Really? When I put the progressive scan on, the game is displayed in a lower resolution and the sound is out of sync with the video during cutscenes.

The video mode changes, but the resolution of the actual image doesn't go down. You're viewing at best 720x480 either way, even if it is stretching it to 1920x1080.

No no, I'm using the English version of the game, so I normally view it at 576p (PAL), but when I put on the progressive scan it drops down to 480p (NTSC).

Interesting. I nearly barfed when I stuck SOTC into my PS3... maybe I don't have the settings right.

As others have said - there's no difference between the two currently available models besides HD space. The chart is unnecessarily complicated by models that are no longer in production.

The real answer is - buy the $400 model and spend $100 on a 320 gig drive, if space is a worry, or spend it on games if it's not (and 80 gigs is plenty unless you plan on storing tons of your own media on the drive).

Ah, forgot to mention that later PS3's are missing other features like SACD compatibility, so they're ever more gimped.

Totally true. But does removing SACD count as a noticeable gimp though? What percentage of the population has any SACDs? 0.01%? I'm guessing the 3 of us who know SACD was removed are also the only 3 who ever tried an SACD on a PS3 (and the ones I tried were only borrowed, I don't own them).

I don't think removing SACD really qualifies as "gimping." Seriously, do you even know anyone who even owns a SACD?

SACD is gone and dead anyway...the new standard is Blu-specCD which not only gives superior sound on BD players but is backwards compatable with regular CD players too.

Blu-SpecCD is junk. A friend at Sony looked it up for me. It is just CDs with pits that are as well formed as BluRay's pits. The data on the disc is unchanged, so they don't sound any different at all on BluRay or CD players.

It's complete marketing nonsense.

WHAT?!?! Now that is something worse than taking out PS2 BC! That is RIDICULOUS!!! To me, one of the best features of the PS3 is the SACD support... more so than BD movies. I listen to music more than I watch movies.

Arrg!

Lars:
Given that SACDs aren't rippable, I don't give a hoot. Yeah, I listen to music, but I don't do it by inserting pieces of plastic into a reader anymore. I listen off my hard disk.

BTW, SACD support has been gone a long time. Only the 20G and 60G had it, IIRC.

I'm not going to pretend like SACD is a huge mass-market selling point, but SACD support was removed in a FIRMWARE UPDATE, not a hardware revision.

Believe it or not, there are still quality classic SACD's being released today, and many of these titles are not available in DVD-A.

I would understand if Sony did not want to produce special purpose hardware for SACD playback, but why not re-introduce firmware support for the standard?

No. It was a hardware revision. The optical drive in the later PS3s cannot read the watermark (copy protection) on SACDs.

My PS3 still plays SACDs, even with latest firmware (well, it did with 2.5, didn't check with 2.52). They did remove multichannel audio output over DTS though. Which is fine, who wants to take high quality audio and smash it back down to CD bitrates with lossy compression? Use HDMI discrete multichannel output and you can hear 6 channels at 176KHz/24-bit, even with latest firmware.

Rest in peace PS2 B/C, SACD support and multimedia card readers. : (

At least these new models are more energy efficient than the previous models.

You can plug a $20 card reader in via USB. Of course, it'll take up half your USB ports since they only have two now! Good thing hubs work.

"We'd love to say picking up PlayStation 3 is as easy as going to the store and grabbing the first box with the console's name on it."

So why don't you? It is just that easy. There are only 2 models available and the only difference is HDD size.

Even if you include all the previous models it's still as simple as this: they all play PS3 games. I have a BC model and I really thought that was a required feature... well, not so much. I almost never pop in a PS2 game. I just have no desire to play PS2 games now. It's hard to go back.

You poor, poor man. My wife was actually the one to broach using excess Christmas cash/gift cards last year to get a 60 gig and Rock Band (she's our house drummer). Conversation went like this:

Her: "We're going to want to upgrade to Blu-ray eventually, so why don't we just go ahead and get a PS3 now?"
Me:"....really?" ::grabs keys::

Bizarrely, we actually managed to find a 60 gig at our local GameStop (used, but works flawlessly).

Maybe I got lucky, but I guess what I'm really saying is: it's not too late to break the engagement and find yourself a gamer girl. ;-) One fully in favor of helping to bankroll a grown man's video game habit.

I got a gamer girl (woman) as well.
Every system I currently play was lovingly provided by her. In return she got a shiny white DSLite.
We game together fairly often.
Gamer-partners are definitely the way to go.

They want to cut down manufacturing costs. You thought the 60gb model was expensive at launch for $600? It cost Sony at least $800 to produce them at launch.

The 60gb remains the best possible version. Shame on all those that complained about the price when you see how much you lost for negligible price decreases. YOU are why there are so many SKUs.

I have to say....given the amount they have taken out of the original model of the PS3.....I have no desire to even buy a new one should I need another one beyond the 2 I have.

I would rather go on Ebay and get a 1st gen one with full PS2 BC, Flash Card Reader, etc. and upgrade the hard drive than buy brand new gimped hardware??

CMON SONY Bring the features back!!!

This is the problem - People want it both ways. They botched about the price so Sony cut features. Now they want the features back but at the lower price.

I bought a fulyl BC PS3 and I have played a grand total of 3 PS2 games. If you want to play PS2 games just dust off your PS2, find a 60 GB version or buy a used PS2 (or new) for mad cheap. If you want card readers buy a $20 card reader and plug it into your USB hub. I don't know what else to say except the people that usually bitch about this stuff are people that never intended to own a PS3 in the first place.

Man I can care less how much hard drive space I have in a ps3. I just wish they could just drop the price already so people can go out and buy its games + blu ray! Now they have completely drop off the BC with ps2 which makes me sad because I wanted to retire my phat ps2 when I/if I ever get a ps3...

Today I saw a MGS4 bundle on Amazon.com (new not used) but it has a 40gb hardrive. It is the same price on there as the non-bundle 80gb one. How does this one fit into the chart? Most importantly does it have the PS2 backwards compatability? Thanks.
