Lips mic doesn't sing with Rock Band, Guitar Hero
Keiichi Yano, head of Lips developer iNiS, told us that making the mic from his game work with titles like Rock Band and Guitar Hero: World Tour was a great idea and that he'd love to do it. Sadly, Yano recently told Multiplayer that the mic wouldn't work with those games out of the box, though the functionality could later be patched in.

Disappointing! I want this game but that would have been a nice touch.
Cheesecake Jones @ Nov 17th 2008 11:41AM
Well, they just lost a sale from me. My wife and I love Rock Band, and she loves to sing. She was really stoked about using the Lips wireless mic for RB2.
No compatibility with Rock Band = No Sale!
JJ Rooster @ Nov 17th 2008 12:00PM
Agreed. I would have only bought Lips if it worked with both games. That's unfortunate... they should have known people would want compatibility.
- 1 sale MS, you fail.
Zoot Suit Jedi @ Nov 17th 2008 12:14PM
Exactly. How many instrument peripherals do they expect me to have lying around my house anyway? By the time I'm done I'll have enough plastic guitars to equip all of Bang Camaro.
The wireless mic would have been an awesome addition to the Rock Bnad set, but I cannot justify this purchase.

jdoyler @ Dec 29th 2008 3:28PM
wow. seriously? your not buying rockband just because u cant use lips microphones..so by your logic you wont buy a new tv just because your old remote wont work with it? rockband is not a game made by the singing, it is made by the rock! i have rockband drums but i still play ghwt, even tho i cant use the drums for it properly but oh well its still a different experiance, just get over it jeez like u have no idea how retarded u actually sound
Haggard @ Nov 17th 2008 11:41AM
I don't want to start a flame war or anything (I barely play my consoles) but Lips is literally the exact same game as Singstar.
Burritoclock @ Nov 17th 2008 11:43AM
That's correct, but Singstar doesn't work on the 360, so I am not sure what your point is...
Haggard @ Nov 17th 2008 11:48AM
How would you feel if Sony released Balo 3, in which Master-Chef fights the Governant?
Cheesecake Jones @ Nov 17th 2008 11:51AM
Uhhh... they did. They called it Resistance, though. Or maybe they called it Killzone, I can't remember.
Maxwell Ash @ Nov 17th 2008 11:59AM
Yes, but singstar copied Karioke.
Burritoclock @ Nov 17th 2008 12:05PM
Yeah, kind of a dumb argument to make when discussing a Karaoke game. It's like accusing Hasbro or someone of copying because they too make a chess game, or do you think everyone that makes an FPS is copying Wolfenstien 3d?
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 17th 2008 3:52PM
@Haggard
I know its not related to the topic I wanted to vent about Farcry 2.
After playing through 50% of the game, I got somewhat board of the game play but I figured I would stick it out an just finish the game. Then, I think I triggered a bug in the AI or something because all enemies that I encountered knew where I was at all times. This made it impossible to sneak up on an enemy camp, and I had dudes shooting at me every time I exited a building. So I said fuck it, and stopped playing.
The good thing about this whole scenario is that I started a goozex account in order to trade the game.
*runs*
gk @ Nov 17th 2008 11:42AM
yes, very disappointing. it was a good excuse to pick this title up, seeing that I already have 2 wired mics. not so sure now. oh well.
Burritoclock @ Nov 17th 2008 11:44AM
Count me in the same boat, I would have gotten this just for the Wireless mic, oh well I save some money.
Wiinterfang @ Nov 17th 2008 11:45AM
No that cluttered since I'm not going to buy musical games anytime soon for these reasons.
1-I live in a studio apartment.
2-I don't have online.
3-I don't have any talent.
4-I don't have any friends.
So no Rock Hero for me.
Duke @ Nov 17th 2008 11:48AM
That post is full of sad :(
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 17th 2008 11:50AM
Indeed
:( :(
Wiinterfang @ Nov 17th 2008 11:50AM
So...Cats aren't jerks after all, go figure =D.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 17th 2008 12:54PM
I think mine would probably disagree with you.
...as he was shitting on the floor of your studio apartment.
Superstar90 @ Nov 17th 2008 1:11PM
Studio apartments are not as trendy and hip as they sound. They should rename them out-of-college-dorms.
Wiinterfang @ Nov 17th 2008 1:29PM
Studia Apartment sucks, mine doesn't even have a Working toilet >= (.
Duke @ Nov 17th 2008 2:28PM
We just got back from our honeymoon to find out my cat was hissing at the guy coming over to feed him the whole time. Yup, cats are jerks.
Anam @ Nov 17th 2008 11:45AM
That's a pretty dumb move. Compatibility with Rock Band / World Tour plus a decent price point would make it very tempting for anyone lacking a mic and figuring "hey, if I'm going to buy one anyway, might as well buy one that comes with a game."
Why on earth wouldn't that be a priority?
Dr. @ Nov 17th 2008 11:48AM
Does a RB/GH mic work with Lips?
T @ Nov 17th 2008 1:28PM
That's what I'm wondering. If that's the case...waiting a bit and grabbing a used Lips wouldn't be a bad option.
Vcize @ Nov 17th 2008 1:56PM
Trust me when I say that nothing good ever comes from recently used lips. Avoid that at all costs.
Dirk Dorkelson @ Nov 17th 2008 6:16PM
Even if it does work, the RB and GH microphones aren't motion-sensitive. Nor do they light up. I mean, you'd be able to sing and stuff, but...
I was hoping I'd be able to get "Lips" and pass my RB microphone onto a friend. No dice, though.
Duke @ Nov 17th 2008 11:48AM
Seeing how this game won't sell nearly as many copies as those other games (which have mics), I don't see how much it matters. Either way, you would have 2 or more mics in the house.
Kevlar @ Nov 17th 2008 12:31PM
Not everyone can afford to buy the special edition of RB or GH:WT.
Duke @ Nov 17th 2008 12:50PM
So you are saying people buy those games and wait for another game to come along and have a mic so they can play them? Seems like a weird idea to me.
Hafk @ Nov 17th 2008 3:59PM
Well, until GH:WT came out, I never had a Microphone for Rock Band or Rock Band 2.
Hell, I did all my singing on my live headset.
Banstyle @ Nov 17th 2008 11:48AM
Screw that. They seem to think no one cares about this kind of thing. I don't need more instruments.. enough all ready. Make your products work with each other!

