Xbox 360 sells over 7 million in Europe
Microsoft has recent price drops and an aggressive marketing campaign to thank for its latest success in Europe, with Xbox 360 sales surging past 7 million in the region. The system previously reached the six-million milestone in September. The veep of strategic marketing for Xbox in EMEA, David Gosen, seemed pleased with the results and used the word "fantastic" a lot.
"We're in a position now where we've sold over seven million consoles in EMEA, which puts us in a fantastic place versus PlayStation 3," he told MCV. It's the combination of elements that put us in a fantastically strong position. We have 360 degrees of entertainment. At the moment, momentum is fantastic, we've got real traction in all European market."
Gosen went on the extend his confidence to the forthcoming holiday period, predicting it to be "the best ever Christmas in the history of Xbox." So, pretty fantastic then.

If it were just a shooter console nothing else on there would crack 500K but low and behold nearly everything passes the 500k mark. Come up with a new spin Sony fanboys and this time make it sound more believable.
Stew @ Nov 20th 2008 6:55PM
You would have to be a moron to believe the tripe they spew.
In Europe, the PS3 has outsold the 360 in total sales. How can that be great, you launched 18months earlier, and your lead has evaporated.
Clearly there are plenty of idiots here ready to suck up any press release Microsoft come up with, as gospel truth. It's laughable.
Doug @ Nov 20th 2008 7:43PM
@Stew
According to WIkipedia (which is ALWAYS right) your figures are off by about... 2 million. Get a better calculator :D.

The most superb console with the most superb games and superb controller with the most superb online... I got one word to sum it all up..... fantastic.
colinbell @ Nov 20th 2008 2:09PM
"best online service, best feature set, best price"
BIG contradiction here
The middle 360 model is $100 cheaper - but has NO multiplayer. If you take multiplayer - and you find the Gears lagfest and host advantage superior - it costs you $300 over 6 years (if the 360 lasts that long, of course), thats $200 extra over PS3.
"best games library"
Xbots keep claiming that 360 has more games. AND they are right (more RPGs in particular). But here is the funny part - they dont care about all those games. All that sells are shooters, crappy generic ones like Lost Planet or Halo 3. Sales of Lost Odyssey + Blue Dragon + Mass effect + Kameo + Ace Combat 6 + Viva Pinata = Sales of MGS4 alone on PS3. Here is a tip: dont tell us about "best games library", buy some of them.
"best exclusives"
Enjoy Gears while it lasts. There aint anything more coming for a long time.
Jtenma @ Nov 20th 2008 2:20PM
There is still Alan Wake though if I remember correctly. Where is that game anyway?
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 20th 2008 2:23PM
Hey look its colinbell, aka bitter PS3 fanboy who hates 360. Hey buddy, why dont you head over to PS3fanboy.com and see if they updated on any new Bluray releases. FUN!
GTFO!!!
Hyams @ Nov 20th 2008 2:27PM
Jtenma:
I believe Alan Wake will drop in 2009. They recently released a video of the PC build, which you might wanna check out if you're interested in the game.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 20th 2008 2:36PM
Speaking of blu ray releases doesn't the Dark Knight come out soon? I really need to pick that up when it releases.
Dirty @ Nov 20th 2008 2:38PM
Its ok colin. We all get bitter sometimes. Just get an xbox and play some gears with us.. you'll feel better.
Snowblind @ Nov 20th 2008 2:38PM
Pretty ironic post considering how hard LBP flopped. I bet you can't wait for Killzone 2 though?
As for next year, the 360 has at least as many exclusives coming as the PS3 does, and I'm sure there's a few we still don't know about.
Also, if you know nothing about the 360's online abilities, don't bother posting about it. You just make yourself look very foolish.
WRE @ Nov 20th 2008 2:41PM
I second tmac's assertion of needing the Dark Knight on Blu-ray.
Hyams @ Nov 20th 2008 2:46PM
I know I must be sounding like a broken record, but LBP did *not* flop in any way shape or form. It's sold around 750k already, which is pretty damn impressive, especially for a new IP.
