Rare drops Battletoads, Killer Instinct gags in Banjo-Kazooie
You're going to be seeing this picture circulated a lot in the coming days, so we just wanted to get out in front of it for you. Yes, the above image, which hints at new Battletoads and Jet Force Gemini games, can be found in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. But no, you should absolutely not take that to mean that any of those games are actually coming. It says as much in the image itself, but that won't stop the internet from crushing itself under the weight of its own excitement.
As recently as today, Rare talked about how its next project is going to surprise people. We're not sure that points to a lot of its franchises being revived.
... We can still hope though, right?

didn't Rare specifically say "No more revivals for the foreseeable future?"
I seem to remember it, anyway
rafael @ Nov 17th 2008 5:40PM
more importantly...
JET FORCE GEMINI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Arnon @ Nov 17th 2008 10:36PM
Who says they weren't lying? I mean.. they ARE owned by Microsoft, and we all know how MS keeps secrets underwraps.
But seriously.. you honestly don't think that Rare wouldn't take a glance at doing this?
Only things that I can even think of them making are:
-New Conker
-New JFG
-New Battletoads
-New Killer Instinct
-New Ghoulies
-New Viva Pinata
And when you look at it.. Rare releases about 2 games a year (And don't think they're shovelware because they can crank out games.. they have a lot of teams), so it would only make sense that they would have at least ONE of these for '09.
brighenne @ Nov 17th 2008 12:08PM
Man I want new battletoads.
DemonGSides @ Nov 17th 2008 1:15PM
Jet Force Gemini for me please.
Tiptup300 @ Nov 17th 2008 1:50PM
I'll take one of everything please.
Zertoss @ Nov 17th 2008 2:08PM
I'll take a double portion of what Tiptup's having.
MuToiD_MaN @ Nov 17th 2008 2:31PM
Based on what I've seen of games that aren't Original Battletoads (Battlemaniacs, And Double Dragon, etc.), I DO NOT WANT new Battletoads. Somehow get people to play the original again.
gst @ Nov 17th 2008 8:11PM
Guys, they said "next project" - singular.
Clearly:
Grabbed by the Killer ToadForce Gemini.
And now I'm going to waste the rest of my evening creating a poorly photoshopped mock-up of the box-art for that game.
Omega2k3 @ Nov 19th 2008 12:14AM
Oh shit, I've got to call Gamestop to confirm the new Battletoads on the way!
Burritoclock @ Nov 17th 2008 12:08PM
I'll kinda be glad if they don't bring Battletoads back, they would probably just Crystal Skull the damn thing.
Pudge @ Nov 17th 2008 12:24PM
I believe they would nuke the fridge on that one.
After this laughable attempt at a fun game, there is almost no hope left in me for Rareware
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 17th 2008 2:22PM
nuke the fridge?
Wiinterfang @ Nov 17th 2008 12:10PM
I hope they don't change them too much like Killer Instinct the Card RPG and Jet Force Gemini the First Person Shooter.
MowDownJoe @ Nov 17th 2008 12:15PM
How would changing Jet Force Gemini from a 3rd-person shooter (with platforming elements) to a FPS be a major change? It's just a different camera angle. Admittedly, probably would be awkward to play as Lupus in a first-person perspective.
Wiinterfang @ Nov 17th 2008 12:16PM
Well then Jet Force Gemini the M.M.O.R.P.G.
kaneda @ Nov 17th 2008 12:20PM
You hope they don't change the games too much? Are you referring to the games that they've stated are never going to be made?
Wiinterfang @ Nov 17th 2008 12:21PM
I mean that they don't give the games the Nuts and Bolts treatment.
samfish @ Nov 17th 2008 1:22PM
An FPS Jet Force Gemini would kill my boner forever.
...not even considerable amounts of Viagra could revive it.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Nov 17th 2008 12:12PM
The pong guy there also offers you KI2 tips even in the demo version of Nuts & Bolts.
EMilt @ Nov 17th 2008 12:15PM
Rare is desperate. They haven't had a hit title since the N64 days, and now they're looking for publicity among the gaming public. I'm not saying they won't make any one of theses games mentioned above, I'm just saying they most likely won't be good.
WiredKnight @ Nov 17th 2008 12:19PM
If they're as good as they were back then, we have nothing to worry about.
EMilt @ Nov 17th 2008 12:23PM
lol. Rare isn't as good as they were back then. so I'm worried.
Nigeria @ Nov 17th 2008 12:26PM
Rare weren't that great back in the days either.
Snowblind @ Nov 17th 2008 1:30PM
I really don't understand all the Rare bashing. Are you guys just the bitter Nintendo fanboys? It seems you're not going to be happy no matter what they do.
Kameo and Viva Pinata are both every bit as good as any of the titles they released back in the days of the SNES or N64, the only difference is that they don't have the nostalgia value.