MarkHawk @ Nov 17th 2008 12:06PM
With this and the FULL Zune support stripped before launch, I had no choice but to cancel my order. I wanted to use the mics for Rock Band out of box and use my Zune pass to sing songs I could not get otherwise. Ive spent to much on Rock Band to justify buying more songs for another game.
I also hate the option of not delaying the game and patching in a feature later. No offense to the developer but it's shady, even though the intentions are noble.
Tez @ Nov 17th 2008 3:14PM
This thing had Zune support?
Cyntalan @ Nov 17th 2008 12:08PM
You know, I love how the running gag for the longest time was typically about how the Wii and all its junk will amass in your house over the years of ownership, when it would seem that the true culprit is gonna be all these damn rhythm games using their own junk instead of sharing a single set of peripherals. Anyone remember the days of a peripheral being released and people developing for it, rather than the other way around? It boggles my mind how stubborn certain companies will be (lookin' at you Activision!) just to keep something, that really shouldn't be a big deal, theirs...
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 17th 2008 4:14PM
"Anyone remember the days of a peripheral being released and people developing for it, rather than the other way around?"
no. The only two peripherals I can think of the even got SOME attention was the Nintendo zapper. Maybe and the SNES bazooka thing, but thats about it.
Cyntalan @ Nov 17th 2008 8:40PM
Exactly. That, as well as the Power Glove and Power Pad. Non-controller peripherals, for the most part, weren't many peripherals that were in existence for more than one game. Those that DID get used got used by multiple developers, sometimes oddly heavily (see Power Glove). Hell, even the Wii Fit pad today was made and said "please make some games for this thing!"
Meanwhile, we have 3rd party developers going out and being stingy with their own peripherals when, in the long run, if it was mutual in some way, would help their business more than hurt, and be best for the consumer overall, as the diehard rhythm gamers currently have a room that looks akin to an Animal Crossing basement. XD
Tokomak @ Nov 17th 2008 12:10PM
Shame. Interesting as the game looks I was really hoping these would be compatible with RB/GHWT etc.
Thanks Joystiq for letting me know this in time to cancel my Amazon preorder !
Jcarpio @ Nov 17th 2008 12:28PM
Um not to defend Lips here. But isn't it up to the Activision and EA to allow the Lips Mic into the game. I mean they would want their own branded peripherals to sell first, wouldn't they?
I see it as the onus to make it happen on those two, not MS
T @ Nov 17th 2008 1:17PM
Considering Activision and HMX actually made sure each others instruments played nice for RB2/GHWT...I get the feeling that they're not the ones to blame here.
Jcarpio @ Nov 17th 2008 1:36PM
So what you're telling me is.. It's up to MS to provide a fix to another company's game so that their peripheral would work with something they didn't develop? I can see the Red Octane/Harmonix connection since they worked together at one time.
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 17th 2008 4:17PM
Your question brought up a question in my mind.
I don't know who its up to ultimately, but can Harmonix/Activision do anything about it? A mic is a mic right? Why not write some drivers to take advantage of the Singstar mic?
Jcarpio @ Nov 17th 2008 4:29PM
So the singstar mic doesn't work with rock band for PS3?
If not.. Sony fails, they suck. they lost a buy.. see where i'm going with this?
shutup @ Nov 17th 2008 12:38PM
A large corporation wanting you to use a proprietary device? Absolutely shocking.
343 Guilty Fart @ Nov 17th 2008 12:47PM
Wait, but can I use my Rock Band mic for Lips?
Seroth @ Nov 17th 2008 1:34PM
I dunno, but I feel pretty confident that Harmonix will release a patch for Rock Band that supports the Lips mic. So little worries from me.
