mentioned hasn't happened to me either way.
Wierd - you make it sound like a ps3 network game ;)
Vcize @ Nov 10th 2008 3:20PM
OnToGlory, you're misunderstanding me. None of it has to do with networking, it's the way the game is designed. Let me clarify:
1) I didn't literally mean getting "booted" as in getting dropped from the game. Rather, in Gears 1, when a map ended you were immediately taken to the next map, you press start and you're going. Total time from finishing one map to be running around in the next map was about 10 seconds. In Gears 2, when a map ends, you're taken alllll the way back out to the setup lobby. Then when the host is done there, you load for about 20 seconds, and you're in the pre-game lobby. Then, when the host is done there, you load for about 20 seconds and you're FINALLY back to the spot you were at immediately in Gears 1, that is on the next map still loading it up.
2) This is well documented. Once you get within a certain range, shooting someone that has the chainsaw revved no longer drops the saw, they just run right through it. There are about one hundred bajillion posts/complaints about this over on the offical Gears forums currently.
3) Again, you're misunderstanding. If I die during a round, and you die during a round, we can talk to each other in the dead room. But if I die during a round, and you survive the round, in that 10 second span before the next round starts, we can't talk to each other (whereas in Gears 1 we could). If you had a 1v1 or 1v2 or 1v3 or even 1v4 or something in Gears 1 and got the victory, it immediately put all players into the same chat at the end of the round so you hear everyone laughing and talking about what just happened. In Gears 2, since you're the only one that survived, you can't talk to anyone until the next round starts, at which point you can only talk to your team. You take down 4 guys to win the round and what do you hear? Crickets.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 10th 2008 3:40PM
Vcize, on that last issue about hearing crickets. That shit happened to me! I unleashed PURE PPPPWNAGE on my friends yet, I didn't get to feel the full extent of the sweet sweet victory as I would have if I coulda talked CRAZY amounts of shit about said PPPPWNAGE. :( I still did it at the end of teh match but it just wasn't fulfilling enough. :P

"The game's "major shortcoming is a mawkish and cliche-ridden story." (2) "The characters [are] as macho and stereotypical as ever,""
Although I agree that the story is ridiculously cliché and uninspired, I don't think it should really be called a shortcoming for a game like Gears....were there really people playing for a deep involving story? I always found it funny before launch when people like Cliffy were going on about how the story was going to be dark and emotional. Rest of the stuff makes sense definitely, it does seem like a lot of minor glitches got through that also appeared in the original. I must have missed the slow down though....
umm....hello??? @ Nov 10th 2008 9:29AM
exactly...I found the story engaging, but it was never cringe-inducing, more just outright funny to listen to.
Jon2309 @ Nov 10th 2008 11:09AM
Missed the slowdown?
Count yourself lucky, mine is sometimes so slow, that none of the textures load. That includes text, so I can't see wtf I'm doing. Really nasty.
Mr Khan @ Nov 10th 2008 11:07AM
I've found that it doesn't matter what the artists' message is anymore, the critics will pick it apart based on some sort of impossible standard
Then still give it a 10/10
Brandon @ Nov 10th 2008 9:12AM
So far my biggest problem was when Dom first lost the lead on Maria, the actor was apparently having a bad day, it just wasn't believable.
freedomfromconformity @ Nov 10th 2008 11:50AM
Hahaha, yeah that part was so weak. It stands out so much that it's just plain awkward. Not really playing it for the acting, though. It's the equivalent of the Arnold movies "Commando" or "Predator." The actors are all burly dudes who like to blow up s**t and come across some strange force. It's just cheap, gory fun.
Avarice @ Nov 10th 2008 9:14AM
My biggest disappointment was the lack of a new Cole Train rap in the credits. Boo!!!

