Blood of Bahamut DS debut trailer
Not sure what to think about Square Enix's newly unveiled DS title Blood of Bahamut? Well, we're pretty sure the Japanese debut trailer isn't going to provide much in the way of answers. What you will get: snippets of dual-screen gameplay showing off massive enemies that are highly reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus' lumbering giants ... except with laser eyes. You can size up the trailer after the break.

PLEASE be more fun and varied than the trailer.

Yeah gameplay looks okay as it gives a crisis core/ff12 feeling to it. But are you the flying platform all the time fighting monsters and the giant collossus or is there more to it then the trailers leads on??
As far as the world environments go this seems like the least colorful and environment-less game square enix has made. Hope it turns out better then its looking.

Anyone else seeing the massive "inspiration" from SoC? I'll pass on what I saw in the trailer.. unappealing.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 17th 2008 9:36AM
You didn't know? Any game with big enemies is now a SoTC knockoff.
That looked awful, though I can't say I'm surprised. Maybe if it was a 360/ps3 game it would have looked and played better, but the gameplay looks extremely shallow.
Ranus Studios @ Nov 17th 2008 10:26AM
I admit that there's a rash of people assuming that big enemies=SotC knockoff, but the design of the giant, and even its little glowing blue weak points, were incredibly reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus. But what do I know, this was just a trailer.
mr nimblewick @ Nov 17th 2008 10:52AM
Oh, what a surprise. tmac brings up the 360/ps3.
Geist @ Nov 17th 2008 10:59AM
No but nimblewick you don't understand. If it was released on the PS3/360 this game would've cured cancer and ended poverty. But alas, it's being released on a Nintendo system so clearly there's going to be 6 more weeks of winter or something.
Mr Khan @ Nov 17th 2008 11:12AM
It is fun watching the definition of "hardcore game" shrink to a narrower and narrower classification
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 17th 2008 12:01PM
No one said anything about it being a hardcore or casual game. I just don't think anyone who's obviously not a nintendo fanboy could look at that game and not see how much wasted potential there is by releasing it on hardware that's around 10 years old (in terms of looks).
The problems also stretch into terms of scale, as that's not a very big monster seeing as the little guy isn't far from the top of his hand when it hits the ground. What's the point of a game like this when the monster's kinda small?
I've also heard that this uses some form of multiplayer. I'm sure I don't have to explain how there's wasted potential there.
I could go on and on but I'm sure you all get the picture. I know they're only releasing it on the ds because they're petrified of taking any sort of risk at all but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be called out.
G-Anderton @ Nov 17th 2008 2:53PM
Well... The overall design of the enemy is one they've had kicking around for years. Alexander, a summon featured in several final fantasy games. google some screen shots of FF9s alexander (the last time he was featured prominently) basically identical, minus the mountain anyway.
If nothing else this is square enix saying, "hey we have big monsters. I bet we could do that too."

@whichever idiot
we are seriously comparing DS games with PS3/60 now? It's bad enough when people do that with Wii games but... wow...
what's next - complaints that Super Pro Anagrams Plus (for all Java-enabled mobile phones!) isn't a PS3/60 game?
so fill me in, is Squenix not allowed to make *any* DS/PSP game now? Or are they allowed to make handheld games just as long as the graphics are 2D or something? What are the rules here?
seriously they are making loads of PS3/60 games, so if they make a few handheld games too - deal with it.
Mogster @ Nov 17th 2008 3:08PM
Oh screw you tmac you fool. You're judging the gameplay and what the game is gonna be like from a minute long montage?
OBVIOUSLY any game could be recreated better on a home console. Well done for making yourself look like an idiot by pointing that out as if it was something only you had realised!
Everytime you open your mouth you look like more of a prick. This is a DS GAME and not a 360/PS3 GAME. So what the hells the point in comparing to a home console game? Moron.
t_m @ Nov 18th 2008 12:04AM
if we are going to start making stupid comparisons, then how about:
why wasn't it released on PC to run only on 4gb systems with the latest graphics cards... just think of all the wasted potential by releasing it on DS/PSP/Wii/360/PS3 when they could have had it running in 2560x1600 realHD(tm)!!
/facepalm
Emophia @ Nov 17th 2008 10:00AM
Looks like the giant colossus aint a giant, seriously, his hand is only like 4 times the size of the main character.
Seriously, for a guy who has both a city and a volcano on his left shoulder, that's really small. They could have done so many cool things with scale, and we get that?
Missed opportunity, this game is gonna be cack.
ComicShaman @ Nov 17th 2008 11:58AM
It seems to me that a handheld is not really the place to experiment with "massive scale" games. Epic giant bosses work better on a full-sized screen.
Ranus Studios @ Nov 17th 2008 10:24AM
Was this just a single boss fight or something? The teaser image implies so much potential, but this... not so much.
Superstar90 @ Nov 17th 2008 11:06AM
I'm pretty sure the game will have more than just that fight. So unless the other parts are better this game will probably be dull.
Gary @ Nov 17th 2008 12:16PM
Resembles Golden Sun, especially the music.
Kamizar @ Nov 17th 2008 3:32PM
The combat doesn't though, and that was a big part of Golden Sun, esp. Djinn and super summons.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Nov 17th 2008 1:47PM
If I could play that level in co-op with a spreadshot powerup and the Konami code, that'd be epic.
Covarr @ Nov 17th 2008 2:40PM
Dammit, Square Enix, stop making 3D games with 2D sprites! I mean, it's okay for a RTS game, I guess, but in a platformer or action game it simply means that the sprites don't have lighting applied to them, and don't work well with depth, making it WAY more difficult than it should be to see where you are on the screen. Seriously, even Cel-shaded games like Wind Waker didn't mess with my depth perception this much.