The new Banjo is also a lot of fun. The vehicles were a completely uncessecary addition, and I can understand some being upset about that. But it's still a really good game.
WiredKnight @ Nov 17th 2008 3:58PM
@EMilt
If EA can turn it around, so can Rare.
@Snowblind
The vehicles are what makes the new Banjo so good.
TwEE @ Nov 17th 2008 4:47PM
No Snowblind, Rare has lost it.. Whether its because of Microsoft breathing down their neck (instead of somebody that knows how to make games like Nintendo) or the fact that most (or all) of the old Rare crew left, I don't know. And if Kameo is what passes as a good rare game, then there are no good Rare games..
2PeteShakur @ Nov 19th 2008 10:32AM
C'MON KILLER INSTINCT! MAKE IT HAPPEN PLSSS!!! :)
JCollum @ Nov 17th 2008 12:17PM
Jape? Whaaa? I had to look it up. Man, that's an oldschool word. Like Shakespeare old.
AdmiralSnackbar @ Nov 17th 2008 12:18PM
I fuggin' LOVED Jet Force Gemini. That'd be awesome!
Though Rare is a strange bird these days. I can't say I'm hopeful, maybe they could make some cash by selling the franchises to decent developers?
Mr Khan @ Nov 17th 2008 12:26PM
Sell 'em to High Voltage Studios. They're being called "the new Rare" in Nintendo fan communities anyway
Though HVS is still "untested" since we don't know how The Conduit will do
Burritoclock @ Nov 17th 2008 12:36PM
YES! That's what they SHOULD be doing. MS could farm development out. Let Behemoth make Battletoads and let Monolith make Perfect Dark.
Wiinterfang @ Nov 17th 2008 12:38PM
High Voltage is Overrated, Nintendo fans are just desperate for real games and are too proud to admit SEGA is the one delivering.
Mr Khan @ Nov 17th 2008 12:45PM
I don't know about others, but i quite like the fact that the Wii is the playground of both excellent Nintendo and excellent SEGA games. My two favorite companies anyway. High Voltage just seems intent on filling the cracks (namely high quality western development, something that even i, who greatly favors east over west, need once in a while)
Dirty @ Nov 17th 2008 12:55PM
Those are some wide cracks.
samfish @ Nov 17th 2008 1:11PM
I think High Voltage has a loooong ways to go yet before they can be compared to today's Rare, furthermore the old Rare.
WiredKnight @ Nov 17th 2008 12:19PM
:O
If any of that is true, please let it be JetForce Gemini. Seriously, that was my favorite game from that era. It has a lot of potential if it was brought to current technology.
Norm @ Nov 17th 2008 12:21PM
I'm going to go ahead and call Gamestop to preorder Battletoads, just in case.
[.sm0ke.] @ Nov 17th 2008 2:24PM
I've already preordered 20 copies.
Donald @ Nov 17th 2008 12:22PM
"..." at Ghoulies 2.
Pudge @ Nov 17th 2008 12:25PM
10 bucks says that's the first one they make.
MowDownJoe @ Nov 17th 2008 12:26PM
It's called a "punchline".
why not the LS2LS7? @ Nov 17th 2008 12:29PM
The Ghoulies news will likely make Leafos happy.
Aero @ Nov 17th 2008 12:36PM
The ghoulies line proves that it's just a joke by Rare, but of course because it's in the game it means it's true.
Also they are dropping far too many hints at KI3 for it to be a surprise.
Snowblind @ Nov 17th 2008 1:12PM
Rare have been dropping hints at it for years. They hate the series, it's not happening.
jarhead906 @ Nov 17th 2008 12:39PM
If a sequel to Jet Force Gemini does come about, I pray that Rare makes it a multi-console release and not exclusive to one console, such as the 360 or, for mercy's sake, the Wii.
That was one of the 64's best games (there are a lot by the way).
343 Guilty Fart @ Nov 17th 2008 12:42PM
The headline made me think that Rare was 'dropping' the gags from the game. I thought "they couldn't be that bad could they??"
Mute @ Dec 19th 2008 12:27PM
Hey Rare, any hint at when we will be getting a new Banjo Kazooie game?
Vidikron @ Nov 17th 2008 1:01PM
I personally love the one we have now. I'm addicted to that game. I know a lot of fans and reviewers are whining about the lack of pure platforming, and maybe the game could use some more of it, but I love the vehicle creation system in Nuts & Bolts. I can't even go back and finish Gears 2. N&B pulled me away from everything else. I honestly think most of the whiners aren't giving the game a fair shot.
Superstar90 @ Nov 17th 2008 1:08PM
I love the vehicle system, but I wish they kept all Kazooie's abilities :P
And just the other day, I realized how retarded a Bear with a bird in his backpack who can transform into a washing machine was. Oh the good ol' days :D
