Holidaze 2008: Xbox 360 SKU chart, revisited

So, it's with all this in mind that we present you this handy guide for discerning the difference between the various Xbox 360 SKUs out there. Please note that the red, green and yellow coloring is not only festive decor for the holiday season, but a subjective highlight of what each version excels in (or subsequently lacks).

I've got to ask some rhetorical questions, can you help me out ... again?
Of course, it's always fun to talk to yourself.
Awesome! Thanks!
No problem.
Zephyr, Falcon, Jasper and now Valhalla ... Can you explain all these different chipsets? Zephyr is the name given to the first upgrade of the Xbox 360's motherboard, which started showing up in retail consoles July 2007, and sported an HDMI 1.2 port and an improved heatsink.
The Falcon chipset will sport a smaller, 65nm CPU -- theoretically, this means cooler temperatures and less energy usage. This chipset was introduced in September 2007. The Jasper chipset features a shrunken, 65nm GPU and may already be in production. The Valhalla chipset, next in line, is rumored to have just one 65 nm GPU/CPU hybrid superchip.
Except for checking for an HDMI port (included in all Zephyr and later chipsets), there is no easy way to tell which chipset you have.
Why not?
Because Microsoft isn't interested in telling you, that's why.
Okay, fine, but how do I tell if my Xbox 360 console has an HDMI port?
All Elite, Halo Edition, and Arcade models come equipped with HDMI ports because they were manufactured after Zephyr was introduced. The Pro and Core models all have HDMI if they were produced after July 2007, and the best and only way to tell is by looking at the box (see the picture to the right).
What if I'm buying my Xbox 360 used and I can't check the box?
Then you can look at the console itself. An HDMI port should be found under the giant proprietary A/V port. Use the picture below for reference.

Why isn't the Core or Arcade model backwards compatible?
A hard drive is required for backwards compatibility, both for holding the emulation software and to act as a storage space for original Xbox games to use (remember, the original Xbox always had a hard drive). It's important to remember that if you buy an Arcade or Core SKU and want it to be backwards compatible (or just store more than 256 MB), all you need to do is buy a hard drive from Microsoft.
Will the New Xbox Experience come pre-installed on my console?
Doubtful, although at this point we don't know about consoles shipped to retailers after the November 19th NXE launch.

Protip: Click on a phrase on the image above to see the related video
Do I need a hard drive for New Xbox Experience?
No, but you need at least a 512MB memory card. If you bought a used Core model (it must be Core and not just a console you bought without a hard drive), you are eligible for a free 512MB card or a discounted 20GB HDD. Click here for more details.
I bought a new Xbox 360 and want to transfer my old games to it. Is that possible?
There are a few ways to do this. If you bought a separate 120GB HDD, you can use the bundled data transfer kit. If you bought an Elite, you can ask for a transfer kit from Microsoft for free.
The other tool is a license transfer kit, which requires you to go to the Xbox website and enter your new console ID and serial number. You will have to then re-download everything, but the content will then work on your system even if you're not connected to the interwebs. Save files will have to be transferred via memory card, though.

I wish there was an option to get the Arcade in black cuz it looks better next to all the other electronics. I'll be picking up one for downstairs so I can stream Netflix and Media Center to the living room.
I'm loving the NXE right now even tho I've only had a couple of hours to play around with it.
My Avatar is at work relaxing and waiting to get back to da fun ... he's pretty happy that my launch console has made it to 3 years and one heck of a software update. Good job, MS :)

Spray paint
JerkfacedFed @ Nov 19th 2008 12:36AM
Forget spray paint, change the faceplate to a black one. The sides are dark gray, you would only notice the top if you were to look over it. Under a TV in a rack, it would look just like an elite.
T @ Nov 18th 2008 12:23PM
See, now that makes sense. Currently 3 SKUs, wth only one discontinued. (2 if you count the 20GB Pro and 60GB Pro as seperate consoles)
Each SKU is easily identified by its HDD size...as opposed to some random assortment of features that have been dropped, brought back, then dropped again.
Sony really needs to learn from this.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Nov 18th 2008 12:35PM
3 discontinued if you count the original Xbox 360 non-Core. And you pretty much have to, it's not like it didn't exist.
Also, dropping the non-HDMI variants is odd. They sure aren't the same SKUs. Ask anyone who has tried to sell theirs used, they aren't treated the same. Ask anyone who ever sent their unit back to MS for repair, did they get one back that had HDMI to replace their non-HDMI (or vice-versa)? Nope. MS doesn't consider them the same.
To be honest, the biggest differentiator in 360s is the HDMI port. Anything else can be added on (hard drive, wireless controller) later. (And no, I don't count the MadCatz adapter because it performs poorly).