You have to remember that most games never make it past 500k for their lifetime sales, and LBP looks set to ultimately sell around 3+ million.
And it's not like 360 games haven't done poorly: Banjo: Nuts and Bolts *did* flop, for example, and it flopped hard. Many multiplatform games have also been struggling a bit: Mirror's Edge, for example, got off to a bit of a slow start too (and, interestingly, is actually selling better on the PS3).
The problem is, the Christmas period is just too damn crowded. People can't afford to buy all the games they want; Gears 2 and CoD:WaW are basically stealing everyone's monies so they can't buy anything else.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 20th 2008 2:47PM
Definately getting Madagascar 2 on Bluray when it releases :) That movie was awesome and even better than the first!
colinbell @ Nov 20th 2008 3:26PM
Wow - state some solid hard facts and xbots get all incensed. Sorry for pawning your xbot "opinions".
And here are some more: LBP sold as many in 3 days as Ninja Gaiden did in its first 2-3 months and more than Lost Odyssey the much-vaunted killer 360 RPG. Thats right, new IP on a platform with a smaller install base. Bet YOU wont feel bitter about LBP, which proves my point - Perfect dark zero would sell more than LBP if it were on the 360 (thats an opinion btw, not fact - not that you could tell the difference)
R @ Nov 20th 2008 3:30PM
Buy some of them? Thats funny. Xbox 360 = highest game attach rate among the 3 current consoles.
So yeah...maybe you and your fanboi friends should help Sonys attach rate instead of trying to BS your way up the food chain.
Vcize @ Nov 20th 2008 3:33PM
"But here is the funny part - they dont care about all those games. All that sells are shooters"
I don't know how many times we have to post that a higher percentage of the top 10 selling PS3 games are shooters than top 10 selling 360 games before you get it through that wee little brain of yours.
Vcize @ Nov 20th 2008 3:46PM
Before it comes up...
PS3 top 10 includes:
GTA4, CoD4, MGS4, Resistance, Uncharted
360 top 10 includes
Halo 3, CoD4, GTA4, Gears
PS3 has 2 racing games, 360 has 1 racing game.
360 has 2 RPGs, PS3 has 0 RPGs.
Both consoles have 1 rhythm game (GH3), both have Assassin's Creed (not sure what genre that goes into), both have 1 sports game.
Duke @ Nov 20th 2008 4:25PM
Damn Colin, your sad moaning just goes on and on. Do you even pay attention to what games exist for these sytems or are you still thinking they have the same library they did 2+ years ago?
Seriously, you call people xbots if they don't agree, but your blindness to reality blows anyone else's blind fanboyism to dust.
xFenixKnightx @ Nov 20th 2008 4:31PM
Go 360!!!
USA! USA! USA! HOOOOOOO!!!!! :P
Evan @ Nov 20th 2008 5:21PM
PS3 fans have no grounds to complain about the 360 being a "shooter only" console, because the PS3 has gone that way too. Certainly the 360 is dominated by hardcore shooter fans who "don't care about those games", but Sony themselves "don't care about those games" - Sony has tried so hard to appeal to the hardcore market by pushing shooters, that they've lost much of the variety that made the PS2 a success.
So, this console generation is completely f-cked up:
- The 360 has more notable non-shooter games, but fewer fans for those games, because Microsoft is trying to become more than a shooter platform but the Xbox fanbase is largely shooter fans who don't care.
- The PS3 has fewer quality non-shooter games, but more fans for those games, because Sony is trying to become a shooter platform but the fanbase carries over from the PS2 which had a better variety of games.
Arnon @ Nov 20th 2008 9:06PM
Um.. it's a proven fact that the 360 has the largest library of gaming and just about every genre as well.
2009:
Alan Wake
APB
Forza Motorsport 3
Halo 3: Recon
Halo Wars
Huxley
Project Offset
Splinter Cell: ConViction
Star Ocean 4
The Crossing
Theseis
Velvet Assassin
Sorry.. but the 360's Line up hasn't even been SHOWN yet. These are games that were pushed back to '09 for the 360. We all know MS hides their titles till the year they come out. And Rare could pull some awesome stuff out.
