New Xbox Experience now available for all who applied [update]

Update: Everyone who has signed up to try and get New Xbox Experience early can now download it. According to Major Nelson (via Twitter), "No more 'a few here and a few there' We decided to just add the whole bunch of ya'. Have fun. It may take a few hours as we go through and add everyone to the list." For those who didn't sign up (and why not?), you still have to wait another 24 to 48 hours. We're sure you can find plenty to do in the interim.

All who have SIGNED up are now in. Not EVERYONE.
Cj @ Nov 17th 2008 11:15PM
Major Nelson "everyone who successfully applied to the preview program (and submitted a valid console ID) will be getting the New Xbox Experience sometime within the next few hours."
KiraXD @ Nov 17th 2008 11:19PM
awww dammit... got my hopes up for nothing... one more day... oh well...
danny. @ Nov 17th 2008 11:25PM
fool me once joystiq...
ELUNO @ Nov 17th 2008 11:29PM
I hate you joystiq! How could you do this to me!?!
BananaBoat @ Nov 17th 2008 11:43PM
"getting it" how? I didn't receive an e-mail or anything, and I successfully signed up. Do I just log in to Xbox Live?
BananaBoat @ Nov 17th 2008 11:44PM
nevermind. I logged in and got the update. Time to give this puppy a test run.
Premature ejaculation man @ Nov 17th 2008 11:44PM
I demand a refund Joystiq!!!!!!!!
Undertow?
=p
Tiptup300 @ Nov 17th 2008 11:48PM
Also, if you got the leaked copy you still have to wait till the 19th. It's really irritating, it keeps saying "AN UPDATE IS AVAILABLE! UPDATE?" Then you click yes and then it just says "CANT CONNECT OMG, UPDATE NOW!"
BananaBoat @ Nov 17th 2008 11:57PM
Netflix is great. Other than that, the interface is....ehhh....it's not any worse than the old interface, but it's just as many steps as ever to find the new demos etc.
Seems to be working fine though, if anyone is worried that it'll brick your console upon download. Be ready to watch a movie and then spend time creating an avatar though.
Now to figure out how to turn avatars off....
BananaBoat @ Nov 18th 2008 12:01AM
You know that mini-blade popup thing that I trashed as stupid a few months ago?
Yeah, I take that back. The mini-blades are excellent. They are quick, efficient, they load quickly, etc.
steve @ Nov 18th 2008 12:14AM
I just felt like spamming you inbox just to fit in...
Ayrkain @ Nov 18th 2008 1:09AM
Flamin' Poo videos all around!
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 17th 2008 11:16PM
Just downloaded it about half an hour ago and I really like everything that they've done so far. I'm installing fallout 3 now to see if it helps with any of the loading, but either way I'll end up deleting it cause I only have 6.5 gigs left before the download :(
mmxzero @ Nov 17th 2008 11:26PM
Time to clean out the fridge.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 17th 2008 11:26PM
The install took about 6 gigs and about 5 to 7 minutes. Sadly, load times are the same as before but the silence is nice. It's not worth 6 gigs out of a 20gb hard drive, but the silence is nice
mmxzero @ Nov 17th 2008 11:32PM
dang, no improvement on the load times (for fallout3 atleast)?
Ive got a little more room to work with on my HD, about 8.5 open, plus Left 4 Dead demo will be coming off. Unfortunately I have to wait until Wednesday.
MC Double Def DP @ Nov 17th 2008 11:40PM
17 hours in and the load times have never really bothered me with Fallout 3. Maybe cuz I thought they were going to be longer. But yes, silence is golden.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 17th 2008 11:43PM
It never bothered me either but it's the only game I really have other than Mass Effect that has any noticeable load times, but I already heard that it doesn't reduce ME's load times either.
BananaBoat @ Nov 17th 2008 11:46PM
Games that weren't designed to be run from the HDD probably wouldn't see any improvement. I don't have any data to back that up, but it makes sense if you think about it.
Premature ejaculation man @ Nov 18th 2008 12:11AM
I'm willing to bet that there will be a new logo appearing on future games "Optimised for Install" or "Optimised for HDD" and games will run faster =)
Sackolantern PSN ID: johnnynumber5 @ Nov 18th 2008 12:49AM
"It's not worth 6 gigs out of a 20gb hard drive, but the silence is nice"
It's not worth 6 gigs out of a 13gb hard drive, but the silence is nice.
Fixed.
We all know these drives aren't as big as portrayed. We need standardization because it's borderline false advertising to call a 234 Gb HDD a 250 Gb HDD.
PhydeWice @ Nov 18th 2008 1:27AM
@ sackolantern:
It's the exact same thing with computer hard drives. You'll never get the full space that it says on the box. Buy a 120GB drive and you'll get about 110GB of usable space. The rest is used for formatting and other stuff.
Sackolantern PSN ID: johnnynumber5 @ Nov 18th 2008 1:32AM
PhydeWice
It has nothing to do with formatting and other issues. The fact of the matter is that manufacturers are using their numbers deceptively. Read Below to more well informed. I'm not saying it's just a 360 HDD issue. It's most if not all HDD's in general. It needs to stop.
From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte
Since 2001, most consumer hard drives are defined by their gigabyte-range capacities. The true capacity is usually some number above or below the class designation. Although most manufacturers of hard disks and Flash disks define 1 gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes, the computer operating systems used by most users usually calculate a gigabyte by dividing the bytes (whether it is disk capacity, file size, or system RAM) by 1,073,741,824. This distinction is a cause of confusion, as a hard disk with a manufacturer rated capacity of 400 gigabytes may have its capacity reported by the operating system as only 372 GB, depending on the type of report.
