Oddworld elects ex-Brash CCO as new prez
11
Far from the dangers of Brash Entertainment, the battered publisher's former chief creative officer, Larry Shapiro, has found work serving Oddworld Inhabitants. As the studio's new president -- Sherry McKenna will remain CEO -- Shapiro has tasked himself with pushing Oddworld into "new frontiers," reports Variety. "We intend to break the model of where games are today in a unique and entertaining way," he told the site. What we think he means: Oddworld will be getting into episodic gaming a few "years" from now.
At the very least, the Citizen Siege project has finally be cleared from the queue ... and shoveled into a shallow grave. [Update: Actually, Citizen Siege is "still in development," McKenna tells GamesIndustry.biz; just not with Vanguard.] We'd just as soon settle for the old Oddworld games with a lil' spit-shine applied, thank you very much. As for his former post at Brash, Shapiro had this to say: "I wanted to make Brash the Miramax or HBO of video games, but sales marketing and finance wanted it to be Majesco." Oh, BURN!

Ha, now that is a great quote :)
But then again, Miramax and HBO are undeniably...non-interactive. The cynic in me says that these "new frontiers" are nothing but more of the usual "less gameplay, more story, dialog and cinematics" trend. Screw that. (/me goes back to MegaMan 9...)

Oh, OWI. How I've longed to see you in a headline once more. Your depressing tale is made more so by the fact you hired an executive of a company that spearheaded such classics as Jumper and Space Chimps. When I'm not mourning the circumstances of your unfortunate bow-out of game development, or lamenting the lack of your Art before Design philosophy in most major development studios, I'm dreaming about playing The Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klott. You inspired many choices I've made throughout my adolescent and adult life, for that I will be forever in your debt.
All the best,
Your #1 Fangirl - El Xo

My hopes were briefly raised that perhaps some new Oddworld game was on the horizon, but alas, no real news.

The Oddworld studio is still going?!
Where on earth are they getting their funding, and what exactly are they doing?
Their worst idea ever was taking the money hat from MS to make that Abe's game an Xbox1 exclusive, that pretty much killed the franchise.

I really think they should port Strangers Wrath to the Wii, like what was done with Okami, for the same reason that it didnt get enough attention. They didnt get nearly enough apprecation for that game, one of the best ive played to this day.
I'm worried about this 'new direction though', the only thing that saddens me more than a great franchise shutting down is a great franchise being revived to possibly bad results (NiGHTS, SONIC, ALTERED BEAST etc.)

Meh, I didn't like Stranger's Wrath. High production values, but the gameplay was pretty bland.
