Ubisoft just announced that
Far Cry 2 has achieved a million sales worldwide in under three weeks across Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Even with the holiday wallet onslaught (and
recession) in full effect, it's encouraging to see a quality title that could have slipped through the cracks compete at retail.
The
Africa-set Far Cry 2, developed by Ubisoft Montreal, has met with
solid reviews from the gaming press and our very own
Afrikaner, who greeted the news of the game's achievement with, "YES! Good job, world."

I wish I were not among the one million.
Dr. @ Nov 11th 2008 3:01PM
And I disagree completely.
I'm quite surprised it's done so well, actually. It certainly didn't have the hype advantage.
Chase @ Nov 11th 2008 3:07PM
I like Far Cry 2. :[
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 11th 2008 3:11PM
I actually got Far Cry 2 based on what you said a while ago, and I'm enjoying it.
Playing through on Infamous right now and about 11 hours in. I'm very happy with the AI and game play. Silenced pistol FTW!
Haggard @ Nov 11th 2008 3:18PM
I was trying to convince you that it was average that time, and you were like "sounds awesome!"
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 11th 2008 3:36PM
Far Cry 2 turned out to be the exact thing I wanted to play after warping up Fallout. An open-ended shooter that actually played well (as a shooter) and had good AI and animations.
The game is a little repetitive but its not bad enough to make me want to stop playing. I also learned early on that vehicles were death traps so I started walking everywhere, which actually gave me time to explore new areas and plan out attacks.
I think that the fact that the game is challenging, and that it actually forces me to seriously think about the actions that I will/am performing is what makes it interesting to me.
But then again my main weapons are a sniper rifle/silent pistol/dart gun and I'm playing on Infamous difficulty, so my experience might be very different from others.
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 11th 2008 3:38PM
*wrapping up Fallout
oh, and I gave you +1 internetz
Haggard @ Nov 11th 2008 3:40PM
You seen the ending yet?
All I'll say is that it was so bizarre and unexpected that I still don't know how to feel about it.
oolz @ Nov 11th 2008 3:40PM
opinions differ. To me, between Dead Space, Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2, Far Cry 2 is the more enjoyable, entertaining game.
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 11th 2008 3:45PM
I was looking through the trophy list and I think one of the descriptions gave away the ending.
Haggard @ Nov 11th 2008 4:23PM
Are you referring to 'The horror.. the horror..'?
It's quite a spoilerous description considering the entire premise of the game, but no, that's not the ultimate ending.
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 11th 2008 4:33PM
yea, thats the one.
I'm only 12% of the way through act 1. I've mostly been doing weapon unlocks and assassinations.
vdeogmer @ Nov 11th 2008 8:18PM
Titanium Orchid, I'm sorry, but I have to call bullshit on the AI being good. Every time, if you kill the driver of a car, the gunner will stop firing at you to take the seat of the driver you just brutally murdered.
Genius it ain't.
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 11th 2008 8:42PM
I've spend a good amount of time watching the AI at work.
Enemies will investigate an area you were known to have been in, they will fan out and search for you, and snipers do a good job of spotting at a distance. If there are enough enemies in a given location, some will work in pairs to find you. When in a direct firefight, they are pretty aggressive and do a good job of flanking.
The AI will also do a reasonable job of stalking, and use rocks and trees as cover.
I have also noticed that wounded enemies will crawl into dark or hidden areas to hide.
They are accurate, and generally use weapons at appropriate ranges and they have started to use grenades well.
The way the game treats car and boat related actions is pretty poor, but I have yet to see and game that has been able to handle vehicles very well.
The AI isn't perfect but its a lot better than a lot of current FPS's
Balaamsafe @ Nov 11th 2008 2:59PM
I guess that's cool, but i realy think it deserves more. I freaking love this game. GOTY in my opinion
United States of Generica @ Nov 11th 2008 7:33PM
I agree that it's pretty good fun, and it looks pretty darn good ... but I wish they would fix the WIDESCREEN problem, it makes driving harder for one thing (as well as cropping).
It took ages to fix in Bioshock, I'm hoping that that Ubisoft will get this fixed up quicker.
The Dark Wayne @ Nov 11th 2008 3:00PM
glad to see some lesser known games arent being lost among the GoW 2s and CoDs
Mr Khan @ Nov 11th 2008 4:06PM
lesser known?
You didn't see the time when FarCry 2 was the entirety of advertisements for a new episode of South Park, did you?
Honestly i've seen more ads for Far Cry than for Call of Duty, and equal amounts for Gears
The Dark Wayne @ Nov 11th 2008 4:20PM
no i don't watch southpark but that's good to hear. I was worried this wouldn't be mainstream enough
giantenemycrab @ Nov 11th 2008 3:01PM
Good! I love Far Cry 2 and I was worried people might overlook it.
NaeemTHM @ Nov 11th 2008 3:02PM
I bought Far Cry 2 Saturday along with the new Castlevania. I haven't had a chance to play it yet (because the Catlevania is damn awesome) and it's sitting unwrapped on my 360.
The reviews have been stellar and many Joystiqers enjoy the game. However I hear a lot of complaints about repetition. Should I be worried? Is Far Cry 2 worth 60 bucks?
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Nov 11th 2008 5:51PM
Depends. It can get repetitive if you just rush through it so take your time when playing.
Imo, it's worth $60 just to see and experience Africa.
DangerMouse @ Nov 11th 2008 6:22PM
I can't stand the new Castlevania. I should've bought this instead.
Dalrint @ Nov 11th 2008 3:03PM
Does reaching a million copies magically turn it into a less generic shooter?
Cause...then I'd buy it...
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Nov 11th 2008 3:09PM
Nope, I'm afraid it's still a slow-burn, open-ended shooter set in Africa. JUST like all the others.
Christopher Grant @ Nov 11th 2008 3:17PM
Ouch! How's that burnnnnn doing?
Justin McElroy @ Nov 11th 2008 3:53PM
I rarely do this for staffers, but I'm awarding Ludwig Kietzmann the Justin T. McElroy Memorial Burn of the Day Award. Use it in good health, Luddy.
Shagittarius @ Nov 11th 2008 3:56PM
Hoping if I tag along i'll get upvoted here.

