How certain are we that Square Enix's current, cryptic countdown will lead to the unveiling of a new RPG? Oh, positive. The latest issue of Japanese mag Shonen Jump (via Gamekyo) has the scoop on Blood of Bahamut, a new DS game that tasks up to four local players with defending their architecturally weird city from attack. Note to prospective city planners: Erecting buildings on the back of a gigantic creature, while aesthetically impressive, generally gives rise to more serious problems. You definitely don't want to be around when your foundation decides to get an aggressive massage.
Expect to hear more on the game, including the possibility of US release, sometime after the aforementioned countdown reaches zero.
[Thanks, Ferny]

I was hoping this was a new Bahamut Lagoon, to be honest.
I guess it's kind of similar.

If the game is anywhere near as cool as that image, I will definitely be getting myself a DS.
If I haven't already for Chrono Trigger.

Two blurry screenshots, but it looks good.
And jordan, before judging a DS game, you should see how they look directly on the DS screen. Just play some of the Square Enix games on the DS and you can see of what are they capable to do...

I've given Squeenix so many chances over the past decade or so, and they just keep letting me down.
I think I'll just hold out for Mario and Luigi RPG 3 to fill my DS roleplaying need (oh, and Chrono Trigger, I guess...but it's certainly not breaking any new ground.)

differences in opinion, i suppose. my handheld has always played 2nd fiddle to my console, but i've never been shy about appreciating good games for it
But this is me, the one who's slowly getting frustrated by the state of so-called hardcore gamers. Jaded elitism is prevailing in sickening quantities

Wow calling someone a virgin on a video game site. You clearly have no idea how ironic that is.

Hey, Sonic: Dark Brotherhood is the best Sonic game since the Dreamcast. That, and you mess with J-anything and you face my mostly passive wrath. Let's agree to disagree, fool!

By the screens, it looks like a co-op RPG game, kinda like Crystal Chronicles series or Dragon Quest IX.
I hope they also add WiFi co-op with voice chat just like DQIX, and not just local multiplayer.

My friend and i were just talking about this and i said to him "i bet its a DS game". Pretty sad, as this looked like it could have been a promising PS3/Xbox 360 game and no i don't have anything against my DS, i just think its about time we had an AAA rpg from Squareenix instead of average stuff they seem to have put out as of late. Not really a surprise Squareenix is going after the money ticket though.

I think the DS is the reason the Wii doesn't have a whole lot of 3rd party support for core gamers at the moment.
Why would they waste their time with it when they can make a bajillion dollors off the insane DS sales?

The scope of hardcore gamers' tastes seems to be narrowing, if anything. Like the sudden consensus that Zelda and Mario aren't "hardcore" anything on a portable isn't "hardcore"
It's going to be fun watching companies try to satisfy from this point forward, that's for sure

Screw the DS, already...
I understand that the development cost is much cheaper when making a DS game than a proper console release. I understand that everyone in Japan has 1 DS for each hand and foot by now (probably all different iterations, too). What I don't understand is why I'm supposed to enjoy an RPG like this on the go.
I wake up, go to work, go home and play games. The subway ride to/from work takes all of 15 minutes. Even if I had a commute as long as an hour each way, I don't like the idea of playing an hour here and an hour there for an RPG. How am I supposed to be immersed without play sessions of more than an hour or so at a time.
And don't tell me I'm supposed to get home, sit in front of my HDTV and consoles and hold a DS up to play for hours on a small screen. Make this kind of game available as a virtual console download or put it on PSN/XBLA... porting it could not be that difficult. Heck, go ahead and strip out all the stupid stylus/mic interactions. I want games, not gimmicks.

I agree that it is kind of a let down, I hoped it would be pretty epic like the picture. But it still might be a good game, and the more games the merrier. I don't mind that it is a DS game anyway, Square-Enix is giving us plenty of console love with Last Remnant, Star Ocean 4, and whenever the hell FFXII and Versus come out in a few years. Well, I guess it is enough for me anyway. Some of you guys are hard to please.

But they try.

Well, I've had plenty of good RPGs on my DS, (and the GBA slot it comes with,) so I hold my tongue. (None of them had visuals anywhere near THAT, though. Methinks I'm in for some proportionately deformed protagonists.)

The amount of "omg no grafix" crap is insane. Next thing you'll hear people be like "omg chrono trigger is colourful and 2D... its teh casual suckage".
Geez, this game could probably be one of the best games ever. Leave it alone until you have more evidence to base your stupid claimes on.
And other Square DS games have been awesome. The World Ends With You is my favourite RPG and a lot of other people love it, it's got really high reviews. And guess what? It's 2D and colourful.

Well, at least the "New IP" complaint should quiet down as SE put out quite a few over the last two years. I do think the DS is scooping up all of the Nintendo's JRPG and WRPG market however. Put some of this stuff on the Wii already!!
