Industry execs foresee bright holiday despite dim economy
Oh economy, quit being such a wet blanket. You don't see video game publishers crying as they dip into their retirement accounts, do you? No sir. At least not according to Reuters, which reports the industry expects strong game sales through the remainder of this year and into 2009 in spite of the frowny faces on Wall Street.
Industry execs painted a mostly rosy outlook during yesterday's BMO Capital financial conference in New York. Overall, Microsoft exec Mindy Mount stated that she feels the game industry will "hold up a lot better than other industries," while Take Two's Strauss Zelnick admitted that such prosperity will likely only come to those companies with big titles under the tree.
Some, such as EA's Peter Moore, came away speaking words of "cautious optimism" in the face of the economic uncertainty, sentiment echoed by Nintendo's always vocal Reggie Fils-Aime. Though like a motion sensitive King Midas with a gold-encrusted stylus in one hand and a bag of money in the other, he told Reuters that while "cautiously optimistic is quite appropriate" overall, from Nintendo's ivory tower, the view is "very optimistic."

Hey, videogames are a great distraction from the current economic woes! : )

When I was laid off as a temp tester and looked for work for 4 months, I played and bought more video games than ever before in my life. Of course, that contributed to my being unemployed for 4 months...

Is being a game tester anywhere near the awesome fairy tale of ultra awesomeness portrayed in Grandma's Boy?
WilhelmThe1st @ Nov 15th 2008 4:20AM
He said 'temp tester' (as in temperature) not 'game tester.' (as in... video game)

Actually, I was a temp game tester for a couple of years. The hilarious thing is that some of the jokes from the movie rang true, like dudes sleeping at their desks, game room challenges and the lowly life of the QA team. I gave it up after two complete contracts, but it was fun times now and then.

while execs are foreseeing a good holiday season, they're also laying off people left and right to cut production teams down in size. there have been layoffs almost weekly at studios all over the place the past few months. not are all as public as say, a midway chicago cutting 20-30 people, but it's happening all over. the entertainment industry is certainly not safe in this economic downturn...

Well Nintendo and MS are going to do very well this year (given the economic climate) but Sony is going to suffer badly. EA probably wont do too badly but not awesome (they don't have a lot of AAA titles this year).

The DRM people are probably tripling their advertising.

No new DSI to the states this holiday season?? His famouse quote of "UH, I don't think we'll have enough wii's to go around this season"?? nintendo is full of it, and I had enough!!
Sorry fernando, but I feel like the nintendo fanboy is starting to act like the mindless sdf now.. Too loyal and don't mind being lied to..
Like I stated before.. I'm SO done with Mario titles.. I'm not a kid anymore. my Son has been done with them 4 years ago with the Gamecube.. he also has a 360 now..
Well, at least niintendo can sell a bunch of wiis to old folk homes... They'll make a killing!
And sorry, that's not sarcasm.
