The age appropriate shit is absolutely stupid, intellectual property makes sense but saying you can't publish your level if it's for an older crowd is fucking stupid.

Shit, and this news hits right as I'm finishing up a remake of a Halo level.

You're probably safe if it doesn't contain images from Halo or the logo and is kid friendly. Tribute is okay.

Cool, I've spent a good 10 hours making the damn thing. It even has a fully functioning Warthog.

Didn't Shane Bettenhousen's (from 1up) level have a giant pixelated mario in it? I wonder what will / has become of it?

I find it kind of ironic that in the same post you call people copyright-infringing sicko and post to a copyright-infringing video clip on youtube.

You people are fucking retarded. Instead of ripping off of other people's IPs with "tributes" to other games/tv shows/whatever, why don't you try coming up with your OWN idea.

Ok here's a challenge for you:

Why don't you come up with a level that's not only original, but is also really fun to play to. And then you'll see why most gamers won't(or can't) make something original.

Oh man, nice retort. I'm sure that just crushed my argument right there. The fact is, making something that's not only original but something that's just as fun as the Gradius level or the gears of war level is for the average gamer it's near impossible(for reasons being way too time consuming or that people just aren't creative enough to make something wonderful)which is why many resort to making homages of existing ideas and games. And there's no real harm in that. Which is why it's silly for the developers to be acting this way. Why punish people for paying respects to their favorite games. And worse. Why bait people into thinking they could do this, and then suddenly turn around and say they can't?

I just don't believe some of this blind optimism some gamers have that this game is going to make every one who plays it into some type of Will Wright, capable of making levels that are new and original. And like I said before, if you're going to nonchalantly scold people about making things original, why not make a level for yourself so we can see how fun it really is?

PhilG makes a good point, but I still want to see a Dirty Dancing level.

"Nobody puts Sackboy in a corner!"

Aw, shit, I mean a...um...Die Hard level!

"Yipee-ki-yay Sackboy motherfucker!"

Here's what I don't understand: Wouldn't LBP levels that be protected protected by law in the US since they could be considered parody?

You're doing it wrong, Sony:

"Ensure that the content you share with other users is suitable for all ages - everybody has access to your level if you publish it"

Instead of eliminating everything inappropriate for kids, just divide everything up into different age groups and implement the proper controls and moderation to ensure that it works as planned.

Really, just come up with something, but never *ever* resort to censorship.

It doesn't work that way.

If Sony allows any mature rated content in Littlebigplanet, then the game will have to be rated M, and that would be a disaster, sales-wise.

As for the copyright stuff, it doesn't seem like a big deal to me (though they handled it terribly).

You can make all the Halo/Back to the Future/Star Wars inspired levels you like. Just don't CALL them Halo/Back to the Future/Star Wars, and don't use any obviously copyrighted images.

Take the "Death Egg" from Sonic 2. Pretty damn obvious reference, but no copyright infringement.

Oh yeah, I understand the copyright stuff. I was just pointing out the censorship issue.

Now, are you sure that's the way the ESRB works? Because I thought the "Game Experience May Change During Online Play" descriptor would cover "mature" user-created content, so the actual *game itself* could keep its E-rating.

I would be taking my copy back if I had bought LBP. Pretty underhanded of them (LBP and GHL:WT) to imply FREEDOM prior to release and then right after that reveal "Oh this game isn't actually as fun as we led you to believe... so sorry; but thanks for your money"

what really fucks me off about this is that when that stupid mirror's edge level (which I hate btw) was conspicuously left alone by sony when it was garnering significant amounts of attention for LBP. Screw you Sony. I'm making giant penis catapults and 4chan homages when I get in

I can see it now... the "If fun didn't matter..." ads start becoming reduced to a Jeff Foxworthy-esque punchline.

"If fun didn't matter, there'd be no need for an EULA!"

Enabling a simple "Friends Only" tag would solve every mature content/copyright issue in one fell swoop.

It's so simple, they'll never do it.

I havent touched this game since they pulled that copyright crap. It's just not as fun anymore, to be honest. Yeah, some levels are "fun". But the online spoofs was where that game got really good.