in the history of joystiq has there ever been a post where every joystiq blogger has replied? or is that just crazy talk?

Most epic chain of posts EVER on anything EVER.

*burns out in a hulking wreck*
Ouch.
Dirty @ Nov 11th 2008 3:03PM
Interesting. I thought that the games industry wasnt going to do well going into the holiday. Guess I was wrong. Should be interesting to watch the numbers come it.
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 11th 2008 3:13PM
Glad to see this game isn't getting overlooked because of other releases.
I really really like it but its not GOTY. Thats still MGS4, I'm calling it now.
zaglis @ Nov 11th 2008 3:22PM
Keep supporting crap, guys!
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Nov 11th 2008 3:42PM
Alright, I voted up your comment.

Read between the lines, Graham.

doh! got it now.
FORK!! me can't eat soup!
Misframed @ Nov 11th 2008 3:22PM
I really want to play this but I'm knee deep in Fable 2, just getting going in Fallout 3 and now broke or so my wife says (laugh it up single folks)... That said, I'm glad I have Gamefly....
Burritoclock @ Nov 11th 2008 3:28PM
It's a good game. I only have two complaints.
1: Driving is a pain because every 2 and half seconds you are attacked by suicidal Africans that apparently lay in wait for a car with anything close to a white man with malaria in it.
2: I have a sniper rifle, I shoot a man in the leg like the videos showed, but instead of him limping or getting help from his buddies he either dies or doesn't react at all.
Still a good game though.
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 11th 2008 3:43PM
Some times the dude will limp away and then sit in a corner (like the last stand perk in COD4) and wait for you to come by. Other times, his buddy may help him.
I've also shot people in the leg just to see what would happens. Some times they die, other times they walk away. I don't know for sure what triggers that animation.
I think distance has a lot to do with how much damage a shot does.
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Nov 11th 2008 5:54PM
Yeah, I always laugh how that single guy in a fucking car always stops and chases me down despite the fact I'm in a fucking car.
Having some people that are on your side would definitely be a lot more fun. Look at STALKER. Other Stalkers are pretty uncommon, but don't you love meeting one and getting this fuzzy feeling when you can be sure that this one human being won't try to shoot you in the back every
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Nov 11th 2008 5:55PM
...time he sees you.
What is up with me today?
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Nov 11th 2008 6:28PM
* fucking jeep with a mounted 50 cal
Seriously I need to Proof Check everything at least 3 times...
burjeffton @ Nov 11th 2008 3:30PM
The game isn't perfect - but it's solid enough to garner attention. Had it been released during the summer, it would have gotten a lot more love.
Sackolantern PSN ID: johnnynumber5 @ Nov 11th 2008 3:36PM
Another shooter that is more well rounded than Gears 2. I actually enjoy playing the Far Cry 2 campaign. It's a shame these hype machine games liek Halo and Gears get all the love when other jewels without the hype like Resistance 2 & Far Cry 2 get called generic. I would not argue that the multiplayer iterations are better in R2 or FC2 but teh campaign modes are much better and more complete. Gears is to vanilla for my tastes.
lorddshadow2 @ Nov 11th 2008 7:02PM
yeah i know! one of my friends got gears and said that resistance 2 sucks ass repeatedly. after describing the bosses and showing him a video of the leviathan in chicago, he was left speechless.
Dan CiTi @ Nov 11th 2008 3:43PM
Too bad.
rvkremer @ Nov 11th 2008 4:03PM
Glad to see this one didn't slip through the cracks, it really looks like something different in a crowded genre. No doubt it will be overlooked come the "Tostitos Presents the 2nd Annual Xtreme Awesomest Badass Blood Chainsaw Boobs Game Awards 2008", but gamers are buying, which is what matters.
Curious of the breakdown of xbox:pc:ps3 sales ratio.