DigDug @ Nov 18th 2008 1:23PM
12 SKU's if you use the same rules Joystiq applied to PS3 SKUs..
However we all know, you don't use the same rules when doing that, as it makes the 360 look sh1t.
Mark Perkins @ Nov 18th 2008 1:51PM
Sony only has the 80 gig and the 160 gig out though.
Ignatius @ Nov 18th 2008 2:01PM
The only major change between the Core and original Premium were hardware revisions (die shrinks and such) and HDMI inclusion. Sony's consoles changed drastically to a point of where a lot of features were dropped or modified.
HDMI isn't THAT big of an issue compared to say, backwards compatibility, or a card reader. Component works just fine for most people.
Heyyou27 @ Nov 18th 2008 2:14PM
Ignatius
I care a lot more about HDMI than backwards compatibility because neither of my TVs supports 1080p through component, and I'd be losing HDCP as well.
007craft @ Nov 18th 2008 2:19PM
yeah its basically
Elite - 120GB hdd
Pro - 60GB hdd
Arcade - 512mb memory card
Very simple. theres no reason to want to seek out and own an old core, All you need to know is what i posted above, buy the newest model and your good.
With sony however, its all messed up, older console have some feature better then the new consoles, like backwards compatibility and card readers. Its not like I can just go and pick the newest sony model with hdd size of my choice. No.. instead I got to hunt down older systems if I want to play ps2 games or use other discountinued features.
If there were 1000 skus it does not matter, If should just be the newest sku has everything and more. There should be no reason an electronics product gets worse over time. ITs just dumb. Sorta like my linksys rounter (wrt54g). They made it so v 2-3 = best while later, newer version are worse in some aspects (ie, cant use custom firmware). The ps3 is doing the same thing
why not the LS2LS7? @ Nov 18th 2008 4:57PM
Only two features were dropped from PS3 that you can't get back:
SACD (no one cares)
BC (lots of people seem to care)
Other than that, you're talking about USB ports and card readers, both of which can be cured by dropping $15 on a card reader or USB hub at the local store.
Deezul @ Nov 18th 2008 12:30PM
If you're going to differentiate Core and Arcade, you should put up both version of the Pro/Premium, at at least note the different in HD sizes. Something like "20 GB before August 2008," since you do note the HDMI difference.