The difference between units based on SI and binary prefixes increases exponentially — in other words, an SI kilobyte is nearly 98% as much as a kibibyte, but a megabyte is under 96% as much as a mebibyte, and a gigabyte is just over 93% as much as a gibibyte. This means that a 500 GB hard disk drive would appear as "465 GB". As storage sizes get larger and higher units are used, this difference will become more pronounced.
bliks @ Nov 17th 2008 11:16PM
Ahh, well this sucks, I left my 360 at my friends house last night... I'm pretty sure I can wait till tomorrow though
Levi @ Nov 17th 2008 11:16PM
Oh my god, I saw "0 Comments," and the first thing I thought of, was, well, "first!!"
WTF have the trolls here done to me.. Damn you, trolls...
Mike @ Nov 17th 2008 11:17PM
I know it's a small thing to be upset by, but is anyone else bothered by the fact that they changed the color of green in the pop up notifications? You know, like in the "achievement unlocked" pop up, around the "X" to the left? Bothered the hell out of me. Otherwise, I love the NXE - especially Netflix
Al2x @ Nov 17th 2008 11:18PM
I "tryed" to sign up, but then it said "Object unavailable" or something like that. Gonna boot up and see if it'll let me on.
Al2x @ Nov 17th 2008 11:19PM
Nope, no NXE. I'll try tomorrow morning.
007craft @ Nov 17th 2008 11:21PM
same error for me when I tried to sign-up. lamers. Oh well, 1 more day no big deal
Al2x @ Nov 17th 2008 11:25PM
@007:
For sure. I can wait a day, I probably won't notice the NXE until I get out of being wrapped up in Gears 2. I just did the beginning of Act IV "Hive", for those that have done it, it was pretty damn surreal. AWESOME sequel.
Gun Barrier @ Nov 17th 2008 11:19PM
This updated interrupted my team deathmatch on COD: WaW and disconnected me. But it was awesome!
Dr. @ Nov 17th 2008 11:21PM
I got it last week, and yes it's awesome.
The_Punisher @ Nov 17th 2008 11:23PM
It's a day, can we seriously not wait? It's not MGS4 or anything >.
rTwelve @ Nov 17th 2008 11:23PM
Judging by the comments so far, the majority of Joystiq readers signed up anyway it seems, so their slip doesn't matter that much....
jorgiex @ Nov 17th 2008 11:24PM
I got mine and I am all set with setup. I love it......!
Nineset @ Nov 17th 2008 11:24PM
Yeah, this is not for everyone. Read the Nelson post. Nice one.
WilhelmThe1st @ Nov 17th 2008 11:29PM
Now that I have the update. I'm torn on what I should upgrade to: 120GB or 60GB Starter Pack. I'm in Canada and the 120GB is $160, the 60GB is $110. I could really use the headset that comes with the
60GB, plus can always use that 3-Month Subscription. But since there's probably only
pfemm @ Nov 18th 2008 9:08AM
you should check around for prices.. (i don't know if it's different for you but) Amazon has a little bit of savings $139.96 for the 120GB and $99.99 for the 60GB starter. with free shipping.
also buy.com has the 120GB for 134.99 w/ free shipping and the 60GB for $96.24 w/ free shipping as well. :)
it's a little cheaper but that's MS points or something :)
capt_carl @ Nov 17th 2008 11:32PM
I've had since Friday. I got in because of the early signup thing posted a few weeks ago.
Dan CiTi @ Nov 17th 2008 11:32PM
And I JUST got it back today JOYSTIQ. Nice job fooling me.
ToRo @ Nov 17th 2008 11:37PM
I hope they don't make you to have an avatar. I bought an Xbox 360. If I wanted useless features in my console I would have gotten a fucking wii.
rTwelve @ Nov 17th 2008 11:38PM
Sorry, it's required. Enjoy your subjective fail.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 17th 2008 11:41PM
I didn't like the idea either but when I actually got to make one I kinda liked it. Now excuse me while I go flog myself for saying that.
Jason @ Nov 18th 2008 8:42AM
That's right, video games are serious fucking business!
EZ @ Nov 17th 2008 11:40PM
Just got it!
Looks sweet so far..
Pikachief @ Nov 17th 2008 11:41PM
well i signed up but im unsure if my e-mail adress when through or if it worked or anything :S
said next few hours so i'll check back on my xbox in about 2 hours if its not there oh well :/
but yea i signed up but im unsure if it even went through for some reason
Seroth @ Nov 17th 2008 11:42PM
Damn it! If only I wasn't too lazy to look for my 360 serial number back during sign ups...
n1g2t3s4 @ Nov 17th 2008 11:46PM
I've had it for about a week now. Except for the zippier dashboard, it's a bit of a big meh for me.
16x10 resolution - meh. Can't tell the diff on a 24" LCD monitor, plus it adds black bars to the top and bottom to maintain the aspect ratio.
Avatars - meh. I spent a few minutes creating one and then posing it for a gamer pic snapshot. Haven't seen it again.
Install to Hard Drive - somewhat of a meh. It's not enough of a speed-up to load times to make me consider dropping $140 for a 120 GB hard drive. It does make Mass Effect run a little more smoothly.
Netflix/Video downloads and party gaming/chat - meh. Don't take part in it myself.
At least the dashboard is a lot faster now.
