Lips service: First DLC songs coming Friday, Nov. 21

Well, that didn't take long. Lips has been out for all of ... a day, and Microsoft is already at the ready with a supply of add-on songs, which, from the looks of things, will be arriving every Friday from here on out.
This Friday, Nov. 21, will see the arrival of the first DLC songs, followed by another batch on Friday, Nov. 28, and a set of holiday standards by "Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, Gene Autry and more," beginning Friday, Dec. 5. The tracks will be priced "from" 160
and include the original music videos (or, in the case of the holiday tracks, ones created by MS). Here's what to expect for the first two Lips DLC Fridays. Click on the song titles for videos.

LiqwidZero @ Nov 20th 2008 4:07PM
Holy crap! They have Supertramp!
I'm thinking about this, seriously.
Yuccadude @ Nov 20th 2008 4:22PM
That's what I thought as well.
On the pricing. Same price as a Rock Band song? More than new Rock Band songs? Poor choice in my opinion.
(The Award-Winning) dark_inchworm @ Nov 20th 2008 5:18PM
I don't really want to defend the pricing, but for what it's worth, I can almost assure you it'd cost more to license the song *and* video as opposed to just the song itself. And of course, MS and the developer don't want to be left in the cold with no money generated.
(The Award-Winning) dark_inchworm @ Nov 20th 2008 5:19PM
Let me give that "almost" a strong reiteration - there's the possibility that the music video director and crew are only paid one flat fee for the video, and the artist uses it freely after that. Unfortunately, I don't know precisely how the recording industry operates in that respect, so your guess here is as good as mine.
Eric @ Nov 20th 2008 4:11PM
Wait, Vanessa Carlton, Coldplay, and Jason Mraz? My sister is going to love this game.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 20th 2008 4:17PM
Pretty much across-the-board awful. Those mics sure are purdy though.
Haggard @ Nov 20th 2008 4:22PM
I saw "A thousand miles" and briefly thought of The Proclaimers, sadly it was not to be :(
Viridium @ Nov 20th 2008 4:31PM
Maybe A Thousand Miles would be TWICE the awesome though!
Titanium_Orchid @ Nov 20th 2008 4:59PM

jpw21683 @ Nov 20th 2008 5:46PM
@Haggard: "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers is ALREADY ON THE DISC.
No need to be sad!
Haggard @ Nov 20th 2008 6:54PM

