Square Enix donating 'Blood of Bahamut' to DS
How certain are we that Square Enix's current, cryptic countdown will lead to the unveiling of a new RPG? Oh, positive. The latest issue of Japanese mag Shonen Jump (via Gamekyo) has the scoop on Blood of Bahamut, a new DS game that tasks up to four local players with defending their architecturally weird city from attack. Note to prospective city planners: Erecting buildings on the back of a gigantic creature, while aesthetically impressive, generally gives rise to more serious problems. You definitely don't want to be around when your foundation decides to get an aggressive massage.
Expect to hear more on the game, including the possibility of US release, sometime after the aforementioned countdown reaches zero.
[Thanks, Ferny]

Apparently the World isnt going to End with You without dragging poor Bahamut down with it...
Nter @ Nov 13th 2008 12:00PM
That was horrible..
Blank-Mage @ Nov 13th 2008 1:17PM
Horribly AWESOME!
CJC @ Nov 13th 2008 10:15AM
I was hoping this was a new Bahamut Lagoon, to be honest.
I guess it's kind of similar.
Ranus Studios @ Nov 13th 2008 10:16AM
If the game is anywhere near as cool as that image, I will definitely be getting myself a DS.
If I haven't already for Chrono Trigger.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 13th 2008 10:19AM
It's on the ds...don't expect it to look anything like that
Fernando Rocker @ Nov 13th 2008 10:23AM
Two blurry screenshots, but it looks good.
And jordan, before judging a DS game, you should see how they look directly on the DS screen. Just play some of the Square Enix games on the DS and you can see of what are they capable to do...

tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 13th 2008 10:25AM
I had a ds and trust me I know what it can do...not much. I also saw screens of that new sonic rpg in the last egm and it damn near made my eyes bleed.
Fernando Rocker @ Nov 13th 2008 10:27AM
Well... you are missing a lot of excellent DS games. Specially RPG's.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 13th 2008 10:32AM
I've given Squeenix so many chances over the past decade or so, and they just keep letting me down.
I think I'll just hold out for Mario and Luigi RPG 3 to fill my DS roleplaying need (oh, and Chrono Trigger, I guess...but it's certainly not breaking any new ground.)
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 13th 2008 10:47AM
They're all jrpg's so no I'm not missing much.
Mr Khan @ Nov 13th 2008 12:05PM
differences in opinion, i suppose. my handheld has always played 2nd fiddle to my console, but i've never been shy about appreciating good games for it
But this is me, the one who's slowly getting frustrated by the state of so-called hardcore gamers. Jaded elitism is prevailing in sickening quantities
FrankDrebin @ Nov 13th 2008 12:44PM
why do people still reply tmacairjordan87? Maybe If everyone just ignore him, he might go out and lose his virginity.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 13th 2008 1:16PM
Wow calling someone a virgin on a video game site. You clearly have no idea how ironic that is.
Blank-Mage @ Nov 13th 2008 1:24PM
@tmacairjordan87
Hey, Sonic: Dark Brotherhood is the best Sonic game since the Dreamcast. That, and you mess with J-anything and you face my mostly passive wrath. Let's agree to disagree, fool!
baby sea tuna @ Nov 13th 2008 10:20AM
I always thought Bahamut was a dragon.
Donald @ Nov 13th 2008 10:59AM
I thought he was a dragon-man!
baby sea tuna @ Nov 13th 2008 11:07AM
With a whole, wide world in his dragon-hand!
PSN: HinchyFC @ Nov 13th 2008 12:10PM
@Donald:
I guess he was just a dragon.
...
...BUT HE WAS STILL TROGDOOOOO-- err, I mean, BAAAHAAAMUUUUUUUTTTT!!!!
Dirty @ Nov 13th 2008 10:22AM
Fernando was all over this.
Wish there were more RPGs on the PSP instead.
Daniel @ Nov 13th 2008 11:29AM
There are literally tons of JRPGs for the PSP
Fernando Rocker @ Nov 13th 2008 10:26AM
By the screens, it looks like a co-op RPG game, kinda like Crystal Chronicles series or Dragon Quest IX.
I hope they also add WiFi co-op with voice chat just like DQIX, and not just local multiplayer.
Christopher Schreck @ Nov 13th 2008 10:34AM
Damn it! Screw the DS. I thought this was going to be something cool.
bm @ Nov 13th 2008 1:45PM
WAHHH WAHHHHH WAHHHHHHH
What's this I hear? It must be the WAAAHHHHmbulance!
Sucks to be you.
Procris @ Nov 13th 2008 10:38AM
My friend and i were just talking about this and i said to him "i bet its a DS game". Pretty sad, as this looked like it could have been a promising PS3/Xbox 360 game and no i don't have anything against my DS, i just think its about time we had an AAA rpg from Squareenix instead of average stuff they seem to have put out as of late. Not really a surprise Squareenix is going after the money ticket though.
bm @ Nov 13th 2008 1:47PM
Next time we get two blurry screenshots for another new game, I'll call you to find out if it's gonna be any good or not. Because apparently you're a fucking fortune teller.
Negativecool @ Nov 13th 2008 10:45AM
I think the DS is the reason the Wii doesn't have a whole lot of 3rd party support for core gamers at the moment.
Why would they waste their time with it when they can make a bajillion dollors off the insane DS sales?
jorojoserojas @ Nov 13th 2008 12:50PM
I never thought about that, but you may have a point.
dark_inchworm @ Nov 13th 2008 10:46AM
What if Bahamut is gay? Nintendo might be forced to turn it down.
Geist @ Nov 13th 2008 11:42AM
Two words: Captain Rainbow.
dark_inchworm @ Nov 13th 2008 2:23PM
I'm man enough to admit that you completely fucking owned me.
Zertoss @ Nov 13th 2008 10:53AM
I don't see why people have to be negative about this.
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Nov 13th 2008 11:13AM
They should be positive.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Nov 13th 2008 11:38AM
Agreed. If it's a good game, I might pick this up.
Zertoss @ Nov 13th 2008 11:55AM
Quite a few clots whining about it being a DS game.
Mr Khan @ Nov 13th 2008 12:07PM
The scope of hardcore gamers' tastes seems to be narrowing, if anything. Like the sudden consensus that Zelda and Mario aren't "hardcore" anything on a portable isn't "hardcore"
It's going to be fun watching companies try to satisfy from this point forward, that's for sure
Zertoss @ Nov 13th 2008 12:14PM
Seriously. Gaming is thicker than water.
Emophia @ Nov 13th 2008 12:35PM
If it was anything else I wouldn;t mind.
But if this game was on teh 360/PS3 with that huge ass monster thing, they could have done something like totally awesome with like scale and stuff, like Shadow of the Colossus...
But it's just a DS Game...
Negativecool @ Nov 13th 2008 1:47PM
Did someone say my name?
Taco_Hell @ Nov 13th 2008 3:00PM
What I don't understand is why people are bitching and moaning about it being on the DS, last time I checked the DS is a pretty good hand held system. I guess I'm one of the few who still likes playing DS and occasionally PSP games?
reyes @ Nov 13th 2008 11:07AM
Screw the DS, already...
I understand that the development cost is much cheaper when making a DS game than a proper console release. I understand that everyone in Japan has 1 DS for each hand and foot by now (probably all different iterations, too). What I don't understand is why I'm supposed to enjoy an RPG like this on the go.
I wake up, go to work, go home and play games. The subway ride to/from work takes all of 15 minutes. Even if I had a commute as long as an hour each way, I don't like the idea of playing an hour here and an hour there for an RPG. How am I supposed to be immersed without play sessions of more than an hour or so at a time.
And don't tell me I'm supposed to get home, sit in front of my HDTV and consoles and hold a DS up to play for hours on a small screen. Make this kind of game available as a virtual console download or put it on PSN/XBLA... porting it could not be that difficult. Heck, go ahead and strip out all the stupid stylus/mic interactions. I want games, not gimmicks.

