Microsoft's Major Nelson reveals that Gears of War 2 sold two million copies after its emergence at retail last Friday. More than 1.5 million people signed into the game over the weekend, helping it achieve a new record for concurrent players on Xbox Live.
The Major's post doesn't distinguish if the two million figure is global or just US. Microsoft may send out a more detailed press release later touting its achievement (bleep bloop) when the West Coast goes to work. We'll update if there's any extra information.

Get 3-5 friends together and play Horde, if you haven't already. Seriously (see what I did there?), my friends and I have yet to play on Public playlists because we've been so busy taking on Horde mode on Hardcore...just beat Wave 50 last night, and we'll probably do it on Gridlock tonight since I've been hearing it's hella fun.
Note: We completed 50 Waves on Security, in case you're wondering.

I will be playing gears Saturday starting at around 3PM Eastern and not stopping until my eyes bleed.

I haven't played the multiplayer much yet, but I was a little disappointed at how short the campaign was. It took my girlfriend and from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon to polish it off on Hardcore. It was good fun though (apart from the tedious driving section - at least you can drive and shoot simultaneously this time).
The final boss is a joke, too - although since we only had to do it the once, maybe it's kind of like General Raam from the first Gears and it's randomly either incredibly difficult or ridiculously easy.

i bought the first one on a Wednesday, and beat it that Saturday, but i probably didn't put as many hours into it per day as you may have. it sounds like the second game isn't much longer. right now i just encountered my first Sires. can you tell me how much of the campaign i've completed?

@atrimus - Maybe half? Since we played through it in such a short period of time, it's hard for me to separate the order things happened in. I think you'd be on Act 3 of 5 at that point, but I could be completely wrong. Sorry I'm not much help!

oh no, that's helpful enough. i figured the game would probably be around 9 hours long, and that i'd already beaten approx 50% of it. seems like my guess was close. guess i'm gonna have to buy Gold sooner than i thought, so that i can enjoy the game's longevity with some multiplayer.

This game fucking rocks...there are no two ways around it. The SP, MP, and COOP are insanely good (see what I did there?), and with the inclusion of bots, teams don't have to be hellatiously lopsided if someone's connection drops. Major props to Epic...I usually play all decent games about once or twice a week, but this weekend I found myself waking up and turning on the ol' 360 for another go at Gears 2...not many games can make me do that, mind you.

Since I'm always playing with friends, we invented a method in Gears 1 that I think is better for dealing with uneven teams than even the bots are.
Say it's 4v3, with the COGs being the team with 4. Well, the rule is that only 3 of the COGs are allowed out of the spawn alive. You have to fight for your right to play the round. It ends up being all kinds of hilarious.
Of course, the other team has to agree not to leave the spawn until they see the popup that someone on the other team has died (only a matter of seconds since they all spawn next to each other), so they can't just go grab all the power weapons for free.
Obviously this doesn't work with the GP. But with friends, it's awesome.

Seems that the sell-through rates of high-profile games are even faster than before. 4 million in a weekend for fallout, 2 million for Gears 2
It's what happens with their marketing i suppose. The power of hype and an informed userbase

Dude, you are ridiculous with a hint of sourness. Those games right there DESERVE the hype. Some people even tout GOW2 or Fallout 3 as being the best games of THIS GEN for crying out loud! Go back to your waggle party machine little boy.

It applies to all big release including Mario kart Wii, Wii Fit & Brawl this year alone. I admit Gears 2 is a little overhyped but it is growing on me and is still hands down the best multiplayer experience. It's a little vanilla compared to say resistance 2 and Far Cry 2 in terms of character types, leveling up and weapon skills. But honestly I just play Horde mode anyway. Thats pretty much all Gears 2 is for me at this point is Horde mode. It really is a masterpiece and is alone worth the cost of the game.
Fallout 3 IMO is much better experience than Gears 2 but in a different way. Gears is kind of like the fun buddy game where as Fallout is the endless hours of epic single player gameplay.
Expect to see similar numbers for COD WAW when the sales figures drop for it. When I bought my copy for the PS3 there was a huge ass line out the door.
You have your Resistance, Gears, Far Cry & Call Of Duty hardcore fans having their beloved games drop at the same time. I love all fo them and have all of them.
Brawl sold roughly 2.8 million in week one on hype alone and Mario kart Wii moved about 2.4 million in it's first week on hype.

people have been talking about fallout 3 for many years and gears 2 for more than a year.
there was ANTICIPATION for the games release by the fans.
no so much OVERHYPE.
marketing allows for a broader audience appeal.
fallout 3 was 4 million in a few weeks right? not 3 days. and that was multi plat.
gears 2 has sold 2 million SUPPOSEDLY in 3 days on 1 console.

Know why this game OWN most other games out right now IMO>???
one word.
BOTS.
seriously the bots are pretty damn good, and their inclusion changes EVERYTHING. You want a quick MP game without asshats? Bots.
You and your buddy wanna do wingman but everyone on live blows meganuts screaming into the mic?
BOTS!!!!!
yeeeeah!

Really? REALLY? I loved the idea of bots but I'm not sure what epic has done with their A.I.
A buddy and me were playing a wingman game against insane bots on tyro station and half of them died to the train. :\ From what I saw they were alright but no-where near the "godly level" bots from UT3 that I was expecting them to be.

yeah when playing through gears 1 and resistance 1 i noticed that the resistance AI was much smarted and would really follow me and have great aim. the gears 1 AI was not as good, mainly those guys behind the turrets.
in gears 2 they have really changed the AI and they are much smarter, come at us more, have better aim and cover. etc.
really makes the game better.