It needs updated thats for sure. My biggest gripe is the shotty changed too much. :( I want a *Execution only* playlist. Ive only played a little online though. My internets is broken and my fake ass internet co (ATT Yahoo) is taking their sweet time to come fix my shit! Its getting me pissed enough to call Comcast and get cable internet.
Now as for the campaign...
IT IS A MASTERPIECE!!!! GOTY for me! Right now I give the game a 9.5 because of some small things that can be fixed with some updates and I have no doubt those concerns will be addressed.
ExMcCloud @ Nov 10th 2008 9:58AM
Yeah man that sux....I wnted to play some campain with u my friend...Guess I gotta wait...And that last Chapter is fuckin SICK! Way better than Resistance 2 last chapter/ending....That shit pissed me off...I wont spoil it BUT Fuckin Insomniac is following this new trend in Sony main characters.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 10th 2008 10:04AM
Yeah man, I can connect but then my modem loses signal after 2 to 3 minutes. :( I *thought* it was fixed because it worked just fine for about 3 to 4 hours on Sat night but then I lost signal again. ATT sais my lines are crossed but they dont show up to fix my shit.
KingOfGods @ Nov 10th 2008 10:32AM
Cable modem is the way to go. DSL has always been too fragile and unreliable for me.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 10th 2008 10:45AM

I like the series and the first game enough to spend $140 on a ginat plastic lancer. So, anyone calling me a hater or a fanboy is sorely mistaken. There are games where I will also defend like Fenix and McCloud are this one - Little Big Planet for instance. But, lets all try to have an actual discussion instead of taking the criticism's to heart and turning it into a personal attack.
No need to bring other games like Resistance 2 or MGS 4 into the discussion just to play tit for tat. That's just being a "console warrior" and trolling.
Do I think Gears 2 should win Game Of The Year? No. Would I be up in arms if it did win GOTY? No. There are probably no less than 10 games that I would have no problem with winning GOTY. If you loved Gears 1 then you will undoubtedly love Gears 2 because it is more of the same. Most of the changes seem for the better while other seems for the worse.
There will never be a game that releases and everyone on the planet likes it. It's simply not possible to appeal to every single person out there. But it's also not like everyone who has a complaint of dislikes Gears 2 has a hidden agenda or is trolling.
I prefer RPG elements to be in my games so for me Fallout 3 and Valkyria chronicles are more enjoyable than Gears 2. I even prefer the class system and different classes in Resistance 2 to Gears 2. It doesn't make Gears 2 a bad game - it's just a preference.
For me Gears 2 is like Army Of Two - a game that I loved. It's got a pretty shallow campaign that is really just filler. The real fun comes in the multiplayer & co-op experience. For me Horde mode would be worth the price of admission if it were the only multiplayer mode. The game is a really great experience but lets not try to make it something it is not - let's not buy into the marketing hype.
For a strictly multiplayer experience you would be hard pressed to find any game out there that is better. The single player still falls short though it does allot of thing right and is epic in scope. The presentation is just not there and the game still needs some polish. But just the multiplayer alone and the vast amounts of different game modes really makes this game have more staying power than the other big #4 iterations that released this year.
I would say that in time most if not all of the issues will be fixed via an update. While most hardcore gamers lost interest in games after a month or two I can see Gears 2 being played allot in a year from now.
Epic did a commendable job and really upped the ante this time around. For me it wasn't enough in the campaign mode and there are still some serious issues I have with the changes in Multiplayer. But in the end I can say that this is and will remain the reason to own a 360 & Live. If I had to give the game score based on what I have played so far i woudl have to give somewhere around an 88 or a 90.
Possible Games Of The Year According To John
(no order)
GTA IV
MGS 4
LBP
SSBB
Gears 2
Fallout 3
Dead Space
Far Cry 2
Rock Band 2
Ninja Gaiden 2
My personal GOTY is Little Big Planet. It also happens to be my current favorite game of all time dethroaning Tecmos Deception. For me it's like playing Super mario Brothers for the first time again. It captured that same magical and wymsical feeling. But that's just my opinion. At the same time I would have no problem with any of the games I mentioned and plenty of other games I did not mention winning GOTY. IMO it has been the best year in the history of gaming for all the great games that have been and are still going to be released. Just shows you how spoiled we are as gamers.
If Gears 2 won GOTY from every major magazine and industry source I would probably be like - "cool! It is a really good game and is well deserving"
Darth_Ends @ Nov 10th 2008 9:19AM
On rail sections bad. Matchmaking bad.
Horde, amazingly awesome.
Scott Brooks @ Nov 10th 2008 9:22AM
"The game has what seems to be a disappointing lack of polish, what with the minor glitches that have crept in."
An excellent point. After playing multiplayer for a while last night watching some of the executions is just painfully hard. Sometimes I would roll someone over for the punches to the face and they wouldn't even be under me when the punches rained down. I would be punching bloody ground with the body laying 5 feet away. The same thing happens with other executions too and while it doesn't take anything away from the gameplay it's just unfortunately to see. I expected this game to be flawless especially after seeing all the execution videos look amazing before launch.
SoulBlade @ Nov 10th 2008 9:24AM
You know the game is probably really good if the Stiq is posting a nega review...
Deeznuts420 @ Nov 10th 2008 9:24AM
this game is awesome and it keeps making me want to comeback for more, im not even the type of person who would play a game more than once but i would run co-op on hardcore through this game after completing it solo, thats a good sign.
samfish @ Nov 10th 2008 9:26AM
This was pretty much the only game I played this weekend.
...I didn't really like it, but I tried really hard to. C'est la vie.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 10th 2008 9:46AM
Well campaign wise you only played through the hospital level. Took all weekend for that? Honestly the campaign just keeps getting better and better with every sigle level. Horde mode is unbelivable! Eh, I guess you're right sometimes you can tell from the beginning of a game that you are just not going to be into it. I rented Resistance 2 and by the 2nd level I had enough. Its so generic, just like the first one.
Vcize @ Nov 10th 2008 10:58AM
The Hospital is basically the tutorial. Nothing even happens in there.
AwesomeTown @ Nov 10th 2008 10:59AM
Well, I didn't even play it at all this weekend. Is that bad? I am going to make it my duty to play it at least a little tonight. Damn Fallout 3 and its awesomeness has taken hold of me and won't let go.
Jimiisama @ Nov 10th 2008 3:09PM
Where are you getting the idea that he only played through the hospital? It doesn't say anywhere on the post that he only played the hospital.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 10th 2008 3:57PM
Jimiisama
He's on my friends list so I can easily see what achievements have been unlocked. Sais here, he cleared the Hospital and did the Tutorial. Thats it. But like I also said just that little part might have been enough for him not to like it. Even though the rest of the real game game gets tons ans tons better.
As Vcize said the Hospital level is really a tutorial and the real meat starts right at the beginning of the second level on the grindlifts.
samfish @ Nov 10th 2008 5:36PM
I got to the second level but I kept dying at the part where you had to either cross some bridge or fall off a cliff.
I just played multiplayer after that...and kept getting my ass kicked. I swear that in the level where it's raining I was just randomly dying...
Alas, my level of suckage at the game began to seem insurmountable, so I was particularly discouraged by that!
Sackolantern PSN ID: johnnynumber5 @ Nov 10th 2008 7:22PM