God of War 3 and Killzone 2 better be the second coming of Jesus and sell millions of copies rofl.. because even though LBP is awesome, it couldn't sell.. same with Resistance 2... but that game isn't too great to me anyways.
sinai @ Nov 20th 2008 2:15PM

WRE @ Nov 20th 2008 2:34PM

Dante G @ Nov 20th 2008 2:27PM
If only the hardware had better quality...
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Nov 20th 2008 6:14PM
Low quality hardware seems to be correlating with high sales. Remember that fragile error-prone PS2?
Dante G @ Nov 20th 2008 6:25PM
Yes I do. I bought mine back in 2002 and it still works. I think they fixed its problems for good back then, before I bought mine.
Alien Lord @ Nov 21st 2008 1:40AM
I've got three, a launch machine (I put her out to pasture to she can't RROD after 2 straight years of use), then I got an Elite, a while later I got an arcade and swapped my old HDD on to it. All three still work with no RROD. If this is blind luck then why the hell doesn't this luck apply to the rest of my life?!?
acefondu @ Nov 20th 2008 2:28PM
And remember kids, 33% of that 7 million will receive the dreaded RRoD. That's roughly 2,310,000 units in the scrap-heap. Thanks Microsoft!
Hyams @ Nov 20th 2008 2:31PM
RROD is pretty much dead now. It's as invalid an argument as "PS3 has no games".
hplcman @ Nov 20th 2008 2:34PM
What does 'pretty much dead now' mean in reference to the RROD? That it never occurs anymore? Or that occurs less? By how much? So now only 20% of 360's sold experience this problem? 10%? 5%?
Just curious....
Hyams @ Nov 20th 2008 2:35PM
The 360's being sold now days are *very* unlikely to RROD.
acefondu @ Nov 20th 2008 2:39PM
Actually RRoD is still just as alive today as it was when the 360 came out. They introduced a new chip about a month ago that is supposed to fix the problem, we shall see. However, the chip they released before that one was just as failed as the very first one. Ultimately they needed to fix the housing of the system so it doesn't overheat itself. I am very unimpressed by what they have done with the system. It's just like the PS2 having a crappy laser. Those broke down plenty too, people just didn't moan about it as much.
Mr Khan @ Nov 20th 2008 2:42PM
Depends on WHEN that 7 million was sold. Anything sold through the first half of 2007 probably is a ticking time bomb, but certainly that can only be about half of these
WRE @ Nov 20th 2008 2:43PM
I've owned 3 360s and not one of them ever had anything close to RROD, so anecdotal evidence FTW!
acefondu @ Nov 20th 2008 2:46PM
My anecdotal would be 4 out of the 5 friends I know who own a 360 saw the dreaded RRoD. One of which broke his Gears of War game in the process, somehow scratching it to hell. Don't ask me how that happened, it's just what I heard.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 20th 2008 2:48PM
I'm on number 6 but this one has officially made it past the 1 year mark. Man thinking about it reminds me of when my last one broke a little over a week before Mass Effect came out last year. I was not happy to put it nicely.
deaftly @ Nov 20th 2008 3:42PM
Ive had 23 out of my 30 360's RROD on me.....my cats somehow also opened every game case and destroyed the disc's soon after..... then my house set on fire.... now i am homeless....this is all from what my girlfriend told me. THANKS ALOT MICROSOFT YOU JERKS.
SlimPickinz96 @ Nov 20th 2008 3:51PM
Im with WRE on this one...
Im on my 2nd, 1rst one was given away as a hand me down gift.
Both ticking still. It might be that they get plenty of breathing room, I dont know... ie. if its in an entertainment center with a cardboard backing, cut the 360 sections back out. If not, inconvenience yourself and find a open space for it, so it doesn't cook itself.
FaceBook group: "I'd Rather Buy another 360, two Nintendo Wii's and a Snickers Bar, than PS3" (in regards to RROD) Yeh its like that.