billy @ Nov 20th 2008 4:33PM
YES! Adele is amazing, i am listening to her now haha and I have my own version in the section
eric @ Nov 20th 2008 4:25PM
wow much better so far then singstar not as many songs but there stuff people know
Mr. Nosuch @ Nov 20th 2008 4:26PM
Now how about a patch to disable the annoying and loud menu music? I think the people who made this game must have gouged their own ears out with icepicks in order to ship something so irritating.
The mics are pretty, but only Microsoft would find a way to screw up the usability on something so simple. How about a dedicated "link" button instead of overloading the on/off switch? How about a dedicated on and battery light, instead of having to decode top sekret color coded and timed flashing?
And the game will let you start without either mic linked and/or on, which is easy to accidentally do.
The fun of this game is hampered quite a bit by some bad hardware and software design gaffs.
Joe @ Nov 20th 2008 4:34PM
Wait, can't you plug in an mp3 player and have the game create tracks out of your songs? That makes this incredibly redundant and unnecessary.
Plus, two bucks for a karaoke track when you can get a full Rock Band track for that is way too much.
Haggard @ Nov 20th 2008 6:58PM
Copyright laws, technical reasons and the draw of profits through DLC mean that could probably never happen.
I agree with your second point and the sentiment though.
Haggard @ Nov 20th 2008 7:14PM
Ok, I completely fail at reading comprehension.
Disregard everything I've said.
Dirk Dorkelson @ Nov 20th 2008 7:24PM
1. When you play your own tracks, it doesn't automatically generate lyrics for you to sing. You already have to know the words.
2. As someone above said, the creators of Rock Band and Guitar Hero presumably have to license the song. The creators of Lips have to license the song and the video.
Brandon @ Nov 20th 2008 4:31PM
To all dudes: A lesson learned from my many years experience in a relationship - DO NOT buy your girlfriend/wife a video game for Christmas. No matter how much it falls in their line of interest. I don't care if it's a Martha Stewart Baking simulation. They don't want it. Here's what girls want:
Uggs
Jewlery
Clothes
Gift Certificates
Items that interest them outside of video games.
In short, think about the purchase. Is it something that will ultimately benefit you in the end? i.e. are you buying her a video game so you can spend more time playing video games?
HazyCloud @ Nov 20th 2008 4:36PM
Well said. I totally agree. The only reason I'm thinking about getting it for her is she had me go out and buy Karaoke Revolution: American Idol for her and she loves it.
Ordeith @ Nov 20th 2008 5:02PM
You know there are women out there that LIKE video games, and will buy you one in the hopes that THEY get to play..
Brandon @ Nov 20th 2008 5:09PM
Either way - the point of gift giving is to make the other person happy, not yourself. Believe me, after five straight Christmases of buying stuff for me - for my girlfriend - it finally sunk in.
It's like that Family Guy where Peter buys Lois the Galaga cabinet and instantly starts playing it. Or when Homer buys Marge the bowling ball with his name on it.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Nov 20th 2008 6:06PM
I agree with that statement whenever normal women are involved. For female geeks however, good luck with clothes, jewelry and gift certificates.
Haggard @ Nov 20th 2008 6:57PM
I've always found it really annoying that just giving people money is not an acceptable gift (unless it's in a christmas card for a child/teenager), whilst buying people gift certificates is fair game.
Thank you for this money which I can only spend in one shop! And here I was thinking you'd be lame and give me money I can spend in every shop!
Haggard @ Nov 20th 2008 6:59PM
oh yeah, and +1 for the guy with the pink floyd avatar.
A band that are conspicuously absent from any music games *WINK WINK HARMONIX WINK WINK*
Dirk Dorkelson @ Nov 20th 2008 7:23PM
I went the opposite route once. I asked for a game I thought my g/f (now wife) would like to be given to me for Christmas. Don't get me wrong, I had fun with Viva Pinata, but she loved it.
FSK405K @ Nov 20th 2008 4:55PM
Uh, nice job Lips DLC executives, you really picked the one Smash Mouth song everyone wants. Yea. [sarc]
Dirk Dorkelson @ Nov 20th 2008 7:27PM
I predict that one day, a fascist regime will use the list of people who bought "All-Star" as DLC as a starting point for rounding up all the people with bad taste and putting them on a bus to Orlando, Fla., where they'll never be heard from again.
aStagnantSleep (GT:StoneRevolver) @ Nov 20th 2008 4:57PM
Ok, so where's the music?
Ken Seang @ Nov 20th 2008 5:00PM
I thought one of the main factor of lips is to be able to take songs from your ipod or zune and turn them into playable songs.... Why DLC?
Ordeith @ Nov 20th 2008 5:35PM
Lyrics
Note Charts
Video
Ordeith @ Nov 20th 2008 5:36PM
That said - MS will miss the oportunity to license the music videos in such a way that they can be synced back to the Zune, and that will be a shame.
For the price they should seriously find a way to make that happen.
Mr. Nosuch @ Nov 20th 2008 5:10PM
DLC contains videos and lyrics for the song. If you use your own songs, no lyrics, no custom video.
Mr. Nosuch @ Nov 20th 2008 5:13PM
To all dudes: A lesson learned from my many years experience in a relationship - Pick a girlfriend/wife that likes video games, so you'll have one more thing in common. Bonus if she actually likes just watching games and helping with walkthroughs.
I got her Lips last night and she was delighted. YMMV, of course.
The Aggie CEO @ Nov 20th 2008 5:16PM
so ummmmmmm yea.....I take it that the DLC has a Video or something as well..........else why by Songs for something you can simply get from an MP3 player........which can easily be music you never paid for
M. @ Nov 20th 2008 5:18PM
Way to encourage copyright infringement, 'stiq.
dangcucu @ Nov 20th 2008 8:58PM
we got the "game" Lips & we both love it. only negative we both found is the Voice Reduction (off, Soft, Hard) it doesn't truly make a difference & there's no option to remove the song vocals or lower it manually like karaoke revolution. your voice will be louder but we like turning it off... oh well, we're loving it. uploading the songs from the mp3 is nice feature that turns things fresh right away. wireless mics are the bomb as well. my daughter can't tug the cords anymore!!!! highly recommend. hack Karaoke Revolution Encore for the 360 1st sold for 69.99 with ONE wired mic. but they are totally different games though. Lips is casual & KR brings out the competion. like em both. but i'm quality it edges towards Lips. *(btw; it requires 2 AA batteries per mic//included).
Arnon @ Nov 20th 2008 9:43PM
Pretty cool looking mics lolz
kaiswil2 @ Nov 22nd 2008 1:59AM
This is the kind of horse s*** I was hoping the MS would not do. The damn game is out one day and there is already DLC you have to pay more money to just get a few more songs. When they clearly could have been put on the game disc.
Don't misconstrue that I am not against all DLC. I have bought several items and add-ons for my games but this takes the cake.
Hey MS I'am not a cow so stop trying to milk me.
