As many chainsaw duelists likely already know, Xbox Live performance hasn't been exemplary over the past 24 hours. Players are reporting frequent disconnection from Microsoft's soon-to-be-updated online service, prompting the ever-watchful Xbox Live Director of Programming, Major Nelson, to issue a statement which discloses that engineers are working to "determine the root cause of this issue."
We imagine the "root cause" has something to do with the bajillion people who are simultaneously trying to play Gears of War 2 -- though it could somehow be related to the upcoming launch of the New Xbox Experience. Speaking of which, we certainly hope whatever issues that are plaguing the service are hashed out by next Wednesday, as we're not certain that Microsoft took out "pitchfork-wielding rioter" insurance on their Redmond-based headquarters.

Well, first he is unable to speak English...he may have a good grasp on the language, but his execution is horrendous.
So first he actually tells me that there were no problems with XBL...
I go back and ask him why there was now a press release on it being down, and he says there have been some intermittent problems and you may not be able to stay connected to a game, but its not down.
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME, HE JUST WORDED AROUND IT...PRAGMATICALLY, ITS DOWN SIR. This is the first thing that got to me.
Then I start asking expects me to be able to fully utilize my xbox live. He said we were working on it.
I ask him if there is any way that he would be able to compensate me...aka a 50 dollar refund and closing my account. He doesn't even acknowledge my question and says we are launching a new dashboard. My comment was, well every time I decide to get on and play this...its down.
...And that is where we got to the part I explained above. He was totally unhelpful, couldn't properly speak more than a few distinguishable babbles which I pieced together. Ignored my polite questions in vein of just dancing around them. Lied to me about service status until I pressed for more information on. And finally, he had no idea what he was talking about. I am pretty sure that you would also be peeved when you get someone like that on the phone.
I call to cancel my account and he is trying to sell me on the new xbox wii experience.. :|
Go home and go fly a kite...or MS, come back home and fly a kite so I can talk to a someone literate person.

Of course his English sucks. He lives in Quezon City in the Philippines, where he makes like five dollars an hour, which is barely enough to get buy, but still pretty good as far as wages in the Philippines go.

Yeah, so it seems to be affecting a lot of the new NXE'ers, me being one of them.
Now I can't even sign in? Whats up with that?

There are more people playing the 1 xbox 360 game gears of war 2 online in 1 day, than the total combinbed ps3 online users for LBP, Socom, and Resistance 2 in 1 day.
then you add all the other xbox 360 users playing halo 3, cod 4 & 5, etc.
IMO psn would crash if the amount of users were playing online that play on xbox live.
this happened last november too when so many people were play cod4 and halo 3 online.

however, i have yet to have any issues this year.
outside of slow matches in gears online.
(nothing longer than i would wait for a MGO match or PSN game online)
cod5 has been really fast.
xbox live in general has been fine for me.

Simple answer, don't release half a gajillion uber-popular games with online capabilities within a week of each other, and completely overhaul the online service software within a period of one month.

i don't think live is a bad service, i just think basic online play should be free since it is a part of games you pay for along with internet service. all that extra stuff people gush over can stay part of gold memberships.

I haven't had any problems connecting and I played Gears 2 online yesterday for awhile without any issues.

If you can pay $60 for a Xbox 360 game, you can afford $49.99 a year for XBL.
So stop with the excuses. XBL isn't perfect, but I'd rather play games on a more realible network than a free one.

Go back and great the title of the article again.
The "it's worth paying for more reliability" argument goes right out the window since Live hasn't shown itself to be more reliable.

I used to be a network administrator for over 100 employees, and that wasn't a easy task. I could only imagine what it must be like to handle the traffic of millions. Finding and fixing these problems isn't like throwing a few switches. It can be meticulous and grueling work. And you can't always control when stuff will hit the fan. It just happens.
I am totally fine paying the $50 a year. Its one of the cheapest subscriptions you can have for a service. Heck, I wish my internet service provider only charged $50 a year, but they instead charge $50 a month, and sometimes my connection drops. Go figure.

It would seem as if this connection issue to Live has become a ritual now around this time of the year.

This is actually one of the most ridiculous things ever to bitch about. I won't go into the whole 'is XBL worth paying for' argument, as it's perfectly acceptable for people to make their own judgments on what holds value FOR THEM, but no... I'm talking about the ridiculous 'GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK' mantra that some people always seem to scream when something like this happens, on average, maybe twice a year.
There is some sort of threshold where downtime becomes 'unacceptable' and 'refund worthy', but I assure you, XBL has never crossed said threshold.
'You pay for internet but your ISP has problems now and again' is a perfect example of this. Or a car, or ANYTHING overly complex that is impossible to protect from faulty hardware, acts of god or regular old 'peoples fuckups'. My internet regularly goes down or has issues of some sort. Hell, if I could keep my ISP issues down to twice a year, I'd be a happy camper.
But there's also a flip side to this. How do you know the issues they're having isn't THEIR ISP's issue? Microsoft doesn't own the internet and they rely on someone for their access just as much as the next guy. And yes, while generally any sort of business class connection will be much less susceptible to issues than your local 'consumer class' ISP, they aren't impervious to them. There are actually a handful of times that the T1's at our office (I'm a system admin for a local, medium sized business) have gone down due to COPPER THEFT. Not to mention the several times some random dude on a backhoe at a construction site didn't get the memo that there's 200+ strands of fiber buried in a pipe where's digging.
Trust me, shit happens. If it happens to you, it happens to them.
People need to chill and realize that the things you care about (and pay for) aren't any less susceptible to damage and downtime than anything else in life that breaks, normal people accept as 'shit happens', shrug, and move on from.

This seems to happen every time there is an update, or close to the holiday season. Not that I'm whining too much, I've been mostly offline with Fallout 3 and Silent Hill: Homecoming anyhow.
You guys think frequent disconnects for $50 a year is bad? Over the weekend, on World of Warcraft, there were 1000+ people queues, with a wait time of over an hours, to even log in. And us WoW freaks pay $15 a month.
