To all you saying "I have 4 accounts", Sony says "active" accounts for a reason. They are active. I have 4 accounts. I only use one. I log on in the other ones like maybe once a week or in 2 weeks. Hardly considered active.

Maybe sony thinks you have multiple active accounts you don't know what they see as active. neither does anybody else here

Rofl.

That's not what active means in this sense. Active means that the accounts are not cancelled. It doesn't mean that they're participating in daily things.

I didn't like RESISTANCE2 nearly as much as I enjoyed the first one... hence the reason why I'm on LITTLE BIG PLANET nearly all the time since signing on. On my friends list, most of them seem split between LBP, VALKYRIA CHRONICLES, WIPEOUT HD, and COD4.

Still awaiting the sOLiD SNAKE Sackboy too. :\

The Japanese PSN store is overflowing with PSX games, but there's surprisingly little Japan-exclusive PS3 content. The PS3 is no where near the PS2's level of Japan-exclusive games. That may be because the PS3 is relatively young, but right now the Wii seems to be getting more of the "only-in-Japan" games, leaving the PS3 with just the impressive but few and far between big-budget blockbusters.

Look, 80% of the account are probably not really active in the way we would describe as active, but it's a free online service to play your games. (Almost) anyone with an online capable game and an internet connection is going to play it online now and then. I think it's safe to assume that the number is probably pretty high.

I am sure they have stats on how many people are online at any one time. They should publish these much like Valve does with Steam.

Wow. Sony makes a harmless comment about number of active PSN accounts, and Joystiq twists it into flamebait?

Not sure why you are surprised, the hate for Sony is pretty strong on this board. Not sure what Sony did to their mother but it had to be pretty bad, right?

Among the site's comments section maybe, I usually find Joystiq itself to be pretty even-handed; some writers obviously have their favorite systems, but the site as a whole doles out the hurt evenly and usually when it is deserved.

This, however, is taking one kind of statistic and trying to turn it into another thing entirely.

With Sony's lax region protection and sharing ability, most PS3 owners have multiple accounts so they can pick up exclusive/early content in the other regions' PSN stores each week, or have a dedicated sharing account so they can spread their games among 4 others and also get to use those people's games. Trying to take this number of active accounts (without even knowing the criteria for 'active') and using it with the total number of PS3s out there is pointless and has no hope of being accurate unless it comes from Sony itself (and even then it could be dubious).

The PS3 is my choice this generation (out of a lack of time and money; i would like to have all three and all the great games among them), but even I call bullshit on this.

@Genius

Sony used to touch them at night. play hide the pickle at bed time. It's a shame :(

Anything SONY : Playstation is an instant target for diarrhea of the mouth..... aka talking out of their ass.

Of course LIVE is better then PSN........ YOUR PAYING FOR IT. It should be flawless and sing to you and compliment your good looks everytime you push the power button.

Playstation gets shitted on for trying to appeal to people. you just paid $400-$600 wouldnt you want a break from having to pay to use their Network on top of paying for internet on top of paying for a game? Let them start nickel and dime-ing you Like MS does and see what everyone cries about then.

And dont start with "IF IT ACTUALLY WORKED I WOULD TOTALLY PAY FOR IT" cuz iam not buying that shit.

Its ok to be a blind Fanboy but to be a ignorant moron is another story.

P.s Gears is Geay i'm sorry. i read someone bring it up earlier.... Steriod infused homo erotica........ SOUNDS LIKE fUn.

Dude, shut up; it hurts my soul to know that I'm on the same side as people like you.

And for the record, Live isn't better because you pay for it, it's better because it had a four year head start. Live is a glorified matchmaking service, you aren't even paying for dedicated servers.

Thanks for including the time that I update...seemingly the only time I ever get on PSN. They should really try to make update times comparable with the 360; the difference is ridiculously bad.

They should give stats per game/shopping/browsing/updating/whatever.

What really count's here is that 80% of PSN users can actually play online for free! Unlike 360's XBox Live users.

It's a shame Micrsoft will never admit to what percentage are Gold or Silver users! The day XBox Live is made free for all steps another day closer. ;)

What's with all the Sony hate in the comments? Sony just reported the number of active accounts. You people make it sound like it's a ridiculous statement that anyone plays on PSN at all. I play on PSN and XBL all the time, and guess what? There are lots of people on both. PSN and XBL are both good systems, and PSN is especially good because I don't have to cut it a check every month.

For some reason I always read people on here trashing the PS3 saying "PSN is free, but you can't find anyone to play with". I've never had a problem finding games with anyone on Rock Band or even the first Resistance Fall of Man. The only console game I have trouble finding people to play with is Smash Brothers Brawl surprisingly enough. I just sit there hitting that punching bag for like 15 minutes before it finally pairs me with people.

Can't say I've had that problem either, so I take no notice of the individuals that make those claims, they are the same people who sit down and analyse a game on both consoles to see if one has 1 more pixel then the other and hail one the best instead of gaming for fun and going outside.

Doubt it matters whether they are multi or not, or what Sony said and what Joystiq didn't say, either way you look at it its good news, I'd hate to think that even with multiple accounts only 20% of PS3 owners were online.

This could only be bad news to a fanboy

My bets are that sony is classifying an "ACTIVE" account as an account that has logged in recently......which is automatic when you power up pretty much. I haven't done a ton with my accounts from day 1 save for the occasional dabbling in Playstation Online gaming which tends to be more a trying of my patience than fun.

I opened a PSN account but i haven't use it in a while for anything like online gaming or buying stuff.

My xbox 360 gets the most of online gaming and $money$ on DLC like games, movies....etc

And for the Wii goes WOW i haven't touch it since SSBB came out wow that's a long time.

1) talking about the 360 on sony.com forums is not allowed, so when i goto sony.com it is usually going to be sony product related.
2) i never bashed the ps2 in the past.
3) i have the right to bash the ps3
4)joystiq.com is a gaming forum, not a ps3 or sony website.
5) keep thinking your not a forum troll too if you want to call me one. when you go onto 360 related discussions and reply to people's comments and give your 2 cents about the ps3 what do you call that in your terms?
6) why do you care that i bash the ps3? or anybody for that matter? you are always defending the ps3 on joystiq.com or at least what cc would call anti-360.
7) why mine and others opinions about the ps3 bother you to the point that you need to defend the ps3 to the levels and lengths that you do (length meaning time spent and length of your replies)
8) when somebody gives their opinion about a corporation or product, that is an opinion against a non-real thing, just a product.
not everybody is going to agree with you.
9) i even explained how i based my comments and you still felt the need to keep going... hmm...
i hope you defend your family to the lengths that you defend the ps3. geez take it easy.
i gave my opinion about sales and you could have said you dont agree and gave your own opinion. however it doesnt seem like you have one on the subject. all you can do is hate on a person, when that person is only commenting on a product.
pretty weak.
johnny in the past when i felt that i made a mistake on the forum i was honest and even apologized to you and someone else, i am pretty down to earth with my comments and explaining the from my opinion.
but really whats the deal with hating so much on comments about products (ps3), when an opinion is given why cant you just give an answer?
if you actually had an answer i would take that into account.
but when you troll me and my opinion (i even explained how this was my opinion when asked) that turns it more personal and off topic.

Wow. Some people like flamewars a little bit too much. I reckon cc and sk8 are both wanking as they argue. See boys, you have something in common after all. As for the topic its clearly because many PS3 owners have multiple PSN accounts on one system.
