Following October's sales boost, Xbox 360 is now poised to do in three years what its predecessor, Xbox, failed to do in its four short years in production. "By the end of this month, we expect our global installed base to reach 25 million units, surpassing that of the first Xbox," declared Microsoft Entertainment & Devices Division CFO Mindy Mount at yesterday's BMO Capital Market conference in New York. Mount was confident that this milestone was "only the start," though, since historically, more than 75 percent of a console's total sales come after its price has dropped to $199 or below.
And here's the part where we all say: Great, kid. Don't get cocky.

You must either enjoy collecting the same system, or you are ignorant to fixing your system.

Why? If you didn't void the warranty you had no reason to buy a new one. If thats the case, its your own fault, sucka.

My brother had to buy two of them because after the first failed and was not under warranty he didn't think it would be best to pay MS to send him another refurbished console that would also break.

Um, I don't think there's anything wrong with having multiple 360s... i have 3 as well... one in every room I have a TV in.
Excluding the fact that I have lots of friends who come over who like video games, the 360 also serves as a:
1) DVD player
2) Media center extender that plays all the AUDIO and VIDEO I have on my main PC.
3) CD player
4) Ipod / MP3 connector to allow music playback thru amplifier
5) Video / MSN / text chat client
... plus when the NXE update comes, you'll be able to stream Netflix.
(oh and all mine still work)

Well the stats will be skewed from multiple purchases. The fact still remains that they have 25 million 360's in the market.

@Patrick: So you are saying you own 2 different Xboxes that are in use... how exactly would they be able to know that you bought one for you, and one for your son? I guess I just don't see the point in your comment?

Did you read the thread you just threw another comment on? He explained why he has multiple consoles, and then someone else went into even further detail on the merits of having multiple consoles. Were I able to make better use of the media extender, and felt like buying another 360, you could count me in.

If you are saying that you bought separate 360s for separate people within your household and area, then that's still applying to the charts. I don't understand your comment either if this is the case.
If you aren't under warranty, it's still cheaper to fix any problem than buying a new console.

Most of those replies were on page two, so I actually didn't read them. But even so, I was only pointing out that you don't need to buy multiple consoles because of the RRoD, it'd be a complete waste of money considering they're replaced for free.
I have two Wii's in my house, and I'm sure they're both counted towards the sales, just as someone with multiple 360's is.

This is quite an accomplishment, considering the 360's price hasn't begun to bottom out yet -- and it has only now reached "mainstream price".

HUH?
Am I misunderstanding you? The price is absolutely bottomed out for the next few years at least.

Right, Console manufacturers are always forthcoming on future price drops...
The current 360 price may stick for a long time, but it certainly hasn't hit bottom, because the console will continue have price reductions on manufacturing. Even MS is open about that.
More to the point, however: The 360 just now reached this mainstream price, and statistically, the majority of console sales are generated once consoles hit this mainstream price.

The original Xbox was a complete failure. Even with the ease of hacking/modding, freely pirated games, and people buying them just as media centers, the original Xbox barely outsold the GameCube worldwide! I should certainly hope the 360 outsells the original Xbox, because if the 360 can't outsell the 360, something is seriously wrong!

Then something is seriously wrong, because I don't think the 360 will ever outsell the 360. They remain locked in a never ending duel that has remained tied through their entire existence, with no sign of one pulling ahead of the other.

I am more surprised that that many original Xbox's were sold in the first place - I guess I thought the original did much worse than the 360.

Does this 25 million include all the broken ones ( aka RROD ), if so, that must mean if you go on my stats ( 3rd one since launch ) there's only around 8.33 million working ones out there! :)

I'll take this moment to say congrats to MS on their milestone. Even amidst a 1 year head start, console failures galore, extended warranties and price drops galore they have managed to have enough market penetration to cement themselves as legitimate. After the first failed attempt with the original x-box I didn't think they would have a chance at viability outside of the USA.
Let's all just take this moment to give them proper praise for this milestone. Things change each generation and I can say with 100% certainty that I will not buy another MS console in the first year after launch - if at all. I gave them a chance this generation and it was a mixed bag of nuts. They will have to prove to me next time around that they can give me a quality product that is built to last and that will be supported after the next iteration drops. If they drop the 360 like they did the original x-box I will never for give them again.
With all of that said MS has changed the industry for the better as well. They have had some of the best exclusive software and changed the way all of us look at an online gaming service. They deserve to take some shots but they also deserve praise.
Congrats on the milestone (x3)

They have certainly cemented themselves as a legitimate presence, especially as the dominant name in Mature gaming.
The next steps are ones they're already taking, to move beyond the shell they created for themselves to get as far as they have. It'll be a careful balancing act, but one i think MS is capable of, if only because of their ability to acquire excellent development help

I think the mature gaming title is up for debate. However, both the PS3 & 360 will need to be more viable in the casual market to boost their sales into the Wii-stratosphere. LBP is a good start for Sony but they need to have more exclusives to bring casual gamers into the fold. Unfortuantley for Sony the console is more geared towards enthusiast then causals based off of the price.

MS has done a good job of securing a grand array of games from all genres. IMO its better to have more games available to try then fewer games.
MS has offered many family games, RPG games, mature games, and of course shooters.
u cant say the 360 is the mature console, when more family games are sold on the 360 than the ps3 console.
more of every game genre has sold more games on the 360 console.
sony took a back seat while MS secured many deals with 3rd party developers, many more than sony.
sony's big 3 exclusive games of 2008 are:
LBP, socom, and Resistance 2- IMO those are not strong enough games to compete with the offerings on the 360 console.
we all know that sony lacked exclusive games in 2007, 2008 has not been a great year either.
MS offers at least 2 exclusives for every 1 that sony offers.
price of the ps3 is not the issue.
the 360 sold very well at $ 400 and $ 450. heck they sold over 15 million consoles at those prices.
the issue is more available games and fully supporting a released console.
sony continues to support the ps2 console, which hurts their ps3 business.
and btw. america is the worlds largest gaming market, at over 50% of total worldwide sales.
so when there is a good game console made by an american company that fully supports the console in america, americans will buy that console more than before.
american gamers know that sony puts more ps2 and ps3 support into the japanese gaming market. so many exclusive games are released in japan only.
sony does not put enough time into america and the ps3 right now.
they make money off the ps2 and no money on the ps3.
so what console do they want to support??

Price cuts only happen when console sales slip. Nintendo is greedy and enjoys rolling in cash like Scrooge McDuck, so they won't cut it very often(if at all.) Unless the Xbox totally pwns the Wii this year(very possible), then things will be bound to change.

Did anyone stop to think 80% of those failures where from abuse? I have three an Arcade, A pro (from a few months after launch), an Elite and not one has RRoDed on me. Theoretically I should have had one fail if it was just the system and not dumb asses who stuff it in a cramped space with no ventilation.

I was pretty shocked reading this to know that the original Xbox sold 25 million. I never owned one and I only ever knew maybe 2 or 3 people who did.
I just hope the success of the console means it will stick around for a good number of years to come. I think a lot of people, myself included, were worried that it would only be a 4 year cycle for the 360 before they try to up-sell us to Xbox 3/720, right? 6 years minimum please.
