Well that's a hell of a time for licensing issues to happen on this particular day.

lol how is it "Not specific to Xbox" when it is specifically Xbox users that can't watch the movies? Every other platform can play them, so ya, it is Xbox specific.

Sony must be run by republicans

Well bacon does have considerable fat storage capabilities. So if Sony was able to store data on fat deposits, we could have a very delicious next generation of gaming.

"Not specific to Xbox", which is why the error message says "Not available on Xbox".

No, wait, what he meant was that it *is* specific to a device, but it's a licensing issue and not that the device just happens to be a "Microsoft Xbox."

Isn't that right, Sony?

*ahem* I said, "Isn't that RIGHT, Sony?"

Sony?

Just for the record, I'm still giving them the benefit of the doubt. We've heard way back when Microsoft was releasing the Video Marketplace how complicated licensing deals are. I'm sure some paperwork got fouled up somewhere. Especially since "Sony Pictures" movies are fine. This will *probably* get resolved quickly without much fuss.

Unless the head of Columbia really is a PS3 fanboy. ;)

I am sure it will get resolved as well, it is the timing that stinks of fowl play though. This occurred the day before the NXE dropped all the while up to that point these movies played fine. I even had a couple queued up without error myself. (I had signed up for the beta and although I wasn't accepted, I was let in 2 days early.) I believe that Sony waited until this point to try and smear the launch if even a little bit.

I would have given them the benefit of the doubt if I couldn't watch Bad Boys when I was in the preview program. Lawyers go over everything with a fine tooth comb. If Netflix couldn't do it, we wouldn't have been able to view the movies.

I think this is Sony threatening future supply and licensing like they did to Sega during the Dreamcast days. They had retailers put the Dreamcast stuff in the back of the stores, or no or fewer Playstation shipments. Extortion, basically.

Hey, genius, take a good look at your available movies. See the SONY PICTURES films on the list?

It's an issue specific to Columbia Pictures, which just happens to be owned by Sony. Don't you think that ALL Sony-owned studios would be unavailable if they were doing this just to rain on Microsoft's parade?

Logic. I'm assuming you have it. Use it.

Maybe columbia's contractual obligations were up, and being owned by Sony removing the movies was a natural decision? and maybe the other companies from Sony are in an active contract?

May or may not be correct, but you can't just break a contract without (usually harsh) repercussions, so most businesses won't.

You can't just remove your company and subsidiary ones on a whim's notice unless it's in a contract, which i highly doubt something like this would be.

If you want to jump on someone for logic, think a little deeper yourself first. Could be many reasons why this really happened.

As a intellectual property law student, I can comment that this is obviously an attempt to stifle XBox-
The reason is Sony fears that it may be delving into issues of copyright fair use / misuse / and antitrust.
Even though it's lot harder for courts to find those things in issues of copyright (than say patents), I'm sure those issues could still matter here.

"As it turns out, it seems like this is simply a matter of licensing. Given that Sony BMG music is available through the Zune Marketplace and other Sony Pictures Entertainment movies are still available for streaming through Netflix to the 360, this might not be the proverbial middle finger that some assume it is." -- from http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3171396 And you can see it yourself, if you're not too blinded by the fanboy goggles.

X3F are such jackasses for keeping this going. This is why you have zero credibility among GAF and pretty much every other gaming community on the web. All you do is spin, spin, spin.

That's a f'in low blow. X3F haven't "spun" anything, they don't even comment on the situation, they just posted a response by Sony with some back story.

Honestly you're looking way too hard into this. There's a whopping THREE (3) writers at X3F. You expect them to catch everything? They just call it how it is.

You need to spin, spin, spin your way out of here.

No, bias would be understandable; this is Xbox 360 "Fanboy," after all. However, there is no excuse for outright false information (see Dustin Burg's article from a couple of days ago) or ignorance, especially when I submitted the tip just the other day. It reeks of hit-baiting tactics on X3F's part, as others besides myself have pointed out.

Ironically, I'm still giving them hits in order to check replies and defend my position. Heh. This'll be the last time I do that, though, so feel free to flame away with impunity. ;)

Actually X3f IS instigating this. Look at the headline from a few days ago when this story first popped up. "Sony blocks entire Netflix movie library from streaming to the Xbox 360." This is the same kind of Fox News-esque fear mongering to get you riled up and hating Sony.

Oh and to the poster of the "legal advice." You're going to be a terrible lawyer if you think that this matter has anything to do with Antitrust. Are you actually learning law from wikipedia?

Here's a simple lesson in PR.

If you do something that will look nefarious, explain your reasoning behind it. If you do not, opinion will trend towards negative in a big way.

Especially with the timing of it all.

The likely explanation is that the contract from that particular studio was expiring now... Given that netflix will likely gain a huge boost in membership because of this, Sony wants more $$$ to stay in the contract. If they were in negotiation, Sony could have played it as "no new devices can view these movies"... since the XBox is the only new device on the market recently that streams netflix, it would be the only one affected...

The latter scenario isn't nefarious at all... it's just business. The problem is that by not commenting on the real reason, most are going to assume the worst. It's basic human nature.

Its why when you, as a company, fuck up... it's better to be clear about the cause and the fault, otherwise people looking in will assume that maybe you did whatever you did intentionally.

But since it's just a simple licensing agreement that Netflix didn't have with Columbia (IE how many standalone devices they would be streaming movies to) it's not a PR issue at all.

Here's what's going down from a press standpoint. Columbia sees that Netflix is in a sling since they don't have Xbox distro rights to their films, so Columbia is holding out for more money from Netflix. Netflix is "refusing to comment" hoping that the negative backlash will get Columbia to settle for whatever is being offered. THAT'S what is actually going on, and you'll never hear anyone tell you that, and why?

Because it's better for sites like this to get an argument going so that we keep their hits up while checking to see if someone has replied to our postings.

The world doesn't revolve around you. MS doesn't revolve around you- though that's what they tell you. The more so, just rip you off, and you morons are dumb enough to buy into it.

SONY OWNS THE RIGHTS- THEY CAN DO WHATEVER THEY WANT WITH IT.

GET A LIFE- AND ACTUALLY GO OUTSIDE TO A BLOCKBUSTER TO RENT MOVIES YOU MORONS.

Concurring here. You all *really* need to see Paprika. Even the five court ladies danced in sync to the frog's flutes and drums. The whirlwind of recycled paper was a sight to see. It was like computer graphics. That I don't support Technicolor parfaits and snobby petit bourgeois is common knowledge in Oceania! Now is the time to return home to the blue sky! The confetti will dance around the shrine gates. The mailbox and the refrigerator will lead the way! Anyone who cares about expiration dates will not get in the way of the glory train! They need to fully realize the liver of the triangle rulers! Now, this festival was decided by the third grade class with the telephoto camera! Move forward! Come together! I am the ultimate governor!
