OK, so maybe it wasn't developed by Infinity Ward, but that hasn't seemed to dull the praise for
Call of Duty: World At War. It's not quite the white-hot, face-melting love heaped upon
CoD 4, but it could very well be king of the FPS castle for this holiday season.
- Yahoo! Games (100/100): "Call of Duty: World at War is clearly one of the top games of this year, and a must have for any action gamer."
- Team Xbox (92/100): "Call of Duty: World at War was a surprisingly satisfying experience all around. Developer Treyarch really showed that they could be trusted with the keys to Dad's car, and made a game that could be compared favorably to anything Infinity Ward has done."
- OXM UK (90/100): "Maybe Call of Duty 3's harsh reception has turned out to be a good thing. Treyarch has pushed itself further than ever before and come up with a Call of Duty game that comfortably matches, and sometimes even dares to excel, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare."
- Giant Bomb (80/100): "Call of Duty: World at War is a perfectly competent game with exciting multiplayer options and a campaign that's worth playing. But in most of the ways that actually count, last year's game was better."

Am I insane, or is that a screenshot from the latest Brothers in Arms?
Regardless, I enjoyed World at War (and still am). The multiplayer is just as addicting as COD4's was, and the Zombie mode is a nice touch.
Tank @ Nov 14th 2008 10:35AM
I'm pretty sure you're correct
Emophia @ Nov 14th 2008 11:15AM
Ye, he is right.
Tsk tsk.
offday @ Nov 14th 2008 11:31AM
lol. Wow. That's embarrassing.
Glen @ Nov 14th 2008 11:54AM
Eh, it's an honest mistake, really. It would have been truly embarrassing if it was a screenshot from, like, Hour of Victory.
D_Average @ Nov 14th 2008 1:22PM
Am I insane or did Joystiq really quote Yahoo Games?
BananaBoat @ Nov 14th 2008 11:24PM
"Step right up, get your perfect scores here! PERFECT SCORES HERE, 5 DOLLARS! Get em while they're hot and sordid!"
Dirty @ Nov 14th 2008 10:27AM
Looks like it will be fun.... whenever I get to it. At least I can take mirrors edge off my list, the demo made me sick.
Burritoclock @ Nov 14th 2008 12:00PM
That's a shame, what kind of TV were you using?
Dirty @ Nov 14th 2008 12:22PM
42" 720P DLP. Maybe I was sitting to close.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 14th 2008 10:28AM
Great game with a lot of features. Ima sink myself into the single player campaign starting tomorrow morning. :)
Vcize @ Nov 14th 2008 11:15AM
Single player? Don't you mean co-op?
That alone would make me pick up this game. Imagine CoD4's campaign with co-op...
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 14th 2008 11:32AM
Yeah, single, for the ch33voz and to unlock the Zombie mode :D
Sorry man I woulda got in with ya last night but mah buddy and I are playing Gears 2 campaign on Insane. Hot damn is it badass when Reavers land right in front of you walking around reeking havok. Chaos emerges everywhere without any framerate drops. Too damn awesome!
After we beat it then we're gonna be doing some co-op on COD: WaW.
xGeneral DEATHx (Mr ESC Welcome Back Party Ultimate Mega Action Force) @ Nov 14th 2008 12:22PM
Don't be such a douche, Fenix...GAWSH!
J/k...hit me up when you guys are doing some Horde mode/CoD WAW madness. Clan GHEY FTW!
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 14th 2008 1:01PM
Lvl55 [GHEY]xFenixKnightx
Ghey Clan, never forget! lol! :D
Shagittarius @ Nov 14th 2008 2:01PM
The Bearded Clan utterly pwns the Ghey clan.
Misfit Toy @ Nov 14th 2008 10:31AM
Zombie mode is all the rage this year. Its the new black.
Call of Duty: World at War
World of Warcraft
Grand Theft Auto IV
Left 4 Dead
...and Halo 3 has a zombie mode (Infection), and RE5 is coming out soon. Man...that is a lot of zombies!
