It's NXE launch day, and those of us who've been in for a while have been eagerly anticipating seeing everyone's avatars. If you bear a striking resemblance to your newly-minted doppelganger, not only do we want to see it, we want to share it with the world! So, here's what you do.
1. Visit this link, but switch out "XXXXX" with your gamertag.
2. Send a pic of your avatar (not just the link) and a pic of yourself (or both in the same image) to joystiqblog aat gmail dawt com with the subject line "NXE Avatar Contest."
3. Keep checking this gallery to see if you made the cut.
4. Digg the post to further your stardom.
We'll be putting the best look-a-likes up throughout the day. What's the prize, you ask? How about fame, how does that grab you? No? Well then, how about immortality? Yeah, we thought so.
[Update: We've got more images, it's just taking the gallery below a bit to update. So go here and just start clicking through to see everything.
Update 2: Hey gang. The servers seem to be slow, so please don't send us the link to your avatar but rather the actual file. And if you can put them both into one image it'd be a big help.]

You should've just let everyone think you're 12. Still calling things "gay" when you're almost 30 is way more embarrassing.

I just wish you could change the color of the clothes you have. I found a pair of look-a-like chuck t's but they were green and white! my color's usually classic or black and red.

"T" thats what i thought at first too but then i thought bout how alot of the downloaded clothes creators would want to make a certain way and i'm sure it isnt worth the trouble programming it so you could have clothes you could change the color of with others you couldnt, but they really should of had download store for avatar clothes avaible day one thats really my biggest problem.

I've gotten a Mii to look exactly like me, not so much for Xbox's avatars. Plus I hate Xbox's avatars. They are perfectly proportioned to maximize the look of stupid.
Is there really a way to go back to just gamer pics, or hide the avatars? I didn't see an option NOT to use an avatar after installing the new dashboard.

When creating an avatar, you don't need to do the step of creating a gamer picture for the avatar. Simply skip over this and your gamer picture will still be there.
I'm not upset by avatars, really, but I would have liked color customization on the clothes, or at the very least the ability to have a shirt with your gamerpic on it.
I must be the last guy in the world clinging to the Torchwood pic.

Yes, I am aware there are still gamer pics. And I am aware I don't have to have a gamer pic of my avatar if I don't want to.
What I want is to not have an avatar. Now I'm going to be forced to spend money on something, anything, that will obfuscate the irritating look of it since I can't opt out of it.
Don't get me wrong, I actually like the idea of having an avatar, I just think what they ended up looking like is...well. Rare worked on it, didn't they?

That's actually the only thing that has been bothering me about the avatars.

I do have mine looking like me, I don't mind the Avatars at all, and I'm a 34 year old gamer. They are far less "kiddie" than the Miis. How would one get the picture from your Xbox to your PC? Just curious...

I haven't been keeping up with this whole thing at all, but every time I see images for it, I can't help but feel unnerved at the fact that all the discussed avatars hold the exact same pose - the stance one takes whilst attempting to coax that errant piece of boxer fabric to drop out of one's ass crack.
