Is there any reason to upgrade to a DSi when it releases stateside? I have never upgraded my PSP because I never saw a need as the hardware revisions didn't merit another purchase. I'm wondering if the same can be said for the DS to anyone that has imported one or had hands on time with one.

Wait to see what will be coming down the line for the DS store. Otherwise, I don't think it's worth it just yet.

My rule is no new retail software, no deal. GBA SP didn't faze me, and neither did the Lite.

I had to change my ruling to "retail software" because DSiWare isn't going to faze me either. Downloadables are nice, but not ~$200 nice.

The DSWare is good enough... plus, some devs are interested in the internal memory because the DLC, like DJ Max Technika.

Besides, it would be just 20 dlls more expensive. Yes, the DSi is $180 dlls equivalent in Japan, but the DS Lite is $160 equivalent... just $20 dlls more.

Plus, it has bigger screens, better speakers, browser, wireless G (the PSP has wireless B), a better D-Pad and shoulder buttons.

And there is some confusion regarding the DSi battery life: yes, it does have one less hour in the highest setting BUT it has one extra level of brightness compared to the DS Lite. In fact, the second brighness in the DSi is like the fourth level on the DS Lite.

As for the GBA slot, I have three DS Lite's, 1 GBA SP and one Micro...

Fernando -

My question isn't if I should buy the DSi new over the DS. My questions is this - Is the DSi worth e selling my Ds for and picking up a DSi. Just like with the two PSP revisions I see no purpose in selling my current handheld and upgrading. What say you to convince me this is worth an upgrade?

Ah ok... now I get your question...

Well, then you need to wait for what games will the DSWare offer. I mean, you have to chose between GBA slot or DSWare. That's the main difference between the two revisions.

If you play a lot of GBA and the DS is the only hardware that you have to play GBA games, then keep the normal DS.

I don't play a lot of GBA titles anymore, so the lack of a GBA slot on the DSi is not a factor to me... besides I have a GBA SP and a Micro if I want to play GBA games.

But as for the rest of the hardware, the DSi has the same functionality as the Lite, but better (better screens, brightness, speakers, WiFi, storage, buttons, even the matte color looks better in my opinion)

Plus you get a few extras: music player with interactive visualizers, camera, notepad, calculator, calendar, journal and free DLC, like Zelda or Metroid themes, Mario calendars, Animal Crossing clocks, etc. (most of that DLC will be free).

So, is GBA slot, vs all the other stuff. It all depends how much do you play GBA games.

Ok now we are getting somewhere. I have a cell phone to do all of that extra functionality you mentioned like photos, wi-fi etc - so that doesn't impress me. I don't play any GBA games so I wouldn't miss the slot at all. I'm not very interested in downloading games which seems like the true added functionality - again, I have an iPhone I can quickly download fun games on. For me it's probably not worth the premium price - again, I still have a fatty PSP.

The new PSP revision has made me think of upgrading a little bit. I know the PSP 2000 decreased loading times and was lighter but the 3000 has added a brighter screen & a built in mic for skype support (which I use). If I lived in a bigger city that was blanketed in wi-fi I might just dump my cell phone. Also, if I had the reflexes to have downloaded the netshare app from Nullriver on my iPhone I could also make use of some Skype calls.

I appreciate the feedback but with allot of good games out and the current state of the economy (especially with christmas on the way) I will just hold tight. Besides, I heard the DSi doesn't support those cartridges that allow me to play copied games and ROMs like the PSP-3000 is allegedly pandora proof.

Well... as for playing ROMS, I don't support that, but I do support Homebrew games and applications.

The DSi is already hacked via SD Slot, so by the time the DSi is released here in US, the Homebrew scene on the DSi will be very advanced. So, it's nice to have Homebrew without need additional hardware.

Guess the PS3 price cut is giving it some wings in the land of the rising sun, eh?

I think this weeks surge in Japan was because of Last Remnant.

My DS isn't 'phat'. It prefers 'husky'.

Anyway, I've owned enough Gameboys (Pocket, Advance, SP, micro; only one at a time, however) that I'm not in a rush for another DS just yet. The original is working just fine.

In fact, if anything I'm going against the grain and am keeping my eye out for great $10-$15 GBA games I missed out on (e.g. Metroid Zero Mission is a new game from my perspective)

Metroid Zero Mission is excellent... my second favorite.

1. Metroid Prime 1
2. Metroid Zero Mission
3. Super Metroid

If you can find the game, get it.

Maybe the DSWare will offer GB and GBA titles to download. The max price for DSWare software is 800 Points, so, if Nintendo releases titles like Metroid Fusion or Zero Mission for $8 dlls, would be great.

I always hoped that the DS would sell a cartridge that could download software online, but i don't want another DS just to be able to do that. Unless they sold GBA games in the absence of the slot, then i might reconsider. But chances are that they would probably charge an exorbitant amount for them anyway.

And Sony can suck it. I'll wait until they come to their senses and finally slap a touch screen on the PSP. Good job shoving every damn thing into a handheld, but having control limited to the D-Pad (internet browser in particular) holds the system back.

Well... they already said that the maximun price for DSWare titles will be 800 Points... so, $8 dlls max for a good GBA game is a good price.

Altough, I guess 800 Points will be for DSi exclusives titles...

Well, with touchscreen, you can play FPS like a mouse and keyboard: stylus acts as a mouse to aim, D-Pad acts like ASDW keys to move. And icons in the touchscreen acts like keys for the weapons.

Well... you need also a second screen, because you need the upper screen to display the action... here is an example. It feels kinda like mouse and keyboard:

A touch screen would ruin the PSP.

Give the PSP(2) another anologue stick and leave the touchyness the the DS Lite.

I could live with 800, but i was just making a generalization when i see the shittiest of the shitty neogeo games being sold on their for 900 points.

And why would a touch screen ruin the PSP? Did a touch screen ruin the DS? Most of the games i play don't even utilize it for more than 1% of the game. It would make so many things convienent. I would never use it for FPS's, as Metroid Prime Hunters was on of the most crippling experiences in video game history.

If they do use 2 analog sticks for the next PSP, it'll be interesting to see how they pull it off. I'm sure they'll want to keep the design sleek like it is now, but with both thumbs on the sticks, and pointer fingers on the triggers, that's a lot of pressure on the other three. I have big hands, and i have a hard time using the PSP Phat, and even a harder time playing the games that require the analog stick. I think it would need more grip to fit in the palms better, something i think the DS does much better currently.

They probably don't add a touch screen for the reason you mention. It wouldn't be very use full for gameplay, and when your dealing with a cost-to-benefit ratio for production, its just seems like a better move not to include a touch screen.

If Sony makes a completely new handhold (PSP 2), I hope it has two analog sticks. Action games would greatly benefit from the inclusion. I agree with you though, on the fact that it would be hard to hold on the current PSP design. They would have to modify the body of the unit, which is why I'm almost 100% sure that there will be no second analog stick on this PSP generation.