RiccochetJ @ Nov 14th 2008 10:42AM
Sounds like someone's complaining to me...
*stink eye*
Misfit Toy @ Nov 14th 2008 10:50PM
Not complaining. Pointing out the coincidence of it all.
LeadBoxx @ Nov 14th 2008 10:31AM
I'm having to ask for this for Christmas, as I have spent so much lately but I cannot wait to play it. I had a ton of fun on COD 3 though I don't know why everyone dogs it so much. Nothing better than stealing the flag and having a buddy pick you up in the motorcycle and flying around the map in the side car!
Professor Lario @ Nov 14th 2008 10:31AM
What a great series. As a gamer I feel lucky I can always go to the COD's for a quility experience.
Ihavepants @ Nov 14th 2008 5:08PM
Yeh, and am I the only one that the game actually got to feel sorry for the Germans? When you've made it into Berlin as a Russian that is. :(
Farmer @ Nov 17th 2008 5:47AM
No you arent! I think that Chernov ( or whatever his name was ) was supposed to do that.
Especially when the Germans were surrendering in the train station and Reznov made you shoot them..
*cry*
Trev @ Nov 14th 2008 10:32AM
I liked the beta and it's nice to see it getting some good reviews, but I just can't get excited about WWII anymore, especially in a FPS game. Maybe I'll pick this up later.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 14th 2008 10:41AM
My thoughts exactly. I'm looking at the scores and seeing 90s, but I still can't manage to think anything but 'eh'.
After being overloaded in 2007, I think will fill my limited desire for a 2008 FPS with Left 4 Dead and just call it a year.
xGeneral DEATHx (Mr ESC Welcome Back Party Ultimate Mega Action Force) @ Nov 14th 2008 10:52AM
BST:
Although my love for this game is like a truck, I definitely agree that for most of us, a change is necessary...I didn't touch Medal of Honor or BIA:HH this year just to save myself for this game, and so far I have been pleased. Have you had a chance to play the L4D demo yet? I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed with it. It rocks!
baby sea tuna @ Nov 14th 2008 11:13AM
Nah, too busy with Fallout. Definitely wanna try the demo before the game comes out next week. I saw a commercial last night and my jaw was on the damn floor.
Heh (Mr. ESC, living in the hearts of us all) @ Nov 14th 2008 2:00PM
The Left 4 Dead demo almost made me piss myself.
Buddy and me decidedto be asshats and put the difficulty on "expert" (the highest they had on the demo) and it was crazy. Just as bad if not worst than Gears' insane mode. Just..zombies..everywhere..it was like a gang rape on my body. :(
Ihavepants @ Nov 14th 2008 11:58PM
Expert is the only difficulty you should really play it on.
um..wow @ Nov 14th 2008 10:35AM
Remember people, if you keep buying World War 2 games, companies will never stop making them. Think of the future.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 14th 2008 10:46AM
No big deal if they keep making them...
COD2 Xbox360 = GOOD! (Buy)
COD: WaW = GOOD! (Buy)
BIA: HH = MEH (No Buy)
Medal of Honor Airborne = MEH (No Buy)
COD3 = Decent (Rent)
Not that difficult.
xGeneral DEATHx (Mr ESC Welcome Back Party Ultimate Mega Action Force) @ Nov 14th 2008 10:49AM
So far, this game has validated my faith in Treyarch in every way possible. Back when Call of Duty 3 came out, so many folks jumped on Treyarch for being "incompetent", not realizing that CoD3 was shoved out the door almost literally in 11 months. This game so far has exceeded even my expectations. Excellent work, Treyarch!
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Nov 14th 2008 10:51AM
WHAA? IT'S ACTUALLY A GOOD GAME?? BUT I THOUGHT TREYARCH WAS A HORRIBLE DEVELOPER??? THE INTERNET WOULD NEVER LIE TO ME.
