Get a sneak peek at the Prince of Persia movie, for a price
No, dear readers, we're not charging you for entry to this particular post (though we do hear that subscription-based content is the wave of the future) -- the price we speak of is an intangible one, but a costly one nonetheless. After the break, we've posted a behind-the-scenes look at Jerry Bruckheimer's first foray into game-to-movie adaptations, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time -- a look which is offered through the mind-numbing lens of Entertainment Tonight. So if you want to get a look at the film's impressive backdrop (which, according to Bruckheimer, is of Lawrence of Arabia quality), you're going to have to sacrifice a few of your lesser-used mental faculties. Seriously, if you have any important long division to do today, we suggest skipping ahead.

Cross your fingers for Donnie Wahlburg.
FSK405K @ Nov 16th 2008 2:29PM
Okay, people, note the irony. They're filming Prince of PERSIA in MOROCCO.
onetrueping @ Nov 16th 2008 2:33PM
Where's the irony? The two locations have vastly similar landscapes, and architecture and culture similar enough for your average American.
bise @ Nov 16th 2008 2:40PM
they could film it in IRAN
Haggard @ Nov 16th 2008 4:12PM
Movies get filmed in the wrong countries all the time. Heck, even feature TV shows do. You think they're gonna go to exactly the right country which most viewers couldn't tell the difference between, when they could go to one where filming would be far cheaper?
Why do you think some of the greatest films set in America are 'Spaghetti' Westerns?
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Nov 16th 2008 4:16PM
It's like when they filmed movies about the Vietnam war in Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia... for the longest time. The only people who'd notice is those who are familiar with the locals.
Jakka ( The Order of Haters of Balance) @ Nov 16th 2008 4:52PM
Oh come on. Even the German Castle in Indiana Jones 3 was filmed in Scotland. And let's not forget Tatooine - you think they've done it on a real Desert Planet?
They could've done a lot worse than Marroco, as I've been there myself and parts of it are probably as close to the general perception of "Persia" as it can get...
Clutch_beast @ Nov 16th 2008 5:26PM
Finally, someone who will understand my woes! How could Peter Jackson disservice J.R. Tolkien by filming in New Zealand! That's nowhere even close to middle-earth!
LaughingTarget @ Nov 16th 2008 7:26PM
Ya, New Zealand is bottom-right Earth.
FSK405K @ Nov 16th 2008 8:36PM
It would be fine to film in other locations if the title was anything except "Prince of Persia", but doing so with that title is like if they had filmed "Mr. Smith Goes to Washigton" in any state capital that looks similar, and arguing it was "close enough".
Batzarro @ Nov 16th 2008 9:21PM
Now, now, it's not the movies fault most people can't tell The Arecibo Telescope for a "Secret Base in Cuba". Or Bayamon, PR for freakin' Iraq.
aj @ Nov 16th 2008 10:25PM
It always bothered me that a great many American movies and TV shows are filmed in Canada. I know Canada looks exactly like the US, it's just that many Americans actually think of Canada as something alien or foreign, yet almost everything they see on film is actually Canada. It really blows my mind.
Zoot Suit Jedi @ Nov 17th 2008 12:26PM
Maybe I misunderstood, (I'm not sitting through that garbage again to find out) but I think that they are filming on location in northern Africa. It is the soundstage REPLICA that is of Morocco, which I don't belive is irony per se, but is ridiculous, as they could have just made a REPLICA of PERSIA.
joe @ Nov 16th 2008 3:24PM
I find it fascinating that they didn't mention at all that it's based on a video game. I'm not sure if that's a good sign or a bad sign. I'm slightly leaning towards good.
Temidien @ Nov 16th 2008 3:40PM
It's good.
If the film turns out to suck, the video game community won't be penalized for the bad project and other game-to-film projects can step forward without the bad publicity.
If in some way the film is actually good, then more projects based on games will be greenlighted and more importantly, games can begin to be placed on a pedestal akin to novels by the general public as sources for excellent writing and story-telling.
I'm hoping the media and marketing downplays the films connection to the games if for no other reason than what I just listed.
snarfoogle @ Nov 16th 2008 4:51PM
@Temidien
Video games, sources for excellent writing? Doubt it.
Rob @ Nov 17th 2008 2:37AM
The guy playing the prince, Jake G. is a very good actor, so hopefully it will be alright. :)
Superstar90 @ Nov 16th 2008 4:32PM
OMG I JUST HAD A SEIZURE FROM THAT VOICE!
Reader @ Nov 16th 2008 7:17PM
Eh.. eh eh eh...
Not looking great, but I didn't have any expectations anyway. I don't like how they seem to be going for comedy in the scene he's being attacked by the girl (forget her name).
Ethan @ Nov 16th 2008 7:33PM
I sure benefited from that shallow, sycophantic two-faced look at the new PoP movie.
riggs @ Nov 16th 2008 9:26PM
OMG ITS JESUS! *POINTS*
Rob @ Nov 17th 2008 2:35AM
KILL IT!
Orionsaint @ Nov 16th 2008 9:55PM
Isn't the Prince middle eastern in a middle eastern land? Why is he a white american guy here?
aj @ Nov 16th 2008 10:28PM
It's a Jerry Bruckheimer movie. It's going to be exactly the same as every other Jerry Bruckheimer movie ever made, except instead of cars or pirates, it will be brown people with curved swords. There. I just saved you 12$.
Cale @ Nov 16th 2008 10:34PM
Just because it's set in a desert does not mean your film is going to be anywhere near as stunning as Lawrence of Arabia. You Mr. Bruckenheimer are no David Lean.
Graham Wellington (formerly tyrone washington, or marsha goldberg) @ Nov 16th 2008 10:38PM
so is this scorpion king 3 going straight to dvd or will it be released in theaters?
Bomberman65 @ Nov 16th 2008 10:42PM
Am I the only one who thinks it looks great. I mean I loved Max Payne but maybe its just me. But I for one am looking forward to this Prince of Persia film.
Rob @ Nov 17th 2008 2:30AM
Isn't that the same guy who played Donnie in Donnie Darko?
ToRo @ Nov 17th 2008 9:48AM
Yes it is. And he was sooooo flirting with that reporter. $5 I don't have says he got her number.
nixon @ Nov 18th 2008 2:58AM
my goodness. i should've heeded the warning. that was horrible. i remember being sort of glad, or maybe relieved when i heard that jake gyllenhaal was going to be the prince. i was wrong to feel that...so, so wrong.