If I buy an Arcade, can I get a cheap HDD?
deaftly @ Nov 18th 2008 12:44PM
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/hardware/memoryupdate/default.htm
Indeed.
Wiinterfang @ Nov 18th 2008 12:49PM
Really? Cool =D, seems Like I know what I'm going to get this holiday.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Nov 18th 2008 12:55PM
If by cheap you mean $30.
I bet you can do better on eBay.
FraGNeM @ Nov 18th 2008 1:54PM
You can't upgrade your Arcade unit from MS's program, or else they don't intend for you to.
The Arcade unit comes with a 512MB memory card, capable of storing the NXE data. The original 360 Core model, however, only came with a 64MB memory card -- this is why Microsoft is allowing Core owners an easy path to upgrade.
Wiinterfang @ Nov 18th 2008 1:56PM
I find 30 to be pretty cheap, anyway, so Can I or Can't I upgrade cheaply my Arcade? :(
run n gun 26 @ Nov 18th 2008 5:21PM
From what I know, if you have the Arcade, then you are only eligible for the $30 hard drive option which is what you want.
HappyFunBall @ Nov 18th 2008 6:18PM
@FraGNeM
You can get the $30 HDD with 3 months LIVE with an Arcade unit. I got my Arcade unit in September and qualified for this deal.
And the Arcade comes with a 256MB card, not 512.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Nov 18th 2008 12:32PM
You left out the 20GB Pro versus 60GB Pro.
You listed the 160GB PS3 and the 80GB PS3 even though they are only different by hard drive size? Why did you collapse 360 SKUs?
You also left out the first SKU that was discontinued, the Premium (er, non-Core). That unit was responsible for perhaps half of total 360 sales and it's left off.
Contra666 @ Nov 18th 2008 12:32PM
The core console came with the same Xbox LIVE Gold trials that all of the other consoles did/do.
Ethan @ Nov 18th 2008 12:33PM
The pro is quite clearly the sweet spot. They need to sort out internal wireless or bring down the price of the adapter though.
Ignatius @ Nov 18th 2008 1:55PM
The Elite should have the WiFi built in, although it would be a hell of a bonus for the Premium.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 18th 2008 12:41PM
Woah, way to go and confuse people, Stiq! lol Theres only 3 SKUs. Its safe to say that any 360 you go out and buy *NEW* at a big retailer will be a solid running console. I think even the soccer moms can see that the console they want for their kiddos is the Arcade.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Nov 18th 2008 12:57PM
The Arcade makes even less sense now than before. The NXE takes up half your memory card.
The Arcade is as trap, it's just there to get you to get you in the door and realize you need to buy more stuff. That and to replace your core unit when it dies.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 18th 2008 1:00PM
Except, don't they have some sort of solution for that now? Cheap 20G HDDs? Free 512M memory cards? I seem to remember hearing something about that.
ExMcCloud @ Nov 18th 2008 1:10PM
Yes major confusement going on here....lol.....But Fenixx sorry I couldnt play with u the other day I was just finishing Insane....Im done with that now so we can MP all day yo!
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 18th 2008 1:23PM
Do this!
why not the LS2LS7? @ Nov 18th 2008 5:00PM
Free 512M cards are only for Core buyers, not Arcade.
20GB HDDs are $30 for Arcade ($20 for Core). That's not super expensive, but it's not cheap.
Even if you like the $30 price, that makes a useful Arcade to be $229, which is about halfway to a Pro.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Nov 18th 2008 5:56PM
Sorry. Free 256M cards. Which turn into 128M cards with the NXE.
deaftly @ Nov 18th 2008 12:45PM
I HIGHLY doubt anyone is going to see any Halo 360's lying around, the overstock was buried next to the ET cartridges in the desert.
Shignami @ Nov 18th 2008 12:49PM
I thought those prices were different, isn't the Pro like $259 or something?
deaftly @ Nov 18th 2008 12:51PM
Yep!

Badboy1979 @ Nov 18th 2008 1:07PM
The old Pros with the 20GB hard drives are on sale at some places for $259.99. I believe all the 60GB ones are regularly priced at $299.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 18th 2008 12:58PM
How about a box on that chart for pack-in software?

xbox.com has it: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/compare101.htm
why not the LS2LS7? @ Nov 18th 2008 12:59PM
Didn't the Halo edition have an HDMI cable?
I think it also had the optical audio out cable, like the Elite and unlike every other model. Unless you have HDMI audio, you're gonna need one of those cables to get audio out of your console when you use HDMI (although some dude on the net has a physical hack to get around this).
Hala Madrid!! (THE BIRD IS THE WORD!!) @ Nov 18th 2008 1:17PM
You don't need additional cables when you use HDMI.
Ignatius @ Nov 18th 2008 1:57PM
You will need the additional dongle to get optical sound out to a separate home theater system. I use it for my Pioneer HTS-GS1.
deaftly @ Nov 18th 2008 2:17PM
all you need is a screwdriver actually
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FptCB_3DOz4
Wyvernlink @ Nov 18th 2008 1:08PM
Off topic, addressing the install feature in NXE, can you take one disk and install it onto a couple 360s so that you could play system link even if you only have one disk?
Badboy1979 @ Nov 18th 2008 1:17PM
Nope... disk has to be in the drive at all times.
DBoyFlex @ Nov 18th 2008 1:23PM
You could install the game on an infinite number of consoles with the same disk, but a disk must be in the drive in order to run the game, so it is pointless really to install the same exact disk on multiple xboxes cause you need multiple copies of the game to play anyways.
Hyams @ Nov 18th 2008 1:24PM
No. You need the disc in the console for it to run.
DBoyFlex @ Nov 18th 2008 1:21PM
I wonder why the elite comes with an older revision of HDMI. They are currently at 1.3. I know the difference is minimal, but some may care. You can find them online for CHEAP. I bought 10 ft 1.3 rev. for 2 bucks the other day, amazing quality. Anyways, just anote for those who are in the market. 1.3 is technically the latest revision. But then again, the ethernet cables are older as well. I guess maybe a way to get rid of older stuff.
Ignatius @ Nov 18th 2008 1:57PM
1.3b is the current revision, just to be clear.
DBoyFlex @ Nov 18th 2008 2:27PM
right. Even more exact.