Glad to see that this actually did turn out to be a good game.
Optimus Prime @ Nov 14th 2008 11:34AM
Hahahah yeah, OMG?! What happened?! Never understood all the Treyarch hatin'. Zombie hatin' is the new shit apparently. Not here so much as other places though.
Good job Treyarch!
Chris Miller @ Nov 14th 2008 11:05AM
It's only such a good game because it's using INFINITY WARD'S CALL OF DUTY 4 ENGINE. Sorry, I had to say it. It's the plain truth. Infinity Ward still holds the ball.
azuravian @ Nov 14th 2008 12:00PM
So was Bioshock only good because it used Unreal Engine 3?
xGeneral DEATHx (Mr ESC Welcome Back Party Ultimate Mega Action Force) @ Nov 14th 2008 12:24PM
PWNED.
Chris Miller @ Nov 14th 2008 12:32PM
No, but I doubt Bioshock would have been NEARLY as good if they made their own in-house engine. IE: World at War likely would have blown if they made their own engine. Besides, there's a difference between using an engine that's generally meant to be licensed off and just taking off another team from the same developer. Even Quantum of Solace...still under Activision, made by Treyarch. Aside from it's shortness, good game MAINLY because of the solid foundation it was built upon.
Zeus.:God @ Nov 14th 2008 6:02PM
Played the beta for the PC for about 20 minutes. Uninstalled it immediately after that. The game was terrible even in it's "beta" release, which we all know damn well is a fucking demo nowadays.
But really, this game isn't going to be getting my $65 and some-odd cents.
Mr Khan @ Nov 14th 2008 11:05AM
(anecdotal evidence warning)
My roommate got it, he loves 4, but can't stand 5. Boring and repetitive, he says. He tried to "return" it to GameStop, and they said they'd give him $25 used, so now he's just sticking with it
Though my fascination with the Soviet Union makes it fun to watch certain parts
(anecdotal evidence has passed)
Jake11- Born and raised in W. Philly @ Nov 14th 2008 2:53PM
i'll give him 30 bucks for it
Emophia @ Nov 14th 2008 11:18AM
No interest, I'd rather just keep playing 5.
I still have either Left 4 Dead or Resistance 2 to get anyways.
Emophia @ Nov 14th 2008 11:19AM
*For my FPS needs
amart @ Nov 14th 2008 11:40AM
lol: I was going to ask if you meant '4' not '5', then I saw you made another comment, clarifying the previous one--except you missed it again!
Emophia @ Nov 14th 2008 2:14PM
*Call of duty 4
*whistles*
JoeTheBlow @ Nov 14th 2008 11:18AM
Still not the slightest bit interested.
Using those shitty old weapons after enjoying some Modern Warfare would be like going back to dial-up and a Pentium1.
Not gonna happen.
WiNG [Life in a Game] @ Nov 14th 2008 11:38AM
What about a history-based game where you play as an FPS player, but in the mid-1990s?
Pings over 20.
Models with under 2 million polys.
That awful modem dialup noise.
Scary.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 14th 2008 11:40AM
Seriously? You just CANT go back? LOL!
Theres a lot of people who enjoy oldschool muscle cars even though theres new high tech sweet ass monsters like the new SS Camaro, Hemi Dodge Charger, Saleen Mustang, etc...
I think I actually like the Thompson more than the P90 :) Definately sounds better.
xGeneral DEATHx (Mr ESC Welcome Back Party Ultimate Mega Action Force) @ Nov 14th 2008 12:27PM
The Thompson feels a lot more sturdy IRL; the P90 makes me think of Will Smith holding the Noisy Cricket:
"I feel like I'm-a break this damn thing!"
badbhoy @ Nov 14th 2008 11:25AM
The older weapons are what actually make it interesting.
Plus releasing the hounds in place of the carpet bombing is a nice touch in multiplayer. It's great to follow the dogs and get some nice cheap shots as the other team panics and runs into corners.