Vidikron @ Nov 13th 2008 11:14AM
Kind of a let down. Give the countdown and awesome picture I was hoping for something a bit more epic/grand than a DS game.
AwesomeTown @ Nov 13th 2008 12:17PM
I agree that it is kind of a let down, I hoped it would be pretty epic like the picture. But it still might be a good game, and the more games the merrier. I don't mind that it is a DS game anyway, Square-Enix is giving us plenty of console love with Last Remnant, Star Ocean 4, and whenever the hell FFXII and Versus come out in a few years. Well, I guess it is enough for me anyway. Some of you guys are hard to please.
Lycius @ Nov 16th 2008 4:31PM
Well, you know what gamers are like. When they're on a rant, they're indestructible. No-one can stop them.
But they try.
;___;
Blank-Mage @ Nov 13th 2008 1:27PM
Well, I've had plenty of good RPGs on my DS, (and the GBA slot it comes with,) so I hold my tongue. (None of them had visuals anywhere near THAT, though. Methinks I'm in for some proportionately deformed protagonists.)
Superstar90 @ Nov 13th 2008 4:03PM
The amount of "omg no grafix" crap is insane. Next thing you'll hear people be like "omg chrono trigger is colourful and 2D... its teh casual suckage".
Geez, this game could probably be one of the best games ever. Leave it alone until you have more evidence to base your stupid claimes on.
And other Square DS games have been awesome. The World Ends With You is my favourite RPG and a lot of other people love it, it's got really high reviews. And guess what? It's 2D and colourful.
Bluebreaker @ Nov 13th 2008 4:41PM
Well, at least the "New IP" complaint should quiet down as SE put out quite a few over the last two years. I do think the DS is scooping up all of the Nintendo's JRPG and WRPG market however. Put some of this stuff on the Wii already!!
hvnlysoldr @ Nov 13th 2008 8:47PM
Fighting atop giant summons of the FF universe sounds awesome. Though fighting as them...
