Turkish inmate escapes jail in cardboard box, Solid Snake approves
We've all heard that life imitates art -- but we rarely hear of instances of life imitating video games (LARPing events notwithstanding). However, a certain 42-year-old Turkish citizen who recently decided to end his seven-year prison sentence prematurely must have been a sizable Metal Gear Solid fan -- using a five-foot by four-foot cardboard box set aside for stationary shipment, the Turk (whose name has yet to be revealed to the media) effectively mailed himself out of a German prison.
Police expect that the once-incarcerated man, who is still at large, had help both on the outside and the inside, though his fellow prisoners are remaining tight-lipped about his Solid Snake-esque evacuation. One of his accomplices reportedly spoke to authorities about the former inmate's other escape tactics -- one involved distracting his jailers with a bevy of nudie mags, while another required the man to wait for the prison's night guard to inexplicably announce his fatigue to his captivated audience.

I just think it's a shame that the inmate's name hasn't been revealed, otherwise there'd be a beautiful string of messages with his name elongated as people cry out to him, demanding to know what's wrong or asking him to respond.

This guy better keep a la-li-lu-le-low profile.

OMG!! Is this actually true? If so its proof that hiding in a cardboard box actually works lol. But seriously this is hilarious. I love it.

You like Castlevania, don't you?
Hyams @ Nov 15th 2008 9:14PM
I find that video of the NES Metal Gear to be remarkable.
I mean, the dude says, "I'M GETTING SLEEPY!!", whereas I was expecting a half hour discussion of what exactly that entailed. And the opening radio conversation barely lasted twenty seconds.
What is this concise abomination, and why does it has the Metal Gear name on it?
Donald @ Nov 15th 2008 9:51PM
In my day, inexplicable one-liners were the equivalent of 90-minute cut scenes.
Jon2309 @ Nov 15th 2008 9:22PM
The Orange Box.
I laughed.
Hyams @ Nov 15th 2008 9:28PM
Actually, MGS2 came out 6 years before The Orange Box, so, funnily enough, it's not actually a reference to that.
Moptimus Slime @ Nov 15th 2008 9:18PM
Naw, to be a true MGS escape, he'd have to fake his death using nothing but a bottle of ketchup and some rations.
Nytemare @ Nov 15th 2008 9:25PM
A box with "The Orange" on it...haha I get it...
Air @ Nov 15th 2008 9:37PM
I hope theres holes in that box or...
MOT @ Nov 15th 2008 9:40PM
This story isn't worthy of a Solid Snake reference. If he had crept out of prison in the box (through the prison door and gates, etc.) I would be impressed. But mailed himself? Didn't that happen a few years back?
DBuck_Eye @ Nov 15th 2008 10:07PM
And I thought America had the most incompetent justice system.
BigD145 @ Nov 15th 2008 10:14PM
America is really good about hanging onto inmates. A little too good. Very few inmates did more than just grow some plants or happen to have plant leaves on their person.
Skipjimroo @ Nov 16th 2008 8:05PM
And the American inmates are even really good at hanging on to each other.
All too frequently.
And roughly.
J.Goodwin @ Nov 15th 2008 10:13PM
Silly Germans, how can you use prisoners as slave labor to feed the prison industrial complex if you let them escape?
Rhamsey @ Nov 15th 2008 10:43PM
this guy wins the internet, and part of my hart...
in a straight way
Rhamsey @ Nov 15th 2008 10:49PM
yeah, i know i forgot the e. doesnt matter though, this guy is still awesome.
Alien Lord @ Nov 15th 2008 11:24PM
Damn I didn't think the Turks were so incompetent.
randomshagz @ Nov 16th 2008 1:43AM
Thats what happens when Mako Reactors destroy wildlife and outcast villages, people began to despise their work.
Trance Addix @ Nov 16th 2008 10:53AM
Damn Turks need to get their act together! And find a new leader.
Levi @ Nov 16th 2008 11:19PM
That's nobody's business but the Turks.

Blank-Mage @ Nov 15th 2008 11:44PM
It kinda bothers me that this man, whoever he is, is totally unaware that he won over a group of gamers from a distant country. He's a celebrity and he doesn't even know it.
KingTorres @ Nov 15th 2008 11:55PM
He'll know it when the sirens catch up with him :)
turk1923 @ Nov 16th 2008 8:28AM
Not just a distant country. All the Turkish gamers will get abreath of this news soon I'm sure. We're all online like you guys, not a stereotpyical Middle Eastern nation. We're the only western Muslim country.
Abuzar Baloach @ Nov 16th 2008 2:18PM

You're stereotyping too.

LOLZ F'IN UBER LEETZ.
Those Germans must feel pretty damn stupid (except for that one gamer, who actually appreciates the irony of the situation).
Popfrogs @ Nov 17th 2008 12:15PM
This guy was extra smart. He had 2 boxes to choose from, and he didn't pick the one marked No Place for Hideo.
StingerVI @ Nov 16th 2008 1:00AM
I'm guessing the guard's name is Johnny.
There is always a Johnny around every time somebody sneaks away from a jail or torture room in a trusty cardboard box.
Blank-Mage @ Nov 16th 2008 1:10PM
I resent that.
&rew @ Nov 16th 2008 1:00AM
Don't you hate it when you buy them a expensive toy and all they do is escape with the box?
Shenmue151 @ Nov 16th 2008 1:11AM
I wonder if the guards even had a question mark over there head? Guess they didn't suspect a thing... What was that noise?