I think it's razor blade rain. Honestly.
ExMcCloud @ Nov 10th 2008 9:32AM
That campaign is a fuckin masterpiece.....Even with the cliche stor I never took it serious....It reminds me of those old action movies that are cult classics but bad movies....lmao...Great game period....GOTY
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 10th 2008 9:52AM
You're right we have to remember its a game. Story wise I loved it, going into Nexus was unbelivable. Texture pop-in, no scratch that, texture fade in ;) aside, the game is absolutely gorgeos. Best graphics ever in a videogame. The lighting the color, the detail!
"Hey Marcus what are these glowing plants?"
"What am I a fucking Botanist? Some kinda plant, I dont know."
Damn that shit made me crack up. Also, Cole is a SUPERSTAR in this game :)
ExMcCloud @ Nov 10th 2008 10:03AM
Cole has always been the SUPERSTAR....And apparently Carmine is the KENNY of his serious(Yes South Park Kenny) he has 4 brothers....lol....I like the joke Dom throws at him about the helmet....lmao....BEST GRAPHICS EVAR on a console...Killzone better get some color and a REALLY big scale to beat this(Though it does look REALLY GOOD).....Nexus is BEAUTIFUL....and the chase scene with Skorge is also BEAUTIFUL....They are really pushing the limits of the Xbox.

I've had a quick play through...its hard to call it a masterpiece!!like i'm not finished and i have heard the last few levels will blow your mind but i'm not really into the story...the gameplay is amazing but!!and some of the set pieces are crazily good but the campaign for MGS was better for me...as in the story but the gameplay for GoW is just so fun!!and the multiplayer....is well not a pile of steaming shite...I'll have to buy my own 360 and pick up this game!
ExMcCloud @ Nov 10th 2008 1:29PM

Ultimately thats all that matters to me...FUN...Im a Halo fan for goodness sakes Story means Jack shit to me...Maybe thats why Im not a RPG fan....But LBP another one of my favorite games couldnt have a story if it wanted to...lolz......But hey different people have different tastes
